This 1885 Park Slope brownstone is an eye-catcher, full of elegant original details, including seven mantels, loads of carved mahogany and a lovely stained glass atrium at the top of the staircase. It stands amid many of the Slope’s most impressive manses, at 56 8th Avenue between Union Street and Berkeley Place in the Park Slope Historic District.

It’s a single family, and big for one of those, sprawling over five stories, plus a cellar. The setup is traditional, with the kitchen and dining room on the garden level, and double parlors and an office above.

The dining room has plenty of that detail we mentioned: a carved, mirrored mantel, wainscoting, crown moldings, pocket doors, parquet floors.

There’s more of the same on the parlor floor, which has extra-high ceilings and a library (the “den” on the floor plan) in the rear with a sliding bookcase and a plethora of decorative woodwork, where Sherlock Holmes would look right at home lounging in his dressing gown and puffing his pipe.

He could also make use of an office in an extension off the library, though it is not pictured.

The third floor holds a master suite with bay windows, another giant mirrored mantel, pass-through closets and a sitting room, which could also function as another bedroom. There are four more bedrooms on the floors above (if you count a tiny one), and a large storage space on the low-ceilinged top floor.

The kitchen and baths are elegantly renovated; the former’s got a Viking range, a Franke farmhouse sink, a quartz-topped center island and a “wine bar” with a wine fridge. There’s a laundry room in a two-story rear extension, under the afore-mentioned office.

The listing, from Corcoran brokers Jessica Buchman and Tim Rettaliata, calls the house “meticulously maintained,” and nothing we can see contradicts that.

The asking price for all this space and splendor is $5.5 million. Seem on target?
