I bought this the other week for $380 but it doesn't work well with my sink. I can't return it to the store because my (dumb) contractor installed it before I checked to see how it would look with the sink. Oh well, now I'm hoping to just get back some of what I just paid. This will have been used only a few times for about 1 week myself only. Loss of money for me, good deal for you! This will come in the original box

Frameless glass shower door? (Or just glass)

How to install glass shower door? Cost?

How does one install a glass shower door (on a tub)? Is it hard? How much does this cost? Does anyone know someone who will do just this for me (i.e. no other reno work)? I would also install just 1 piece of glass...

1 door sliding closet door?

Does anyone know where in the city I can find this kind of sliding door on rails? I can't seem to find who sells these. I just want 1 sliding door as my closet door and will be installing it on the wall, on the exterior of the closet.

About how much to renovate small BATH & KITCHEN???

I'm looking to re-do the following and have no idea how much this could cost. I don't need high-end, or even mid-range. I'm fine with Ikea or a step above Ikea, as long as the quality is "acceptable" and looks good enough:

BATHROOM (6'x8')
-new tile in shower & tile floor
-new sink, sink holder/drawers
-refinish tub, or replace if not too much $

KITCHEN (8'x8')
-new counters
-new cabinets
-new floor, tile or wood

Rough estimates, including labor and fixtures??? A estimated price range?

Again, I'm not talking high end, no new appliances.
THANKS!

Hey, what does anyone think...do have the Van Kempen's being on the show and in the 'hood HELP or HURT my property value? Or no affect whatsoever?

The reno's not THAT bad...I mean, not my taste at all, but not so terrible. And, hey, getting that all done in that time frame is a miracle. (Although, I'm sure if it wasn't being filmed, it wouldn't have been 9 weeks. There's no way it would ever have moved that fast in "real life". (REAL real life).

I live in blocks from BHFC and only ate there once..it was okay, but nothing great. Please do not open yet another underwhelming French bistro type place, we have enough of those around. Wait, a wings place? are you kidding? Nooooo! We don't need wings. Talk about decreasing my property value. And, yes, having a Trader Joe's 3 blocks away does increase my property value. Not $3mm, though.

I chose Kraftmaid over Ikea....looks better, better quality, not that much more. Every contractor I mentioned "Ikea" to rolled their eyes in disgust. If you're looking to invest, forget it.

after looking around a lot, I went with Grande Central Showroom at 19 Bond. I worked with this guy Art who was really nice and patient. If you work with Art, tell him this nice young girl doing bath/kitchen reno's in Bklyn sent you. (I'm in the middle of the reno now). I also went to A&F showroom, but didn't like it as much. You have to make appointments, you can't just walk in and browse...that doesn't work for me. Wherever you go, be sure to bargin down the prices. "List price" is totally BS.

Blueman Hardware on Bowery & Broome. They sell all sorts of this kind of hardware for doors, closets etc. They'll also tell you how to install, etc. Even let you borrow a floor sample to take home. Be sure to bargin them down if you're spending a lot.

of course I know Ikea has a website (sarcasm in return for the 12:32 post). a lot of people on here seem to have all the free time in the world to just post stupid things! All I was asking for was some advice, not lame comments like "one trillion dollars".

gee, thanks "One Trillion Dollars". Don't you have other blogs to post on? lame. And thanks, 12:32pm, I didn't realize Ikea had a website....Again, don't you have more important comments to post elsewhere?

Yes, I'd like to do some of the work myself, so I think I could do a bath for $6-10k, hopefully the kitchen for $10-15k. So, I guess $25k budget total...

Thanks for the great comments!

Sushi, welcome to the Brownstoner trolls - the lame and outright mean comments on here are a mystery to me, but it's best to just ignore them than engage.

Anyway, we gutted a half bath and turned into a 4 x 5 full bath for about 11K. We have another full bath (about 6 x 8) that would have probably been $20K min to gut and redo. But what you're talking about sounds more surgical, not a complete gut. You could probably create a budget just be looking online at fixtures/tile you like - and of course, it depends on how end you want to go. Tile starts cheap ($3/4 psf all the way up to $30+) and sinks vary hugely.

The architects and design building has tons of showrooms where you can get a sense of different options:

http://www.adbuilding.com/

I have lots of other links if you want them but won't clog up this post if you already know of places (i.e. tile and fixture sources).

Woops, forgot to add that the places that source fixtures/tile might be able to help with ballpark labor estimates - we were able to get a sense of installation costs when we were shopping for tile... Though of course, getting an estimate from a contractor is best way to go. Why not look up a recommended contractor and have them come take a look at your place to give a more specific estimate? It can be a relatively quick process and then you'll really have a better sense!

Prices vary based on square feet, location and finish. Consumer Reports used to have a kitchen renovation cost calculator on their website, which I can't seem to find anymore. This was for complete and total renovation, including appliances, labor--everything.

When I checked last summer for myself, in zip code 11215, for an 8x9 foot kitchen, the range was $30K for economy, $53K median and $95K for luxury.

If you want to see good displays, but may not be ready to purchase, I recommend Home Depot Expo on LI as well as Gracious Home on the UES.

Blackman has a nice showroom.

I ended up buying at Park Slope Plumbing Supply, which matched prices I found elsewhere.

I had an Ikea kitchen (<$1500 at the time) in my old condo. People were consistently shocked that it was Ikea because it looked much more expensive. That said - some of the Ikea cabinets are good quality, and some not so much. The melamine ones I think look cheap no matter what.

Try Smolka on the East Side. Simon's Hardware also has nice bathroom fixtures.

I've used both in my renovations and have been pleased.

I can't find the original article for free, but if you follow this link from ikeafans, it has the details of the Consumer Reports article from a few years ago that ranks Ikea well ahead of many other cabinet brands, including Kraftsmaid and the rest of the Home Depot brands. About 3 posts down or so...
