Front Doors Painted Black

The doors that were on the house when we bought it were in such bad cosmetic shape that the only inexpensive way to pull them together was to paint them black--as probably two-thirds of the doors on our block are painted. At some point we'd love to buy original rounded-top doors that are natural wood, but in the meantime, this is a decent compromise in our opinion.

They were probably originally painted anyway, so it's certainly not an affront to the period.

I agree, and sometimes people refinish doors that look like they were not made from the nicest wood to begin with and were meant to be painted - end up looking like bad do it yourself refinished front doors.

Very handsome, IMO. Seems like perfectly appropriate treatment to me.

If you want, you could always faux-finish a wood grain on them... although they were probably originally black. New doors like this would be very expensive.

Yeh, I agree, painted doors are authentic and look good. The black you've chosen is pretty classy. Of course mahoghany or walnut doors are usually worth stripping but chestnut and oak -- IMO -- are much less handsome "bare" than painted.

We spent a lot of hours rubbing and stripping our front doors only to find they weren't so great underneath and had some patches with different wood. We ended up repainting them. They look better than they did since we got many many layers of paint off.

like the black, very "London-y"

Looks great but what about security? Wouldn't it be easy for someone to break the glass, reach in and turn the knob form the inside? Is breaking into homes in C Hill and North Slope an issue nowadays (or could be if nabes slip back)? I just bought a North Slope house that has iron gates everywhere like a prison. Would like to take them down but need to get a better feel.
