Kalpana Chawla was an Indian-born woman who became the first Indian American astronaut and the first Indian woman in space. Unfortunately she was among the seven crew members who perished on the Space Shuttle Columbia in 2003. To honor her memory, New York City named the stretch of 74th Street between Roosevelt and 37th avenues after her in 2004. Known now as Kalpana Chawla Way, the street is a panoply of sari shops, Indian restaurants and cell phone stores. Lots of photos on the jump. GMAP
