Here’s a big one — a circa-1854 Carroll Gardens brownstone that measures a whopping 34 feet wide, offering almost 6,000 square feet. At 16 2nd Place, it’s one of five such houses that stand in a row on the block, between Henry and Hicks streets.

Some detail remains within: crown moldings, plaster medallions, a grand curved staircase with a round, detail-adorned skylight at the peak. A good deal of what once must have been there is lost, though, including on the facade, which lost its cornice at some point.

There’s painted paneling, wall-to-wall carpeting and ceilings of acoustic tile — which is to say, there’s some cosmetic work to be done here. And there may be quite a bit of other work besides. Overall condition is hard to gauge — there’s much that isn’t pictured, including any kitchens or baths.

The workload may include refiguring. Once a grand one-family, the house now has three or four apartments, depending on how you count them. It’s currently set up as a pair of floor-through apartments over a duplex with two kitchens — one for summer — according to the broker.

The house could theoretically be configured in any number of ways or returned to one-family use, for the family in need of a palace-sized spread.

This is one of the front-garden blocks that gave the ‘hood its name, and the house has a nice one, with a bluestone walkway, a couple of planting beds, a pair of trees (including one towering one) and a wrought-iron fence.

In the same family for over 75 years, according to the brokers, the house hit the market in 2015, asking $5.5 million. We featured it as an Open House Pick in July of that year.

Now listed by Cheryl Nielsen-Saaf and Cara Sadownick of Corcoran, it’s asking $5.1 million. A considerable sum, to be sure — though as the listing points out, that’s around $850 a square foot, which is lower than average for these parts. Of course there’s a renovation budget to consider.
