Free Salvaged B'stone Doors

We have six brownstone interior doors we'd like to give away, all removed from our prospect heights brownstone and either original or fairly early replacements. I will post or send pictures if anyone is interested. They are in decent condition, but were evidently painted numerous times and then stored in our basement for a year. With your TLC, they will be awesome! (Please no requests for hardware only.)

1) Pair of original parlor entry hinged double doors. Arched, 96.5" at center x 28" x 2" deep. Some original/antique hardware, including those crystal (?) door knobs you see around Bklyn. Would like to give these away as a pair.

2) Two 4-panel doors, 90x30x1.5". Don't know whether these are original, but they are heavy hardwood construction and very solid. Some original/antique hardware, including crystal (?) knobs. Take singly or as a pair.

3) 2 french doors, 90" x 30" with 18 glass panels running the full length of the door. One door has two broken glass panels. These doors have no original hardware. Take singly or as a pair.

Email prospect.pl.brownstone@gmail.com if interested.

Source for Plants in Bulk?

hi brownstoners - i am wondering if anyone has a good source in NYC, LI or NJ (other than HD or Lowe's) for inexpensive plants in bulk. we are looking for your standard brooklyn backyard shade plants and flowers. we're not looking for super-high quality or variety - just something we can use to pretty up our disaster area of a backyard until we have a real budget. thanks!

we were given an estimate of $50K for something about the same size including new foundation, no fancy materials or wall of windows or anything.

to clarify, these are all INTERIOR doors. the parlor doors are doors that were the entry from an interior hallway into the parlor - they are not external entry doors. sorry for any confusion...brain not working so well today.

amt230 - i don't spend a lot of time on that block so wouldn't know about the mercedes. i wasn't being sarcastic, though. i'm pretty sure i saw a post here a while back speaking positively about the modern renovation.

all i'm saying is that the block doesn't seem that much different from lots of ft. greene blocks (or clinton hill or boerum hill or - gasp - park slope for that matter) where you have decent, well-looked after homes right up against their more downtrodden and disrespected cousins. i'm guessing nowhere in brooklyn is truly immune from this, and if a buyer is trying to control what his or her neighbors do in/to/in front of their homes, there are probably some homeowner's associations in florida that buyer should look into instead of brooklyn.

wow, the large iced coffee at lil miss muffin's on park near the b/q is $3 too. i almost couldn't believe it, but i guess she's in line with ozzie's and sbux. bergen bagels has pretty good iced coffee for about a buck less!

i thought mr. b said he took the exterior photo, and i presume it was relatively recently that he did so. i don't see any trash bags or boarded up windows. frankly, the block looks like a lot of ft. greene blocks to me, with a mix of houses that look well-kept and some that don't.

what is the problem with the two neighbors on the left? i thought we liked the modern place, at least. no?

this used to be FSBO. their ad, http://180adelphi.com/ is a little out of date but gives you a better idea than the broker's. looks like the broker just hasn't had time to get the listing up right.

thanks Joe and Brooklynista - both are useful suggestions. we loved what we found at gowanus nursery but are very much gardening neophytes and don't want to kill our budget and/or expensive plants. (as an aside, i don't want to ask for too much, but i would love any recommendations for perennials that like the shade and don't look too much like they're just there to take up space.)

sorry, but pushing and stressing is just what happens to people in positions of power. if they can't handle it, they shouldn't be in positions of power. particularly ones involving children.

it doesn't make sense to say keaton's a casualty of these "wars" but that his wound was self-inflicted. he did this to himself.

is what the teacher did supposed relevant to the issues with keaton? or is it relevant because it suggests that the school has more problems than other public schools? or is it relevant because teacher's unions are terrible so we all have good reasons not to send our kids to any public school?

in any event, i doubt anyone thought that the principal was the ONLY problem at the school or that the school would be perfect if he were gone. certainly, the vibe between/among the parent groups seems toxic - that alone might be a reason not to consider it. there are a number of public schools in "brownstone brooklyn" with the same kind of ethnic/racial makeup of students (and probably similar class divides) and not all of them are this rancorous. ps 11 is the obvious parallel. it's nice to send your kid to your zoned school, for a lot of reasons, but why would you expect a parent to deal with that kind of stuff if they have other options?

csa - i don't think anyone who actually read the story assumed that this guy, segarra, is pure as the driven snow or even blameless in the situation (or the teacher he was representing). but it doesn't matter. if segarra's record, whatever is it, doesn't excuse keaton, why should it change the "dynamic" of the conversation about keaton? and defense of keaton using this approach is actually scary to me - you want your kids taught that it's okay to beat on someone because, what, you think he's a bad person? what, exactly, do you think should happen here? because you've thrown a fair amount of mud, but you haven't said what you think is the right result.

CSA, if this represents some kind of tribal "victory" for the other guy, i guess you lost? are you the victim here? you've somehow lost out because an out-of-control and possibly unstable individual has been removed as the head of your kid's school? incredible.
