Heat Stays On, Thermostat Broke?
Just moved into a rental in Park Slope where we pay heat and hot water. Each unit has it's own boiler in the basement and we have baseboard heating throughout the apartment. Heat wasn't working when we moved in so I went to the basement and saw emergency switch was flipped. Turned it on and heat kick in, but never shut off, had to go back down and flip the switch again to keep it off. Thermostat turned to 55 didn't do anything. Any help? Landlord employs some friend of his to do most work in the building. But this guy doesn't inspire confidence. I'd rather pay a professional to come find the problem.

Good Cleaning Crew?
Hey-Anyone have a good cleaning crew they use for apartment cleanings? Apartment is empty, but we need to get it cleaned before we move in, just a lot of dusting, mopping, scrubbing. Thanks

LL is responsible for heat regardless of who pays for it, so if he's unresponsive, that's the issue, and you have a case. What IS his position? You don't need an electrician to fix a thermostat.
And I don't get 'deduct from rent' (the fix cost); if you're planning to do that, you can just as well deduct the electricity cost.

There are other things it can be besides a bad thermostat. The fact that someone turned the boiler off entirely because they couldn't fix it kind of suggests it's a bigger problem, like a piping or wiring screw up.

it sounds to me like someone attempted to rewire the limit switches and shorted out the thermostat wiring...for a free consultation, email me @ errol832000@yahoo.com

mp..lets see...boiler on switch turns on boiler...no control by thermostat...hmmm...landlords handyman tried to fix it and admits that "he is is no electrician"...answer: he bypassed the thermostat in the low voltage limit daisy chain...dont you get those moments where you know why the boiler does not work the minute you walk out the door?..by the way ,it was fun to run into you at pronto the other week

Nice to see you, too!

LL lives in Queens and his "handy man" admits he's no electrician. LL knows that heat is not working, but he doesn't pay for heat. I DO. It's currently shut off in the basement until I figure this out. If I can find someone to fix, I can deduct from my rent. Otherwise I have to use these small portable heaters which gets expensive.
