If it means the train comes more frequently and then gets me to my destination faster, they can run the trains on voodoo and fairy dust for all I care.

“We have beauty, and we have the good people.” We also have rising crime and human bodies being found in cardboard boxes in neighborhood parks. No thanks.

mattt wrote a review about Hanco's on December 8, 2008 1:40 PM

This place sells one hell of a sandwich. It also has the advantage of being close to where I live. The sandwich may be smaller or more expensive than its counterparts in Chinatown, but I don't live in Chinatown. I live in a land where ham and cheese sandwiches are sold for $9 at french bistros. And while I could travel to Chinatown for a Bahn Mi, once I factor in the waste of time and the subway fare, I think this sandwich is well worth it.

Some tips for the critics:
For those who complain about how long it takes to get served, call ahead by 10 minutes.
To those who say its got too much mayo on it, ask for less mayo. My wife generally asks for no butter. Hanco's will follow your instructions.

Brooklynnative,

I'm sure Rob doesn't need any help defending himself, so I'll chime in on behalf of us non-dog owners. Leash laws serve a lot of purposes. One of them, obviously is to protect man and dog alike from unleashed powerful aggressive dogs like some pitbulls. Another--the one that you ignored--is to protect the unleashed dog from getting hurt at the hands of more powerful dogs, cars, paranoid schizophrenics, or whatever.

If your yappy dog is off the leash and is hurt by a dog that is on the leash, the unleashed dog owner is at fault.

While a couple of dishes are passable, its really not worth it. The service is atrocious. Not all the time, but often enough to give me pause any time someone suggests going here. And when the service is bad, the food is bad, because it means your meal has been sitting for a while or has been served to someone else.

Brownstoner -- You've been snowed by local groups like "stop bhod." People have a knee-jerk reaction to the idea that there's a jail in their midst. They think, if there's a jail, there must be criminals, and criminals are bad, so jails are bad. But the fact remains that this neighborhood has thrived over the last couple of decades in spite of the jail. Property values have risen. Local stores and restaurants and bars, etc., have opened and closed and opened again and done quite well. The worst thing about the jail, is that it interupts the flow of commercial storefronts, which wouldn't be quite as bad if that terrible rental building at Atlantic and Court didn't do the exact same thing.

Yassky and Thompson and Squadron are in the pockets of a few rich folks who live on State St. This issue is stupid and ought to go away.

I assume the Carroll Gardens # is brought down a little by Columbia and Red Hook, some of which is pricey and some of which is not. One would expect Cobble Hill to counteract the drag that Red Hook has on the Carroll Gardens #s, so if I had to guess, I'd guess that Cobble Hill is included in Brooklyn Heights, where the zip code splits from 11201 to 11231, which according to this map, is at Kane. http://www.usnaviguide.com/zip.htm.

As long as the kids stay off my bocce court while I'm rolling, and the parents don't mind my swearing every now and then, its all fine with me... the kiddies can drink up.

I haven't bought, but I went to look last Sunday. Seems like a nice building. The block, however, is a mess. Looks like construction across the street will be going on for a while.

Doesn't seem like Ideal is any great shakes either. The apartments aren't going to rent at those prices either.

mattt wrote a review about Lobo on October 17, 2008 1:52 PM

Lobo serves only two functions as far as I can tell. First, it provides decent margeritas. Second, I don't know where else I can get a bowl of melted cheese to eat with chips.

Degentrification? Gowanus Lounge? I don't think you all realize how awesome a vietnamese sandwich can be. As a devoted Hanco's patron, you 7th ave folks should count yourselves very very lucky.

Went to one of the meetings for one of the groups that are trying to stop the expansion just to see what the fuss was about. What a bunch of assholes. They dress up their argument as being about crime and human rights for the inmates, when all they're really worried about is property values (which won't be affected by this at all) and not wanting people who visit people in jail wandering through the neighborood (i.e. property values again). Screw them. Its the city's property, it makes sense for them to use it for the same purpose they've been using it for, and if it includes street-side retail (which I think every building that fronts Atlantic Avenue should be required to include), so much the better.

Another wine bar for Smith Street? I think Sample and the Jake Walk are plenty, especially once you consider that Black Mountain is just over on Hoyt, Donna Da Vine on Atlantic and the Clover Club (not a wine bar, but still). Enough already.

Now the bbq place, that is a damn fine idea.

mattt wrote a review about Zaytoons on July 24, 2008 2:58 PM

Its generally mediocre with a few standouts. The pita is very good. The pickles are fantastic. Many of the salads are good. The pizza is overrated.

The places on Atlantic are much better.

mattt wrote a review about ChipShop on July 18, 2008 2:34 PM

All of these reviews miss the best things on the menu. Personally, I think the fish-n-chips are a little overrated, but if you must have it, have the plaice, which is far superior to the cod. I avoid the fried fish though. No, the best menu items are the chicken curry, shephards pie, the lamb stew, the chicken/mushroom and steak/kidney pies. Oh, and the mac and cheese with sausage and peas. And the variety of great beer is near unparalleled.
