Are you doing it yourselves? What are you using?

We stripped our marble mantels too (two of which are identical to this)... used a heat gun and putty knife for the thick upper layers (quick and relatively neat), and citristrip paint stripper and a nylon spatula for the bottom few layers (messy, but doesn't hurt the stone.) Its tedious but rewarding work.

Using a nylon spatula is a great tip. The plastic scrapers that we've used have been to rough/sharp with exposed wood at times. The spatula seems like a better solution.

Thanks for the inpt, folks. Our contractor is doing the work but we'll ask him what technique/tools he's using...

I just started stripping a fireplace in my mom's living room. The house was built in 1901. After removing 8 layers of paint, I've reached the stone...a reddish-brown stone.

Would anyone know what type of stone it is and which product is best to use to polish it? I'm using ZipStrip and I don't want to damage the stone.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!!

Can't say what type of stone it is without seeing a pic, but Zip Strip is fine for stripping it. Just rinse well. As for "polishing," that would require abrasives... better to leave it as is. (Unless its extremely abraded already?)
