Tapestry Expert/Appraisal
This tapestry is in our dining room (there is also a smaller panel to the left of it, but I don't know how to post more than one photo!). It seems in poor shape, but we'd like to have someone out to look at it, see if it can be repaired/saved and to see if it has any value, historic or otherwise. The house was built in 1905 and we suspect it's original. Anyone know who could give us an assessment? Many thanks!

Direct Buy
Anyone a member of this club? I can't find a way to get info on the brands they carry from the website -- seems you have to show up for an info session and tour. We'll be renovating a kitchen and I'm wondering if Direct Buy is a good avenue for getting supplies and appliances.

Mark Pariti/Men at Work
We're considering hiring Mark for a substantial job which would include a kitchen relocation, electrics and plumbing upgrade. He comes highly recommended, but I notice some unfavorable posts about the work quality and his personality from a couple of years ago -- any recent experiences anyone can share? Many thanks.

That color is gorgeous -- goes great with the tone of the wood in the mantle.

Thanks, all. As for the work -- just to give you an idea: The original kitchen was cut up into exam rooms by a dermatologist two owners ago. He eliminated the back staircase and plunked a serviceable but wonky kitchen in it's place. The owners who bought from him in 1995 kept it as is, using the exam rooms as home offices. We want to restore the back staircase and the original kitchen layout. Additionally, the detrius of at least 5 outdated alarm systems from the doctor's days remains in a Rube Goldberg tangle of ancient bells, wires and switches that adorn the walls, baseboards, cracks and crevices of every room -- so every surface needs care. The electrics need upgraded wiring . . . the list goes on and on. But we are so grateful how structurally sound the house is, for all the beautiful architectural detail that remains and that the woodwork has been so well maintained. We just walked through with our architect over the better part of two days and gave every space a good dressing down. We have a lot of hope, and more than a little anxiety!

Great idea, DIBS, that porch is about the only surface that doesn't need work! As for blogging, it would be another first for me, but if people would be interested, I'm game.

My husband and I purchased the Prospect Park South home and feel very thankful to Brownstoner and the community for all the wisdom and points of view on the comment boards and on the forum during our year-plus search for a home. As first-time homeowners, we'll soon begin a daunting restoration and renovation. In the months ahead the Brownstoner forum will be littered with my photos asking "what is this?" and "where do I find this?" Thanks in advance and stay tuned!

Thanks for picking up on this place, Mr. B -- we didn't end up buying in PLG but will be making the trip for more doubles and hot sauce when we move to Ditmas.
I think there was an article on water-stain removal in the Times recently -- different approaches for white stains and darker stains.

For the price, I want to see kitchen pics on the listing site!

Per the NY Times article, the Bed Stuy house was purchased for 376K in 2004 and they renovated with another 300K -- so they're looking to make a 573K profit?! Seems way out of line with the current economy.
Nice PR article for Bed Stuy, a nabe we are considering.

I don't see a bathroom on the 4th floor of the Lafayette house -- kind of a deal-breaker for me -- 3 bedrooms sharing 1 bath.

Any options for forced-air/central a/c vents that *aren't* those white, square jobs? Our rental has them now and as we're looking around to buy I want to avoid them, though central a/c is a nice amenity.
Don't mind the reno on this one -- how can you tell the flooring is laminate?

We are definitely looking in this nabe (and were seriously thinking about bidding on 107 Rutland which is now in contract). Have to give a shout out to De Hot Pot on Washington -- gave us complimentary doubles while we mulled over the 3 properties we had seen. We are white and felt very welcome.

Architerrorist and the chicken, I'd say the long stroll to the subway might have something to do with slow sales on E 24th street -- it's a deal-breaker for us, I know, though there are some great homes there.

Best latte I've had ever -- velvety foam! And great svc. the 2x I've been.

Yes, we did see the Ebinger house, chicken. There was a lot to love there too. The owners have taken such great care of it. Location was a factor, and we love the corner lot of Albemarle. I guess we also had that "feeling" that people talk about as we walked through the Albemarle house, that it was the one for us. Thanks to all for the congrats -- pics via blog or forum coming soon. Already have a lead on a tapestry expert thanks to vinca.
