Kitchen Cabinets & Radiators
We would like to build our kitchen cabinet frames over steam-heated cast-iron radiators. Will this risk warping the cabinets or inefficient convection (there are only grills on the front and side of the cabinet, not on the top of the countertop)? According to home depot, if we place a piece of metal sheeting behind the radiator, on the floor, and bend it gently out towards the room over the top of the radiator, this draws the air up and out into the room, thereby letting it circulate better, and also drawing it away from the cabinet. Does this sound correct?

Question on Medallions
We are doing an electrical upgrade in our Park Slope brownstone to include wiring to all the chandeliers. There are several original medallions between the chandeliers and the ceiling. Our electricians have informed us that, according to current code, the chandeliers have to be attached directly to newly-installed boxes in the ceiling, thus precluding the possibility of keeping these medallions since they create a separation of up to 6 inches between the chandelier and the box.
Does this make sense? Has anyone dealt with this before? Any creative solutions?

Excellent salvage items for sale
We are in the process of renovating our Park Slope brownstone, and have a number of architectural salvage items we'd like to sell, including pier mirrors, period lighting fixtures, marble sinks, arched pair of parlor doors, clawfoot bathtub, and other items (e.g., new GE refrigerator, lawn furniture, medicine cabinets). All are in excellent condition, but are a bit extravagant for our tastes. We would like to find a nice home for the pieces, preferably someone interested in buying the items as a package. If interested, please email prlegendre@hotmail.com for more photos and to arrange an appointment.

Preparing for an architect
We just bought a 4-story brownstone in North Slope that will require a fair amount of renovation. We close in December and would like to get an architect in right afterwards. We have a good sense ourselves for what we'd like done and are wondering what is the best way to pull together our ideas in a way that is helpful for an architect. Comments welcome.

Are your doors still available? I'd be interested in buying one of them with the interior frame. I don't need the hardware or exterior frame. What are you asking for them?

I have two steam radiators that we just took out of our 100 year old brownstone as part of a renovation. They are fairly tall and skinny (I don't have the measurements on me, but probably about 3 feet high x 2 feet wide). Let me know if you are interested and I'd be happy to send photos. you can reach me at 718 864 0799 or prlegendre@hotmail.com.

I've also used Rebuilder's Source out of the Bronx on two occasions. Both times they came to my house in Brooklyn within the week and took away a ton of stuff. 718-742-1111

I was just at New York Old Iron (Architectural salvage) which is right under the F train at the end of the Lowes parking lot (Roy Vaccaro).
I was there looking for fireplace inserts, but noted he had a huge selection/supply of steam radiators there in varying states.
You may want to check them out as he has a ton of different sizes, etc.

I have 5 steam radiators left from our 1895 Harlem Brownstone. Some have nice floral ornaments, and the thought of giving them to scrap metal is killing me. For $25 a pop, you can have them. (Or $100 for all of them). Contact me at mail@wolfgang-schulze.de and I can send you pictures and dimensions.

not a clear solution...can you move the radiator to a better location or are you trying to hide them?
Posted by: argentina at October 20, 2009 11:20 PM in response to Kitchen Cabinets & Radiators
You move the rad or re-design the kitchen.
Posted by: denton at October 21, 2009 6:47 AM in response to Kitchen Cabinets & Radiators
Radiator cover manufacturers claim better air mixing with the cover as it changes the air flow in the way you describe, but then they have a vested interest.
If you provide enough air space over and around the radiator and use a pad of say rigid insulation, there should be no problem with warping. I have this setup, but open on the sides and 8" gap at the top, without problem. Also kitchens don't need as much heat as other rooms.

Could you elaborate or provide an alternative solution?
