Wallpaper Detail, Feeling Guilty

old wallpaper
lincrusta

Here's a detail of the existing wallpaper in the front hall. It's in pretty bad shape and several portions are destroyed, but we still feel a little regretful about removing it, especially because there is lincrusta under much of it. In fact, not restoring the lincrusta is arguably the biggest crime against preservation that we're committing in the whole renovation. We are preserving a well-preserved section of the lincrusta in the staircase from the basement to the parlor floor.

i know you probably aren't into the shabby appearance of things but i've seen wallpaper left as is and it really creates an interesting wall and a conversation piece. i am not sure how bad it is there but you could seal it somehow and let it stand on it own- i've seen it work in ecelctic old houses that have already lost some of the obvious details to provide the character and so anything left was held onto- how old is the wall paper?

Hard to say. That's why we decided to keep the piece of it in the stairwell--as an archaeological record of the house, but short of spending tons of money to restore the lincrusta, it's just not realistic to keep it in the Parlor hallway :(

Of course, it's all a personal choice. I prefer the old wallpaper. I've seen some great things done with just leaving it up. Or you can rip off the old wallpaper and paint over the glue that remains on the wall. Gives the wall a mottled plaster look.

It would be great to save a section of each and frame
them!

actually, thats not a bad little idea. keeping a little section of each and framing it in a small frame (maybe one of those 12"X12" record frames), and hanging it in the hallway. just my 2 cents though.

What is lincrusta? Is it the thin "paper board" like material that was used to create walls for closets and sometimes walls for hallways? Do you know what this material is called if it is not lincrusta?
