How about giving people an incentive to estimate as close to the actually sales price as possible. I would think you could track everyone's estimates and at the end of the year award a $ prize to whoever was closest. Not only would we have a vested interest in the accuracy of the widget but it would probably drive up page views also.

Anyone check out the sunken garden at the Hello condo on the Prospect Heights house tour. I thought it would be nice from the pictures but it was really hellish and claustrophobic. These look a little more open but I imagine they would be nearly as awful.

What about the green house that was next door?

Did this place have a green painted brownstone next to it at some point? That was my favorite when I was a kid - made my mother go past it every day when she walked me to school.

I live across from a turf park and it's worked out pretty well. Turf is a necessary evil. Sure it's somewhat ugly but it's better than an unkempt grass park that turns to dirt from overuse and definitely an upgrade from concrete/asphalt. I'll miss having basketball hoops there but will more than gladly concede in order to have a more community/child friendly surface.

> And this is on the wrong side of 4th Avenue, so it is even more not prime.
What is the prime side of 4th Ave? I would have thought it would be the side "closer" to the park. At least it's not directly on 4th ave?

My calculations and streeteasy.com say the square footage is 700 (also says that the last sale was in Aug '08 for $225k). Good to know that it's not just realtors that fudge numbers.

I don't know how reliable c-list is as a barometer for rents. I went on to compare my rent ($1700) to rents in my immediate vicinity ($2200). I know I'm getting a good deal but it's hard to believe I'm paying $500 less a month for what is essentially the same apartment.

I think it's because of the germaphobes. I was at some girl's apartment that had 2 bathrooms and she freaked out when I didn't use the "guest bathroom".

I'm guessing I'm too late for this thread but here goes anyway: Has anyone mentioned yet how much nyc real estate (not to mention the nyc economy) relies on the banking sector? I would think that the banks won't be pulling in nearly as much in the coming years because the government will be regulating them up the ying yang. It will probably be a while before everyone forgets about Depression 2 and lets the banks get back to doing what they do best - coming up with complex schemes to make gobs of money while contributing almost nothing to society.

I've been reading an enlightening article from the New Yorker mag that refutes in part the eco-friendly mantra of "buying local". When you take into account the environmental costs of the complete life cycle of the product, it can make more ecological sense to get your apples from New Zealand than from New York. Food for thought.

I'm pretty sure I went to a pool party at this house when I was a freshman in high school. Raging hormones + girls in bikinis = the only memorable party from that year in my life. If you have teenage kids, you'd be doing a great service to them if you bought this house.

I once bought a bike at the fulton mall ToysRUs that cost me about $90. It served me well but fell apart after a couple of years - that was really my fault because I did nothing to maintain it (at some point the pedal crank came loose and I should have tightened it). I went to a local bike shop to get a replacement and I think it was like $25. Incredible that one little piece cost nearly a third the price of my entire bike.

How about subsidized housing for NYC cops. Pretty sure they don't make a lot and wouldn't it be great (for all) to have cops live in the communities that they patrol? Seems to me that would have a greater impact on the standard of living of most people.

Interesting tidbit about Mr. Naison - he was on the Chappelle show in a skit called "I know black people".

Can't really remember the food but Rancho was definitely the place to go for booze when I was in high school.
Alright, I may guilty of a little embellishment. I get "whiteboy" instead of "whitey". Whitey just sounded better in the context. One positive of the lack of respect on the court is that when I excede expectations I usually get a great response from the crowd - luckily I have a nasty crossover.

As a white "frat boy" type living in fort greene I think I probably experience the most overt type of racism. I'm not really complaining or comparing to treatment blacks get so please spare your ranting. I often play basketball on the playgrounds in the neighborhood and am subject to being called names like whitey and snowflake, and generally given little respect. I experienced a new form of immasculation this past weekend - a guy put a move on me that left me practically on my @ss, got up in my face and then kissed me on the cheek. In general I find it amusing, if not somewhat annoying.

I think the size of the tenant's bedroom is great. I don't do much other than sleep in my bedroom so all I'd need is room for a bed. I'd much rather have the larger space to entertain.

From the floor plan, that doesn't appear to be a "wrap around terrace" - it's referred to as a "tile roof"

"your analogies about getting robbed in supposedly nice areas arent totally applicable."
Plus, there's a huge difference between a purse snatching and someone busting your face in and then gingerly picking up your purse.

Ambience: I enjoyed coming here in the summer when they had the windows open - you could dangle your feet out the window, smoke and have a conversation with someone standing outside. Now that it's winter, the place is sealed up, dark, and extremely loud with horrible acoustics.
Food: I've only had the currywurst. Great compliment to a beer but I don't think I would come here solely for the food.
Service: I think I'm in love with one of the women that works here - she is stunningly beautiful and sincere.
