I saw these all over the neighborhood yesterday and just thought it was a cute stunt. No harm, no foul. Lighten up folks.

I simply love this place. I would eat a burrito from here everyday if possible.

I'll take Union Market any day over a dark, empty, abandoned looking storefront.

I attended an open house in this building in 2004 for a smaller and less maintained apartment that sold for $510k, so I think this could get close to asking. The $35k parking spot is worth it since parking is at a premium in Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens (this street is on the border). Cheever Place is actually very quiet and lovely and its much better to have a unit facing there rather than on Hicks. I saw the place in the summer with the windows closed and the AC running and you could still hear the BQE traffic. The kitchen was cramped so I imagine this unit has a similar kitchen.

jwald wrote a review about House of Pizza & Calzone on June 12, 2009 3:24 PM

The pizza here is good. It's not thin crust like Lucali, but it is a nice place to grab a good slice and it also has a nice open backyard area.

I've never set foot in this section of the park as no dogs, no bikes and, apparently, no fun is allowed.

I've lived across the street from this little eyesore for years, so it is finally nice to see some progress. The place was so full old stacked newspapers that it just looked like a big fire hazard.

I don't get all the negative comments. This is a great article about a couple of NYers moving back to NY after raising a family in Jersey. Good for them for taking the leap. Their story is not rare, but the fact that they chose Williamsburg makes it more interesting.

Posted by: jwald at June 1, 2009 10:19 AM in response to New Jersey Couple Opts for McCarren Views

Agree with southbrooklyn. Mountain bikes are much heavier than road bikes so they do not make good commuter bikes. Because road bikes are lighter, you also do not need as many gears. However, if you are just not comfortable or confident riding on a road bike due to the forward position and prefer to sit in a more upright position, then a mountain bike is a better pick.

CG ups- The dog beach can be easily reached by entering the park on the 9th Street entrance and following the path straight into the park to the lake. There are some signs leading the way. A portion of the lake is fenced off for the dogs. It's very refreshing for dogs in the summer if they like swimming as much as my dog does.

Posted by: jwald at May 11, 2009 2:12 PM in response to Prospect Park Vigilante Wages Canine Campaign

As a dog owner who lives nearby, I don't understand why a park as large as Prospect Park does not have a dog run. It would probably reduce the need for owners to go off leash in the park. The dog beach is okay in the summer, but even then it's stressful to be there when the stroller moms have their kids off leash who run up to "pet" (ie. pull your dog's ears/tail while screaming) your dog. End rant.

rob- Thanks, but I think I'll stay in Brooklyn where I have lived all my life. It's not a crime to envision better things for this city. If you like, however, you can take some of the dirt from Brooklyn and your arrogance back to Jersey.

jwald wrote a review about Buttermilk Channel on March 30, 2009 1:58 PM

I had a great brunch there a couple of weeks ago. Although I was annoyed at first for the 30 minute wait, the Bloody Mary you get with the brunch made the wait a lot easier. The service was very pleasant and the food was solid (short rib hash was very tasty). This is a great addition to the this part of Carroll Gardens and I would definitely go back for dinner.

jwald wrote a review about Faan on February 12, 2009 1:14 PM

Went once, never again. Terrible service and blah food.

"You think in this economy, Apple is going to invest millions into a store in an area with this little foot traffic?''

I agree. A downtown location (like Atlantic Avenue) with all of the subway lines nearby makes much more sense. A Williambsurg location would only be convenient to those in Williamsburg, thus making the Soho location the most convenient for most people in Brooklyn. Either way, I don't see Apple making the move to Brooklyn just yet.

DannyBKNY- I totally remember Foxy Den when I was growing up in Sunset Park! There was another one called Sweet Cherry on 42nd that I used to pass by on the way to church (sooo not kidding). I totally get why people in the area are upset by it. As industrial as it may be, there are plenty of residences nearby. This seems to have become big business in Sunset Park for the few years, which is really too bad.

As for DUMBO = Soho, they must be referring solely to the housing stock (lofty apartments) since the streets of DUMBO resemble a ghost town compared to Soho's sheer density.

My husband and I walked in there for brunch on a wintry Sunday to give the place a try. We were told to wait at the bar because they were booked. Half the tables (not kidding) were empty. After 20 minutes, we left and went to Bar Tabac, never to return. First impressions do make a difference...

Also, getting back on topic, I've lived down the block from this spot for five years and have seen two businesses come and go. I hope this new one sticks...

Agree with CGfan. As a Brooklynite "lifer" who attended public school from K to 12, there are plenty of good schools if your kids are smart and well-behaved. I attended IS51 and I know for certain my parents didn't have to pull any magic tricks for that to happen.

The brunch is not bad, but not great. However, they do make a good french toast and pretty good burgers. I agree their outdoor seating is a big plus in the summer.

jwald wrote a review about Bocca Lupo on December 16, 2008 4:32 PM

I love this place! Great for brunch and dinner and the wine list is excellent. It is loud though thanks to the many young children dining with their parents. And they really should provide some pillows or cushioning for that window ledge seat.

Tanoreen is one of two things I miss about Bay Ridge (the other being Shore Road). Great lamb dishes and pitas.

This is actually Vinegar Hill. I attended several open houses in this building and I'm glad we walked away. Most of the apts are "loft-like" spaces without separate rooms so this owner probably put up the walls to create the bedroom.

I agree, the old orange trains are much better. These newer trains have less seating capacity and tend to crowd up much more. This will make my commute all the more suckier.

All of my finest encounters with racism directed at me, an innocent kid trying to get to middle school and high school, occurred in Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst. Not 50 years ago, but 20 years ago. So yes, MGP and ENY are correct that certain neighborhoods have a history of issues with minorities.

Luluc's pancakes are life affirming. Hope that doesn't overstate how much I enjoy them. The service is alway's very good and I have always had good brunches there. My only quibble is that the tables are too tightly packed together and the line for brunch is off-putting.
