Window Garden Predator?
My herb garden is on my fire escape in window boxes [3 of them] and something is digging up the plants and tossing them aside. My friend says mice or squirrles or [ick] rats. Any hints on keeping them away?

rent stablized lease renewal
so now that the increases have been announced, what determines if i sign a 1 or 2 year lease? 1 year is 3% and 2 is 6%
i pay below market and plan on staying indefinitely so i guess 2 is the best option?

herbs in brooklyn
Looking for large basil, oregano etc plants at reasonable prices, is the farmer's market my best bet or does somewhere have a good selection at competetive prices?

Brownstone management
So, what do my celebrity neighbours and others who aren't around to maintain [sweep, shovel etc] their brownstones do? i presume they hire management companies... if one were to leave the country a lot this year, should they consider it?

kitchen backsplash
hi,
i'm looking to do a cheap backsplash for my kitchen. I want to do it myself, some thoughts I had. Painting with a number of layers of glossy paint? Trying to do some tile myself [the little teeny kind that comes in sheet] or buying a couple really big sheets of formica and gluing it to the wall. You can also get really thin sheets of aluminum with adhesive on the back. i thought that would look cool... any thoughts?

Prospect park west stabbing
Anybody know what happened on prospect park west last night? Neighbours said a teenager got stabbed, but i havent' been able to find out. After the murder this spring, makes me nervous.

so it's a legal doctors office on the garden, and 2 family upstairs?
if it's legal that's an awesome layout...

the sign out front says Awaye realty so i'm sure they really have the listing...
[unless they snuck in and stuck the sign up and no one moved it for 3 months, ha ha]
the apartment abutts a 10+ story coop, i don't like it when townhouses are like that, dark yard and it messes up the scale of the house...

suprised you didn't mention what a hard time this building had selling... curbed used to gossip about it weekly...
http://curbed.com/tags/55-berry
many people bought apartments there that are worth less now... not sure how much this person paid though, too lazy to look it up...

... and no one has mentioned the awful awful floor plans? all wierd angles, ugly hvac units... i really was interested in the project, but didn't want to attempt to put furniture in there...
as for the finishes and stuff, never saw the finished project, though i'm sure it's average... i don't think people that bought in that building were very informed about the market...
there was so much better available for the same price or cheaper...

that building blocked my view of the statue of liberty, and is incredibly ugly, in a faux russian hasidic architect [not all of them just the un-talented ones] marble and vinyl windows sort of way...
one building condemmed and the one next door full of cracks and looking un-stable? they deserved to get sued big time...
[though i like that they have zip car in the basement :)

thanks, my landlord will definately be raising mine as much as he can... i think i'll do one year and take the risk... even if it goes up 4% the following year, it'd still save me $1000
my lease isn't due to be signed until april 2010, so i can feel it out till then...

the "flag ship" store on flatbush is a hoot, they were once [9 years ago] passing off wattery ketchup as salsa sauce for a day cause they ran out... i never went back, but always tell non-new yorkers about the mexican/chinese/sushi joints in brooklyn... This is a super fun place, with a wonderful vibe [ the designers also did heath's ledgers sorta restaurant] and a great 1st date place...
However the food has been really dreadful more than once when i went there, mussels full of sand, undercooked chickent etc...
other people have not had my experience, but aside from the donuts the food has been blah to me...
i still go sometimes though, it is fun, might take my parents...
... and i hate dark wood floors, unless you have dark wood furniture from west elm they look crappy.

express way, plus good back fence means lots of light and not too bad noise,
but i don't like that side of the expressway, i'd rather buy a smaller windsor terrace limestone or woodframe for 1.5 that only needs a little reno...

but it was already done...?

if i want to read about crime and feel sad for a victim, there are plenty of sites for that.
if i want to read about a fire and feel sad for an old house, than i want to read it here.

with the windows open it was ridiculous...
unless you're laying in the park and listneing, a plane should never bother you. close your bloody windows

my first apartment was off of newkirk avenue in ditmas park in a huge run down building. my bedroom was the maids q2uarters with my own bath... looking across a courtyard from my room, i could see my roomates bedroom. the place had living room, breakfast room, dining room and huge kitchen,
i paid 450, my roomate paid 500... and this was 2003..

nope. it's a mansion, you're going to say a kensington attached house in london isn't a mansion?
i like it, thought, huge and i like the layout, except i'd turn the dining room into a kick ass kitchen...
but that wood might be a dealbreaker, maybe not so bad in person...
plus i'd play doctor fetish games in the garden floor...
