electrician recommendation

had Ghassan Fattouh, from Tesla Electric (tel. 646-258-1025) do some electrical work at our house last night and write to say how pleased i was. he came over on pretty short notice, he was on time, extremely professional, and knowledgeable. probably not the cheapest guy around, but he did high quality work, which is always worth it in the long run.

boiler repair

just thought i'd let the b'stoner folks know what a good experience i had yesterday with Joe, from AAL Boiler repair. (459 6th Ave, Brooklyn, (718) 788-1860.
the pilot light housing on my teledyne laars water heater was on the fritz. joe came out, when he said he would, and did a fine job of replacing the part, at a reasonable price, without suggesting additional (not necessary) work, which is what vigalante did last year when i had a problem. so, if you've got boiler problems (gas or oil) call joe.

i'm going with this: north slope, flatbush to named streets. center slope, numbered streets to 9th st. south slope, 9th to prospect expressway. to parse even further, south south slope would be from 15th st. to the expressway. south side of expressway is greenwood, or, if you must, greenwood heights. personally, i don't wish it was the slope, i'm happy it's NOT. :)

no, i haven't used groundworks and don't know anything about them.

if they fall through, check with cary at wild pistil (www.WildPistil.com, cary@wildpistil.com) who did some work on a friends yard that turned out beautifully.

good luck.

good luck and happy gardening.

the entire process has been a FIASCO of epic proportions. if built, or semi built, or partially built, or fully built, brooklynites for generations to come are going to suffer from ay's bad planning, bad faith, bad karma. better job creation opportunities and better affordable housing were and are being lost while our politicos lined up behind marty m. to suck on the teat of ratner's cash cow.

do bklyn a big favor and write a check to the develop don't destroy legal defense fund.

the modernist impulse as inherently fascist? true, as far as it goes. modernism was ALWAYS about eliminating things. in the context of atlantic yards, it's perfectly true that it's the public that's been eliminated, and in its place a manufactured public has been paid to declare their support for the project. the design itself reinforces this erasure -- the anti-public superblocks, demapping of public streets, and delineation of the the 'park' as a 'publically accessible private space' -- all conspire to privatize, which is to say serve capital, not people, or at least not people without capital.

that this project has been force fed to bklyn certainly isn't the architect's fault. it's the politicos who are supposed to represent us. they failed, and we failed to hold them accountable.

the architect is only responsible for his work, which, in this case, totally reinforces the agenda of private power.

i looked in there last night (on my way to Toby's). inside seems untouched. love the six points on tap, which i plan on sampling asap.

i've lived in the 'hood for about 4 years now and couldn't believe how trendy 6th ave seemed last night, with all kinds of hipsters, etc. it looked like williamsburg did about 10 years ago. amazing.

safe haven should do well there.

strange that you would assume that it's your neighbor that needs to do something.

YOU need to do something, as noted in responses.

sounds about right to me. i think "park-slopeification" is really just code for "help, we're being over-run by hipster breeders." white, black, brown, red, whatever. if they're pushing a stroller and dressed like a teen, drinking a $4 coffee, that's park slopification. i noticed it on smith street the other day.

oh well, i guess bklyn can't be cool forever.

try build it green (bignyc.org). they've got tons of stuff. it will be hit or miss on the radiator covers, though.

seems steep to me, prime slope or not.

i agree, educate yourself aboutt the market and see some comps before putting in a bid.

when we moved into our south slope house we replaced the solid roof hatch (coxloft) with a clear skylight/hatch that we can open and close using a long rod. we love it. it gives us lots more light at the top of the stairs. for security, i installed a small set of iron bars to prevent entry from the roof. the drawback is that to get on the roof i have go outside. if i were more creative, i might have put on some hinged bars w/lock, so, when i needed to get on the roof from inside the house, i could unlock the bars and get up there. oh well.
