Mover Recommendation
I used www.callpaultohaul.com today to move some of my daughter's furniture from Astoria Queens to Park Slope. Paul was really prompt, (he got to her apartment before me!), polite and fast. I would highly recommend him.

Land Snails in the Garden
Something is eating up the leaves in my garden. I believe it to be land snails, as we found a few. What can I do to stop the destruction?

Hanging Paintings
We have 3/4 in\ch plaster over brick walls. They have been newly skimcoated and I want to hang paintings on them. The paintings range from 5 to 20lbs, I'm used to drywall, any ideas on what I can do?

Renovating a Bathroom
I have moved into an apartment with a tiny bathroom. Has anyone had any experience with extending the bathroom into the dumbwaiter space? If so, how expensive was it to do?

temporary housing
First let me say that this blog has been a life line for me as I prepare to return to Brooklyn after 23 years. My husband and I are in the process of selling our home, and won't be able to get into our apartment until June. Should we have a lag time of a few monthes, can anyone suggest where I can look for a 3 month (or less) sublet? I am hopeful that we will be out by March. I have 1 small and harmless cat.
We wouldn't need more than a 1 bedroom, or a good size studio, and furnished would be preferable.

Digging out a fireplace mantle
I am moving back to Park Slope after being away 23 years. I am moving into a floor through garden apartment which I've been told has the original mantle encased behind the plaster wall. Is it worth while to dig it out? Has anyone done this?

Thank you all for your advice. Arkady, I do not have picture molding. My husband is really concerned about hanging our art work, and I hate looking at blank walls.

Approval is not an issue in my case, just cost. Is this done often? If I seal up the first floor dumbwaiter will I have to do anything with the other floors?

I just moved here 3 weeks ago and took with me my 1 year old 30" dual fuel viking. It is the best range I have ever owned, and I cook professionally.

Hi,
My husband and I just moved here 2 weeks ago. Our apartment is not going to be ready for about another 2 weeks, (long story). We will have TONS of excellent moving boxes at that time. When do you need them by?

There is a neglected brownstone on Garfield Place between 6th and 7th avenues. I feel really sorry for the occupants on either side of it. I believe an acrimonious divorce has led to the disintigration of that building.

Denton,
My 20 year old daughter just graduated from the Culinary Institute of America. As a entry level pastry chef, the hours are long and the pay is worse. She and two other recent graduates found a 3 bedroom in Astoria for $1700 Mo. She took the smallest room so her share is $500 a month, well within her salary for a week. There are ways that your daughter could live closer within her means.

How big is the apartment? My daughter, who just graduated from The Culinary Institute of America is looking for an apartment with a room mate or 2. Is the apartment near transportation? Do you think the neighborhood is safe for a young 20 year old woman, who might have to work late?
Finally, how much is the rent?

Zeebee, can I ask what kind of rent you paid? I relocating from Cleveland, and you can only imagine the sticker shock that I am experiencing. I will definitely check out Craigslist, I checked out Sublet.com.

tybur6: Why shouldn't owners charge what the market will bear? Why should they do anyone a favor? A rental is a business transaction. Park Slope is a great neigborhood. Thus, it's expensive. If you aren't making enough money, you'll have to live in a less nice neighborhood. Maybe it's not fair, but like my mom used to tell me: life isn't fair.

When I moved I collected all the boxes I needed from my neighborhood the night before recycling pickup. Those Fresh Direct boxes were generally in great shape.

The U-Haul at 4th Ave and 6th St has a used box exchange. You can just drop off your used boxes or take whatever someone else has left.

The Park Slope Food Coop always has boxes for the taking, and some are pretty huge. And as someone who does a receiving shift, taking stuff out of them and putting them out front, they're as clean as you could imagine : )
Don't know if a non-member could make out with a bunch, but I just did exactly what you're doing (boxing up during renovations) and my free box of choice is Coop!

We have a Bluestar that we live (36", though they make a nice 30"). I totally recommend them. That said, you may be better off doing research on the Gardenweb site -- those guys specialize in these types of discussions. http://ths.gardenweb.com/

I love my Viking 36 inch dual fuel stove (and hood), as well as my 36 inch Viking built in fridge. People who see my kitchen also love how they look (i.e., very good for resale). I bought mine from a store in NJ that sells display models and got more than 50% off! Good luck...

One more vote for the Bluestar RNB series. Can't beat a 22,000 BTU burner with even heat distribution. Add in a convection oven, a great broiler, and good looks and you've got a winner.

I'm getting a mid-range Bosch hob and oven fitted in the next week or so - will let you know how it goes. Very good value and excellent reputation so I've got my fingers crossed.
Beyond that, the Bosch dryer that I have is a real trooper.

Thank you all. I will try the beer first, (it's on hand), if that fails I will try out Sluggo.
