Window repair
I need someone to repair the replacement windows on my brownstone. I think they need new ballasts--some don't stay open.

Does anyone know anything about the drug raid on Sackett Street ( between Hoyt and Smith) last week?

refinish front door, paint iron, etc
does anyone know who to hire to refinish our huge wooden front door, and possibly paint the iron work outside ( this may be a different person?)

I just had my 4 story brownstone, that is designated landmark, redone by Metro Restoration. It cost 42,000, and worth it. I have seen other outfits mess houses up for a little bit less cost. I would wait and get the moeny rather than hire someone who is not great--it is so expensive either way.
My house looks fabulous.

The person who says you have to spend more is wrong. Metro put detail back where they was none, were professional, courteous and clean, and Hassan, the owner, was great to deal with.
My neighbor used Edson who also gave me a quote of around 80,000, and my neighbor agrees, mine looks exactly as good as his. He is a little sorry he paid so much.
(Another neighbor used D&S, who are a nightmare, their work looks terrible (pink and crumbly) and they have been back to his house to fix stuff that is falling apart after a month.)

The person who says you have to spend much more is wrong.Metro used a scaffold, they put detail back where they was none, were professional, clean and I am really relived. I would not use Buscarello, definitely not R&S, who are terrible, sloppy and their work falls apart. My house looks fabulous. I have had a lot of workers in my house doing many jobs-- we renovated this house from a five family to a three--and I have never had a better result for my money.

After doing a lot of research in my neighborhood, I had my brownstone facade done by Metro Restoration. My house looks amazing, and his price was really good, so I would talk to them.

Does the neighbor have a permit posted in the windows for the renovation? If not call the nyc buildings dept.
Re: the dog. go to the neighbor's and talk to them about the dog, explain nicely that the barking bothers you.

Tom, he completely designed my garden so beautifully, reasonably priced--he knows what to plant that will thrive. He is an artist. Brooklyn Gardens,718- 858-7836

please list them here first! There are quite a few folks here that need salvage that might want them. For example, we are looking for a pair of pocket doors. Got any of them?

We recently used a nonprofit service called rebuilers resource or something like that. They came with a truck and took a ton of stuff from our renovation to be reused and we got a tax write off. Don't have the info with me, think you can find them on a google search

My neighbors have like 5 dogs and one or two of them barks at everything and growls at us when we walk outside. If the barking gets ridiculous I throw a fire cracker out the back door of my house. It scares the dogs and they stop barking. I don't throw it near the animals, but the sudden loud noise simply frightens them. If I was consistent about it I am fairly certain the animals would be conditioned not to bark at all. Give it a try.

In this price they reset the front and back bluestone patios, and fixed a drain.

These are some interesting solutions. Going directly to a neighbor certainly helps, but when that fails, has anyone considered using a mediator?
I'm a reporter working on an article on mediation, and I'm looking for people who have used a third party to these barking dog disputes. Maybe mediation worked; maybe not. If you have a story you'd like to share, please contact me at afitzgeral@usatoday.com and you can tell me how it went.
