Free Clothesline Pole/Ladder

There were a couple of people asking about these a few weeks ago and I have one in my back garden that we don't want. Please email me if you are interested in taking it.

Handrail Twist and Turn Needed

The previous owner of my house, quite possibly the worst DIY-er EVER, sawed out the turn in the handrail at the top of the steps and replaced it with a couple of lovely 2 x 4s. Our renovation is coming along and the stair railing is the last outstanding issue.

I'm looking for some handrail parts, esp. a left hand "twist and turn". The few stair people I've spoken to - Soxco and NY Circular Stair - do not seem interested in the job.

My contractor is willing to work on the railing if I can find this part, or I can go to another stair person.

Anyone out there have parts for sale or another stair specialist to recommend? I would really appreciate it.

Diguising Mr. Slim - pics anyone?

Hi there. I have been keeping an eye on the A/C forum as I am just about to decide on a mini split system for a 2 floor renovation. I HATE the way these things look, but still feel like it's the way to go... If anyone has come up with ways of disguising these beasts I'd love to see. Brownstoner, in early August you mentioned posting some pics. I'd be grateful. thanks!

We're looking at the LG Art Cool series, though at 30" long and 5.5" deep it's still not invisible. In fact, it still looks huge and ugly) in my tiny townhouse... I'm currently trying to find a place in NYC where I can go to actually see the Art Cool units in person.

I have looked into the ceiling units too. The great thing about these is that they can duct about 30% of their capacity to other rooms. Unfortunately, they look quite industrial and at 24" (or 28" - can't remember at the moment) are quite large in a bedroom scenario.

As far as hiding them goes... The mini-split units need to be installed on the walls of the rooms they cool - no hiding them in a closet and ducting the air. That's part of the point of the mini-split system - no ducting (except for the ceiling cassettes and that's for only 30% of capacity).

I have always used, and recommended, Moving Your Way based in Park Slope. Reasonable rates, etc. Just be sure to ask to have mattresses/upholstery wrapped. I think some crews are more careful than others - can't beat the price!

Last year at the Atlantic Antic the Gowanus Canal Development Org. was talking about giving away rain barrels for free sometime this spring. I put my name on the list, but haven't heard anything.

I have asked a similiar question in the past and didn't really get a full answer. Some of the archive posts discuss grills for these units but no one has posted a pic or mentioned where one can be obtained. I have searched the internet myself to no avail. Let me know if you have better luck.

It seems that this is not a topic that interests Mr. Brownstoner. This topic has come up a lot in the last few weeks, Mr. B. offered to up load his pics, but never did. I guess the repeated inquiries on this subject, or people wanting to improve their homes, isn't as interesting to Mr. B. than trying to court advertisers. That’s a shame!

I think nobody offers suggestions for hiding the split systems because there aren't any. If you build something around it, it would obstruct the air. We're going to put a split system in the kitchen and basement, but no way we'll put it in bedrooms, dining room or living room. Too mugly fugly. I'd rather have window units any day. Ours cool the house fine and they look okay. I had a friend come over the other day and later on when the topic came up, she exclaimed she didn't even notice I had window units in our house. Plus I actually like the "white noise" window A/C's give off. Helps me concentrate on my work. As for central air, it's just not the kind of pricey investment we'd make in this house at this point. Maybe in a few years if/when values in the neighborhood increase. I would be nervous to invest a lot more money in a house than it's worth. Just because it was done during the bubble doesn't mean it's the norm. If high society chic coops on Central Park can have window units, then I figure it's okay if we out here in Brooklyn do too!

A lot of these companies are very very nice on the phone. They sound as though they're professional and courteous, and that you, as their customer, are in great hands. They're full of shit. When they send the scam artists, er, movers, to your house, they're done with you. Try calling in the middle of the move to ask a question and they'll get really aggressive. Go with an insured, reliable, well-established company; not one of these fly-by-night hack-jobs.

We used Flatrate, but I wouldn't recommend them. They were fast, cheap and relatively cheerful, but they were kinda rough with our things and didn't put boxes in the rooms we labeled them with. Left some scratches in the floor when they put down the bed, broken case of wineglasses (granted, I packed them, but I used the same method I've used for 3 or 4 other moves and never had a problem). So, no tip.

I'm not a particularly anal person about these things but it was the first time I actually used a commercial mover. I always just hired guys from street flyers and helped them with the move.

Try citimove.com. You describe your move and almost immediately get a number of bids from local movers, detailing how they plan to do it (time, size of truck, number of movers). Makes it easy to compare. Then you post a review on the site afterward, so there's some incentive not to destroy everything you own. Found Moore Moving this way. They were fast and cheap.

I cannot begin to tell you how bad OZ Moving Company is. I was moving less than 30 blocks on the same side of town. They sent four guys, two of which I never saw one did all the work and the others, who knows. They arrived 40 min. late but made me sign saying they were there at 9:00 am, they just had to park, made me give them quarters for the meter that they never used and finished at 5:00 pm. I was their first and only move and they took their sweet time. The actual cost was $600 higher than the estimate. I cant express to you enough, please don't go with this company unless of course you have money to throw away. Oh yes, one other thing, they destroyed my new hardwood floors in my new apt. Icing on the cake. I tell everyone I know, go with anyone BUT OZ. MOVERS BEWARE!!!
