Great Movers
A friend had recommended Applause Movers to me when I moved two years ago, and they did such a good job that I hired them again when I moved yesterday. Once again, I was very pleased with them, so I thought I should recommend them to others on Brownstoner.
They arrived right on time, were amazingly fast and efficient, and took great care with my fragile items. They even helped me disassemble my desk to get it up the spiral staircase in my duplex.
They aren't the cheapest guys out there, but you definitely get what you pay for.

The last time I was there, a mouse was running around the dining area. The waiter scooped it up in a cup and threw it outside into the gutter and then proceeded to serve me my salad without washing his hands. I left without touching my food and will never go back there again.
I moved recently and tried to find a place to donate my old mattress to but couldn't find one. (I think Salvation Army would only accept it if I were donating the bed frame and box spring, too.)
I just left mine out on the curb when I moved out and posted a notice on craigslist that it was bedbug-free and free for the taking. When I went back to the apartment the next day to clean up, the mattress was gone.

I posted about them before, but I've used Applause Moving twice now and was very satisfied.

I use iStoreGreen on Hall and Flushing. Their rates seemed comparable to other places I looked at, and if you prepay for six months, you get two months free.

Don't get them from the grocery store -- they often have bugs! A liquor store is a good idea, but bookstores also have lots of boxes they'll give away -- and, needless to say, they're the perfect size for books.

I went to an open house a few weeks ago, and the house exceeded my (admittedly low) expectations. The big front windows really let in a lot of light and took advantage of the great views of the cemetery and the harbor and city in the other direction. It felt very clean and open, despite the narrow width.

I love this place. The food is just as delicious as their Mulberry Street location but the decor is much nicer.
Even though it has great ambiance, I wouldn't recommend it as a date place -- I always end up feeling too stuffed for any romance afterwards.
“There’s no place where you can have a drink and have a sandwich in under two minutes." Ha, ain't that the truth!
The servers at Urban Spring were unbearably slow. It took them almost ten minutes to make a salad because they'd ask me each step of the way if I wanted a certain ingredient, even though it was listed on the menu and I hadn't asked for any substitutions.
I'm excited to try this new place!

Love their veggie meatballs. I eat that for lunch about once a week. Their brunch is amazing, too, serving classic brunch dishes with a twist.

I'd recommend Ramon as well. He's not cheap, but he does a good job. I take all of my things that need more than a simple hem job to him.

One of my favorite restaurants in Brooklyn. Their veggie burger is absolutely amazing, and the sweet potato pie is probably the best dessert I've ever eaten. The staff is always super friendly, too. The only thing I would criticize is the decor -- the white walls make the place feel a little stark -- but I'm there for the food, not the scenery.

No pun, but any "Big Box" type store has to pay people to break down & dispose of large corrugated boxes. Give any one of 'em a try.

Hi,
My husband and I just moved here 2 weeks ago. Our apartment is not going to be ready for about another 2 weeks, (long story). We will have TONS of excellent moving boxes at that time. When do you need them by?

When I moved I collected all the boxes I needed from my neighborhood the night before recycling pickup. Those Fresh Direct boxes were generally in great shape.

The U-Haul at 4th Ave and 6th St has a used box exchange. You can just drop off your used boxes or take whatever someone else has left.

The Park Slope Food Coop always has boxes for the taking, and some are pretty huge. And as someone who does a receiving shift, taking stuff out of them and putting them out front, they're as clean as you could imagine : )
Don't know if a non-member could make out with a bunch, but I just did exactly what you're doing (boxing up during renovations) and my free box of choice is Coop!

We are using extra space on 3rd Ave (can't recall exactly the cross street). They gave us a 5x15' storage space which is perfect, with first month free and a free 2 hour rental van to move in.
I also noticed that there is a place really close by called Treasure Island as well - very close to Ikea and I understood it has pretty decent rates as well.

The salvation army on Quincy in Clinton Hill has old mattresses for sale. I imagine they accept them.

mpw wrote a review about Bati on October 26, 2009 1:03 PM
When this opened, I was really excited to have an Ethiopian place in the neighborhood, but I have to say that I was disappointed by the food. I got the vegetarian platter, and most of the dishes were surprisingly flavorless and dry. I've eaten at a lot of Ethiopian places in the city, and I have to say that Bati is my least favorite. The staff is very friendly and the decor is nice, but I'd rather make the trip down 4th Avenue to Ghenet.
