Decisions, Decisions: What Color Grout?

floor tiles

The 1"x1" hexagonal floor tiles have been laid but not grouted. We're partial to a darker grout that will accentuate the lines between the tiles (similar to as they appear now) while Mrs. B is leaning towards a white grout. What do others think? We need to decide by the end of the week. We're facing the same issue with the wall tiles too.

Comments

Whoever will be in charge of washing the floors gets to choose.

we went with the grey- for us it looked a little more worn and less "brand new" plus that white won't stay white for long regardless of keeping up with the cleaning

We used white grout on a bathroom floor once. Never again. It always looked dirty, no matter how often we cleaned it. This time we used a dark gray grout, "Platinum", and the floor is always presentable.

At restaurants like Schiller's Liquor bar and Pastis they've used subway tiles with a near black grout to make the spaces look like they've been there forever-take a field trip to see if you like it.

We put in the same tile in our basement bathroom: subway on the walls (white grout) and hexagonal on the floor ("platinum" too) and I've been very pleased with the result. Because of the very dark wall paper we put in above the subway tiles, perhaps we should have done the dark grey grout on the walls to tie it in.

DO NOT USE THE WHITE GROUT. I just made this mistake. Put 'silver cloud' grout on the floor tiles and white grout on the walls. Floors look great. Walls, no. White grout looks great with our subway tile upstairs, but the hexagonals (we're using penny rounds) are too small for the white grout, I think.
The grey/silver looks good, and white will get unevenly dirty over time.
In fact, I need to re-do the walls, now that I see the grout looks horrible. Does that mean I need to completely re-tile the walls? Does that mean I need to re-sheetrock too?

Don't use white. Don't use any funky colors, Black grout will highlight the geometry of the tile's grid. If you use black make sure you are careful not to get it anywhere you don't want it. Wear Gloves and use cheesecloth to clean up instead of a sponge. You can control the water and prevent over saturating the sanded grout. Take several sheets of tile and glue them to a scrape of sheetrock then grout them with your choices. That way you can see what colors work for you and what the finished color looks like when it dries and has been sealed. I say with historic reno's best to error on the conservative side. People have this urge to go nuts when tiling and want to throw everything at it like some funky mosaic. You want to show off your bathtub and fixtures. Let the tile be a tranquil backdrop.
