Fixing Butcher Block Counters
I have a butcher block kitchen counter that has been oiled only. Since I don't cut on it I want to permanently coat over oil with something that will last longer and not dry out. Can you polyurethane over oil?
Soundproofer for Coop Ceiling
I need a soundproof company for noisy child in upstairs apt. My glasses also rattle when people walk across floor.Don't need suggestions on Neighbors behavioral control...been there done that. Just some advice on sound control I can do in the ceilings. Thanks

well gunshots can be heard nightly in Ft Greene, Clinton Hill, and many so called "good neighborhoods". That is snobby and gunshots are a sign of the times in a bad economy. Lefferts Manor homes always sell....whats your friends staying for?

I hope it isn't Julius or the last remaining Triplet....the other two are now dead. Never knew their names.

In Fort Greene on S.Portland and Fulton before Cafe Lafayette
it was a soul food take out run by mother and son. Coco bread was the code word for a bag of pot so the sons mother wouldn't no he was dealing out the take out. Fond memories

Ft. Greene/Clinton Hill has always been a crime zone. Just because it is nearly all white now doesn't mean it is safe. In 1981 when I moved in gunshots, murder of Pratt students, buildings set a flame were the norm. It is a unsafe area. It hasn't gotten better, there are just more people on the streets so the criminals have more to pick from. Sad but true.

I agree with hyacinth bean and it is beautiful but it is an annual. The cheap stockade fence from home depot is cheap and if you put the fence up backwards so the part that you see has the 2x4 showing in the middle that holds the fence together it is alot more attractive and you can use that 2x4 to hold and decorate with flower bags or window boxes etc.

thanks, my apt. is so hot it sucks the oil out and counter looks lighter and dry. I have been doing the oil application about 3 times a year. Watco sounds good...is that at hardware store? BHS...which combo do you use?

I have a kitchen counter from Ikea made of butcher block. I wanted just to oil it and let it age naturally, but since I do not cut on it the every 3 month oiling of it is getting tiresome. My question is... what can go over this to be more permanent and look good after oil has been applied? Polyurethane? Do I need to sand before?

Oh come on heffe54, don't ruin Brooklyn like they have Manhattan with all their slick, uncomfortable, bare, and boring interiors. You can find that in any town....I love a little honky tonk with atmosphere. Let all the "upscale" Brooklyn neighborhoods have that crap, as long as the food and service is good who cares.

Ditmas Park is fantastic. I bought in Ft Greene in the nineties and lived there since 81 and Ditmas reminds me of Ft Greene. It is downtown and is alot safer but it is up and coming, beautiful, safe, on good train lines, and worth the money. I bought here a couple years ago and everything is holding and the neighborhood has more services and people are friendly ( except for a couple old bags in my building). It is close to the park and you really can find parking.

I have an all around problem with noise....heavy footsteps, child running, loud TV and Stero, no carpeting upstairs apt. I hear alot of Vibrations. I think there already is a drop ceiling over the original plaster one. It is a prewar building and I am on the lst floor. How much does something like this cost by the square foot?

Several people on Adelphia St in Fort greene used him. He seems to do good waterproofing on the back of a brownstone. Painting cornices good. Laying a slate porch on the brick house my sister owns in Crown Heights...a total disaster. Brownstone repairs were also bad.

It is also rumored that Scorcese went crazy about the fine hairs around Michael Jacksons hairline and sideburns being plastered to his face with Murrays hair pomade.....so funny. He hated them but in the video it appears Michael won.

That would be wonderful...I remember coming thru the station everynight and seeing the crew setting up. They filmed at night for privacy and security. The eighties were very unique in Bklyn. Ft. Green, where I lived was totally....Crooklyn!

Neighbors can be real pieces of work. Happened to me in Ft Green. I found out neigbor was pissed cause she wanted to buy the house. Anyway, hate came our way for first 2 years and we smiled and keep saying hi and eventually they changed and we were cordial to each other. You have to deal with them, my suggestion wear them out with kindness. It is kinda condesending really so I had fun irritating them with my smiles and it worked to my advantage in the end.

