Shelving To Accommodate A/C Boxes

shelves

To hide ugly interior A/C units, we're boxing out spaces in the wall to recess them, and will then cover with salvaged grills. In the music room, we are building a long shelf that incorporates the A/C box (furthest section to the right).

new here. when you say "we", do you mean you are building this yourself? good for you.

Not really. It's more of a "royal we" that includes our GC and his subs!

how do you vent those...are you placing them there to avoid acs sticking out your windows? is it a landmark issue? we haven't given it much thought as we prepare to renovate...perhaps we should.

They're part of a big Mitsubishi system that requires condensors on the roof, Landmarks approval, the whole shebang.

Brownstoner - it's too late for you, but I don't see the benefit of this system versus a multi-zone split system with ducts from an air handler on each floor. Seems like you are taking up more cieling space with this system that the ducts would of, which can usually fit in the crawl space between the cieling and the subfloor above.

to mtegue:: For anyone planning a big renovation, it's worth exploring central a/c.

We can't argue with that. It's one of the bigger disappointments so far, though it may end up being fine in the end.

I'm sure it will keep you nice and cool, also I guess "balancing" will be a non-issue too, they spent a lot of time futzing with that at my place.
