This two-family brownstone needs work, but it’s got a fair amount of original detail — including crown moldings, parquet floors, slate mantels and loads of plaster decoration — and could be shined up into something nice. It’s at 591 Putnam Avenue, in Stuyvesant Heights.

It was a House of the Day back in 2006, and sold for $540,000 the following year. It looks like the buyers have been renovating it, and now are selling mid-project. (The listing references the house being owned by the same family for nearly 50 years — perhaps they were the sellers in 2007.)

It’s in a decidedly in-between state — window frames half stripped, half-done paint jobs, etc. — and some of the work doesn’t look to have been painstakingly done. (Note the urethane splotches at the base of one of the pictured mantels, to take one example.)

The plumbing and electric have both been updated, according to the listing, from Schneur Pil at Bedford Brownstone.

The photo of the front reveals peeling paint on the facade — and, more notably, a boarded-up house next door. (Which was in that same state back in 2006, according to House of the Day commenters.)

There’s no floor plan, but the house is set up as a garden rental and an owner’s triplex, which includes the slope-ceilinged finished attic space pictured.

It’s priced at $1.595 million, which may be ambitious for a place in this condition. But there’s potential there. What do you think of the place?
