Adding to this year’s flurry of affordable housing lotteries, yet another has just opened, this time bringing 97 newly constructed units to the market at 33 Eagle Street in Greenpoint.

The second affordable tower at the neighborhood-changing Greenpoint Landing mega-development is now taking applications for nearly 100 subsidized apartments available for households of one to four people making $18,275 to $112,190 annually. The available units include 24 studios, renting from $494 to $1,463, 24 one-bedrooms, renting from $532 to $1,840 and 49 two-bedrooms, renting from $647 to $2,216.

Created through the New York City Housing Development Corporation’s LAMP/Mixed Income Programs, 33 Eagle Street stands seven stories above Eagle and West Streets, is a smoke-free building and will include such amenities as an on-site superintendent, laundry room, bicycle room, fitness center and landscaped community courtyard.

Selection preference will be given to applicants who are current residents of Brooklyn Community Board 1, for whom 50 percent of units will be reserved. Municipal employees and the mobility-disabled will each receive 5 percent of units and the vision- or hearing-disabled will have 2 percent of units set aside for them.

The building, located on the site of a former sludge tank, is one of three entirely affordable buildings at Park Tower’s Greenpoint Landing development. The first of the buildings to open for lottery, 21 Commercial Street, is currently in the process of selecting tenants, having closed its application period last month.

The development is being co-developed by Park Tower Group and L+M Development. L+M development also worked on the townhouses at Navy Green.

Once completed, the Greenpoint Landing complex will contain a whopping 5,500 units, 1,400 of which will be affordable. In addition to 33 Eagle Street and 21 Commercial Street, a third affordable building is being developed at 5 Blue Slip.

Competition will undoubtedly be high for the new units, with thousands of applicants likely. Indeed, Downtown Brooklyn’s City Point development recently received nearly 90,000 applications for its 200 affordable units at 7 DeKalb Avenue, the Brooklyn Eagle reported.

The deadline to apply for 33 Eagle Street is May 16. To submit an application, visit NYC Housing Connect’s website, and be sure to read up on common mistakes and strategies for applying.
