Just wondering...best use of parlor
so, many traditional brownstones have double doors that open directly into the front part of the parlor, right? The set up I most often see are couches or chairs flanking the fireplace, usually somewhat positioned in front of the doors. My question is...how do folks usually use that portion of the floor most close to the parlor windows? Do you have it set up as another little sitting area? Is your desk there? Just trying to use the space as best as possible and getting puzzled.

Classic brownstone interior paint color?
Awhile back, either on this site or apartmenttherapy.com, there was a discussion about a classic brownstone interior paint color - essentially, what brownstone interiors were painted 100 years ago. It is a very warm color, bordering on a rich, yet light yellow. Anyone recall the name - I believe it's a Benjamin Moore.

that is so cool.

I heard the cheers and yells through my bedroom window late last night (at least, late for me). For a short while, it was as if all of Brooklyn was united. Really nice feeling.

Let's just agree we are seeing this differently. These people will not be leaving this neighborhood. There will continue to be a demand for housing in this area as everyone in this specific community wants to be within walking distance of the synagogue and their community center. When $10 million was paid a year ago for one of these houses, comps had absolutely nothing to do with it. Supply and demand in the outside world has no bearing on Gravesend and certain parts of Midwood Brooklyn.

but, what do comps matter if they're paying 100% cash for the house? or the purchaser's parents are buying the house for them? or they are going to another family member for a loan??

DOW - I mean these people are their own bankers, they do their own financing and deals among themselves. They don't go to Chase Bank and ask for a loan. In that way, they are much more insulated from the economic downturn. I didn't say they were completely unaffected, just that they aren't reliant on the "goodwill" of outsiders. Beleive me, their wealth will weather them through this storm.

ummm, why am I being compared to PropJoe? Nothing I said was flame-worthy, racist or otherwise inflammatory. Syrian Jews are a very insular group and have built up a great deal of wealth not dependent on banking, the stock market etc. etc. so, it makes sense that they can still afford to buy property, tear down homes and builder larger ones in their place.
Dave - why don't you stop talking out your ass for a change?
Posted by: tiptoe at October 21, 2008 12:43 PM in response to Last Week's Biggest Sales
But what were the asking prices? Not surprising re Gravesend, the Syrian Jews have not been greatly affected by the market downfall and other world events.

I'm not a fan of fretwork, but the details in this house are pretty breath-taking. Agree that the cabinetry in the kitchen seems off but everything else? Tres magnifique.

Biff - you sound like a nice guy. But there's a bunch of you out there that just like to hear yourselves speak. I have a hunch that many readers find that boring.

Too bad the What won't be attending. I won't be present at the asshat convention; I've supported/read Brownstoner since 2005 and attended Brownstoner events in the past, but this meeting just doesn't hold interest.

At the time this information was first announced, the Director of Communications at Methodist Hospital issued a statement indicating that the lease with Berkeley Carroll originally expired in 2003, but that at least 4 one-year extensions were requested and granted. This time around, Methodist said they needed the space and Berkeley Carroll did NOT ask for an extension.

Dave in Bed Stuy - I didn't think the rich, white comment was racist at all. If the shoe fits...or maybe it rings a little too close for you?? Not that I'm voting for Socialism or anything.

there was an article in this week's New York magazine on this exact topic. Renegotiating may be something as un-connected as asking the seller to pay for past due assessments for new windows. In the article, the assessment was 20,000 and the seller agreed to apy it. previously, no way. Now, sellers are looking to keep the deal going. Good Luck.

This story pretty much disgusts me. These people are supposed to be so pious and devout and have no outside interests other than religion and their family, and yet they have let greed and the desire to win get in the way of anything else. Oh, and BTW, the house isn't even that great.

Been here a bunch of times. Good for brunch, sub-par for dinner. Something doesn't translate from the tasty, fairly-priced brunch time menu to the underwhelming dinner menu.
why do you want to stop paying rent? just to get away with something? unless the place is uninhabitable, why would you want to risk being kicked out or being taken to court? think a little.

We had an excellent meal at Ici. The food was carefully prepared and so flavorful. French, but inspired from Asia and elsewhere. Waitstaff courteous. And the back garden cannot be beat in good weather.

I would be thrilled if Ricky's opened a real store at this location. Why doesn't he expand into Brooklyn? I mean, Ricky lives in BK, we have a need for this kind of store, it's a win-win situation!

All you pro-Buffalonians would have to find a job if you moved there, right? There are limited jobs up there even though the housing stock is abundant. Therein is one problem. Artists obviously would not have this worry since they can create pretty much anywhere, right? And they really only have 2 seasons: Winter and Summer. There is no Fall or Summer to speak of. If you don't mind being a shut-in for about 3-4 months of the year, or getting stranded for 8 hours in a freak snowstorm that the forecasters failed to see (dumping 24" of snow in 3 hours), then Buffalo's your kind of town. Plus, if you're single, the people are not all that attractive.

this is disgusting and highly unsanitary. when I used to live in midtown Manhattan, there was an obviously mentally unstable woman who used to crouch down and do her business on the corner right at the beginning of the crosswalk at 2nd Avenue and 54th Street. No toilet paper though, just picked up her pants and left.

I've been in the West Village store too. I have to say that the prices were higher than in your everyday chain drugstore and the amount of stuff they carried was pretty spare. just 'cause it's Park Slope doesn't mean people want to pay more for fancy shampoo and bandaids for kids. maybe the pharmacy will be opened 24 hours though.

we're not starting a subway war, I'm simply pointing out that tybur6 wrote a misstatement. You may like ditmas park more than the north slope, but it shouldn't be because of the subway, since North Slope is serviced by more subways than DP.

tybur6: the North Slope IS serviced by the Q/B AND the 2/3. That one of it's major advantages over Ditmas Park. 4 subways and a short walk to the Atlantic center to at least another 4.

The scary thing about bedbugs is that no one is immune. Our offices in a large building in Manhattan were evacuated last week for fumigation of--you guessed it--bedbugs. People bring them in from their homes, the subways, and everywhere else. It was sort of a comical sight - a group of office workers running amok, trying to refrain from hysterics.

I like it, but lemme ask you a question...are you able to enjoy the hammock and the outdoor dining with the proliferation of mosquitos that seem to inhabit Park Slope backyards? Or is your backyard somehow immune? After being annihilated the first time I stepped out into ours, I've been trying to figure out a way to get rid of them without setting off a poison bomb.

Better there once, won't be back. Scratching my head as to how one pizza, one glass of wine and a salad can set you back $50. And the pizza wasn't that great. Seriously, I live so close I could be there every night, but it just isn't worth it IMO. Would rather make the trip into Manhattan for John's or Arturo's.
Ugh - Steve Jemal is the worst type of business man - a tax cheat and cutthroat. Worst combo.

I don't know, despite wanting to like this place very much, I found it too expensive for the portions served. It's too "cute" for my taste, the ambiance too casual for the sort of cuisine they are trying to serve. On the plus side, they are very kind to children.
I went twice, and I won't go again. Definitely $$$.

don't get my furniture cleaned quite as often, but I second the recommendation for Delmont. It's a small operation and one of the four owners will come do the job himself.
