Fantastic article, the best part is that MM attended a lecture given by Frederick Douglass. Both extraordinary men before their time!

you should get the landlord to put bars on the garden windows! there are guards which open in, so that if there is an fire you can still exit the premises. as for being liable for robbery, he would be liable since he didn't put the bars up, not because he didn't! he just wants to save $2,500 the approximate cost of installation!

wow. that house is going to take at least 450K to renovate, if not more. it is a SHELL! congratulations to the successful bidder.

web dubois said that race was the biggest problem in the 20th century and it appears to be the biggest problem in the 21st century. will american ever get past its past? comments on this blog seem to show that we will not.

sounds like a squirrel to me and exterminators aren't allowed to kill them, unless of course, you find the right one! we had a problem, the exterminator came, killed it and it let off an malodorous smell for about a week. they came back and sprayed and i gave our tenant a reduced rental amount that month.
we do live in nyc, and unfortunately there are creatures, better a squirrel or mouse than a burgular!

i am glad that it has taken a while. why rush a construction job, it always ends up pretty awful and hopefully, this place will be nice and fit within the context of the neighborhood. one of the owners has BEYOND EXTRAORDINARY taste, so...i am hoping for the best!

Very interesting how they permitted all of those awful developments on Washington Avenue, Myrtle Avenue, Vanderbilt Avenue, among other streets go through, yet when it comes to a few senior citizens, people who we should respect and admire, they won't permit the rezoning. Very strange indeed as I would much prefer them than a bunch of overpriced apartments which no one now wants.

we had the same problem and called roto rooter (sp) who came and flushed it. that was two years ago, and this summer we had to have the entire main replaced as it was 140 years old because there was leakage-gross.

my mortgage is $2,500 a month, i have a tenant who pays $1.500 and i live in a 1873 RENOVATED brownstone in clinton hill on three floors each over 950sf? what makes more sense? renting in a building where exterminators come around spraying each month or owning and deducting my mortgage, hmmm....

i think that it is fantastic, now let's send the drug dealers on the corner of grand and putnam to the front of her building and have them hang out and transact their business there! then perhaps she will do something about them and their ILLEGAL business.

Posted by: witchdoctor at June 11, 2009 5:57 PM in response to Development Watch: 324 Grand Avenue
the problem at that intersection is that there is a stop sign on waverly but there isn't one on willoughby. there needs to be stop signs on both corners and in addition, cross walks. as for grand avenue, the bumps do not work because they are not large enough and there needs to be more than just one.
maybe the local councilperson could do something about it, since she refuses to do anything about the drug dealers.
Posted by: witchdoctor at June 4, 2009 11:59 AM in response to Car Crash at Waverly and Willoughby
what they are afraid of is that the drug dealers who pay them regularly will have to move on and they will be out of money. half of those stores are fronts for dealers and their customers. get out!

today coming out of choice, i opening the door for a white woman and her baby in a stroller, she didn't even say thank you....wonder why people complain about the change in the neighborhood. remember all most people want is a little respect and this rude woman couldn't even say thank you....
Posted by: witchdoctor at May 5, 2009 12:01 PM in response to Rosie and Nelson Redux
i understood exactly what she was saying and while it may not have been in the language that many of the readers of the blog could understand, what she was/is saying is that she is beginning to feel like the outsider in her own neighborhood. i happen to see her often still getting her hair done at the dominican beauty salon. i, personally, walk down the street, as an african american woman, and people expect me to move, i sit on my stoop and people look at me as if i am not supposed to be here. sometimes, it is not as friendly as it seems. my husband walks down the street and many white women and men will cross the street-he hardly looks like a so called "hoodlum". so, i believe that we have to listen to the concerns of all residents and while no one is pinning for the "good old days" we are pinning for a little respect.

Take a look who has commented SEVERAL times already on this thread. The same old people over and over and really it always boils down to the same thing, which neighborhood is better, race, crime. After a while, it gets boring. Do any of these people have day jobs?
My suggestion is have topics which don't always ask the same questions, think of new ones. Talk about architecture in Italy and how it was transported here, anything and maybe the same olds will move on to another site. The NYTs blog won't permit certain conversations and actually, I like that and find it and the comments to be more mature.

If the owner is an agent, doesn't that have to be disclosed? The house is way overpriced for the neighborhood, any neighborhood now. Look at those stairs to even get upstairs. I am tired already. But it does look pretty nice if the photos are accurate.

The rendering alone says it all. Get rid of the African American's who frequent the Mall now and replace them with the people that we want there. Quite sad, indeed. Shouldn't we have a diverse population on the Mall which reflects the diversity of the Borough?

What is wrong with stringer and 11217 tonight? Why the hate filled posts? There was a young man killed in Prospect Park this past weekend, does that mean that 11217 is leaving? What about Williamsburg and all of those people who don't wash their hair, and all of the Hasidim and Latinos that live there? Does he find them problematic or a joy to have in the neighborhood, enriching its history?
The beauty of New York is diversity. You can chose to live where ever you want. Live on the UES or the UWS, live in Cobble Hill or Fort Greene, Greenpoint or Bay Ridge, but stop critizing other neighborhoods if you really don't know that much about them.
The market will determine the price, not outsiders filled with bad opinions and heresay.

No, the neighborhood has a sense of self importance, the residents and the owners of the store fronts. Maybe they will understand that vacant store, like vacant houses in "bad neighborhoods" leads to the demise of a neighborhood not the invigoration.

Do not move into this apartment. You are supposed to have windows with bars that able to unlocked from the inside for you to exit for fire. If you put bars on your landlords windows you are foolish.
Posted by: cillmylandlord_again at November 17, 2009 1:38 PM in response to First Floor Apartment Security?
Do you really see the others have bars on windows? what kind of block do you live on. I have sliding glass doors in rear...obviously no bars...as do others....
How about on fireescapes of bldgs behind you? Do they all have bars?
I would just get lock, or something so window could not be lifted unless in some area with lot of breakins (ask your precinct).

I would say definitely get them. Years ago (in the 80's and early 90's) we would get broken into through our yard as often as through our roof. It's been 20 years since anyone tried to break in through our garden door, but alas just last week, a neighbor caught someone trying to break into another neighbor's door in their backyard, so I do now recommend them.
Landlords are not however, responsible for them. You need fdny approved security gates. Vinny's ironworks does goregous ones and installs them for $500 (that was for 2 windows), but you can get regular accordian looking ones for around $100 at loews or home depot.

I couldn't find what I bought on Lowe's website, but I did find it on True Value's website: http://tinyurl.com/yhnwm85
That is the one I bought. It was super easy to install. I've had some nimrod try to break into my apartment several times through the rear window. Since I've put that up, I've had no problems. I highly recommend this product.

The LL may say that to save a buck but you should get your own. Just make sure that they're fire Approved - NO LOCKS WITH KEYS.
