RE Laywer & Building Financials

Buying for the first time and have heard that it's good to have a lawyer go over a building's financials. Since I'm at the very beginning (just started to look), do I hire an RE lawyer now? How did other people go about handling this? Appreciate any advice!

Whoa, Brownstoners, thanks for all the quick replies. Always good to hear from people who's lived through this! Will start making calls. (And thanks Dave, for your lawyer's contact info).

I don't know Pietro Calabretta I but do know Joe, having worked with him for years in advertising. He's a stand up guy and a damn good producer. As a producer, you're only as good as your vendors. And he's the first to spot a sub par vendor. I would imagine he applies the same approach to his home renovations. Lord knows, he's had his fair share.

I know I get a little weary when it comes to 'plugs' on this site, since half the time I'm not sure if it's coming from a credible source or the vendor themselves. But giving posters a hard time will only hurt us all in the end. Some of us really appreciate the tips and advice on this forum and wouldn't want to dissuade other people from disclosing their trustworthy vendors and resources.

mrs L, did you use an architect at any point during the reno or did you work directly with the contractor? i'm new to renos and am not sure which parts require paperwork to be drawn and filed.