Hands down its got to be Ditmas Park. Great Subways D or B express trains, good restaurants, privacy and land, close to the park, parking or driveways, front porches, trees and flowers and quiet. I lived in Ft Greene for 25 years....just like manhattan now if you want that. Being further out for me is just chill. Census said most diverse nab in Bklyn. My sister lives on south side of Crown Heights...near to park and botanical gardens, no restaurants but a gated alley with a 2 car garage...can't beat that and 550K and up to 700K.

I agree with rh...salvage what you can. lightly sanding and repainting cabinets and putting on new hardware can change everything. I try to stay classic...trendy stuff dates too fast. I use brass cabinet hardware from Moon River Chattel in Williamsburg. I use butcher block from Ikea for counter tops and subway tiles from Loews. Floors..cork is green, many colors available, waterproof and soundproof and goes nice with wood floors already there. If you want new cabinets I found Home Depot and Loews alot more expensive then Cabinet Factory. One is in Bensonhurst. They designed the kitchen from a gut and that service was free. Rosemary, I believe was her name and the installment was included and everything was under $5500. Cabinets went up to ceiling and the kitchen is L shaped with the "cage" for the fridge. Good experience.

after many renovations and very expensive BM and Behr etc. I think Behr is just as good and cost alot less. You must prime and you always need two coats.

so what is your point fsrq....you like living without the freedoms we had in 1980?... which is when I got here. Living in Fort Green was no piece of cake. You my friend are the amateur and a bitter one at that. At least I will sleep good tonight knowing I got under the skin of a know it all fool.

I love it ....lets bring back the old NY or a hint of it at least. This city has so many restrictions now, no beer drinking on your stoop, no bike riding in hasidic neighs, no dancing without a cabaret license, no more Vox Pop because they are "pinkos" WTF

it always was "vintage row" before it was trendy to live in Brooklyn. there was even a salvation army. the only difference was you could afford the stuff.

re original post -- that seems very expensive! but really, what do i know? maybe a million dollars for a 2 bed south slope apartment while new york state and the mta slash their budgets and the stock market falters and everyone worries about the effect of retrenched government spending on a global level is actually reasonable -- i really don't know.
but if you love it and you can afford it, why not? assuming you don't want to rent and wait until the world economy is more stable...

We are in the process of buying a 2 BR 2 Bath (1300 sq. feet) in a prewar building in Prospect Heights, and I'm fairly familiar with the market. Are the carrying charges ridiculously low? Because that price does seem out of line, esp. for a building with no elevator or amenities.

Lee Maison's ill-informed nonsense is hardly worth commenting on. I wonder if her Lefferts Manor friends are anywhere near as "stuck" as she is in the new construction condo she foolishly bought without doing proper research?

If I were the buyer I wouldn't buy anything right now. There's every indication that we're in for a long haul w/ this economy. In one or two years I feel things will get much, much worse.

If you are talking about the new condo I think you are, that developer has two other properties coming to market very soon. I think he paid top dollar for those lots... $600,000+ for the tear downs.
That said, Prospect Park Terraces (Lake Windsor) is now selling at mid $600's.
On 15th Street alone there has to be 100+ units coming to market... I think I saw prices in the low $700's.
For $9oo per SQ. FT. they better have a fully decked out safe room/bomb shelter in the cellar for when the end times come.

Is this by chance with a certain broker? Initials are P.B.?
Look at his Corcoran site and check out ALL his condo listings. He represents quite a few newish condos and as far as I see only one is contract out of his pipeline of the last half year. This tells you something.
IMHO - in case this is indeed him - he is off market with his prices by about 20% on new condos.

$900/sf anywhere in Brooklyn is just nuts, in my opinion. You can get a lot more for your money without sacrificing much if any location.
