Amazing the number of bad reviews considering this place always seems to be so busy. Guess I know where to go if I'm in the mood for a veggie burger.

I love H&M!!!!!!!!!! And I am not a hipster.

As per Wikipedia (I know, I know), Vinegar Hill stretches from the East River waterfront to Front St and from the Brooklyn Navy Yard to Bridge St, roughly comprising a six block area.

Townhouse- That SNL sketch is classic and spot on. Thanks for the tips on how to handle legspreaders (aka. man-sitters). I will put them to use.

jwald wrote a review about Tanoreen on November 10, 2008 1:24 PM

Tanoreen is one of two things I miss about Bay Ridge (the other being Shore Road). Great lamb dishes and pitas.

This is actually Vinegar Hill. I attended several open houses in this building and I'm glad we walked away. Most of the apts are "loft-like" spaces without separate rooms so this owner probably put up the walls to create the bedroom.

I agree, the old orange trains are much better. These newer trains have less seating capacity and tend to crowd up much more. This will make my commute all the more suckier.

All of my finest encounters with racism directed at me, an innocent kid trying to get to middle school and high school, occurred in Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst. Not 50 years ago, but 20 years ago. So yes, MGP and ENY are correct that certain neighborhoods have a history of issues with minorities.

jwald wrote a review about Joya and Song on October 27, 2008 12:42 PM

Considering how busy Joya always seems to be, the food and service are usually very good. Their calamari is on of the best I have ever had and the veggie spring rolls are delicious. Very inexpensive and good.

Can someone explain which neighborhoods are North and which are South Brooklyn? I always thought South Brooklyn just referred to Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill and Red Hook.

"Brooklyn and Manhattan should be working together to come up with common marketing strategies to keep businesses in New York rather than trying to steal from one another."

I do believe Brooklyn is a part of NY.

Their prix fixe during the weekdays is a phenomenal deal considering all of the dishes are tasty. The pork chop entree is delicious and their oatmeal pancakes are good for brunch. Service is always very good.

A personal source says her friend will be opening a wine shop next door to TJ's. We'll see...

I pretty much stopped going to this theater & BN precisely to avoid the hordes of pre-teens and teens who hangout at all hours being rowdy inside and outside of both buildings. I'm not too surprised by this story.

jwald wrote a review about Cafe Luluc on September 12, 2008 12:37 PM

Luluc's pancakes are life affirming. Hope that doesn't overstate how much I enjoy them. The service is alway's very good and I have always had good brunches there. My only quibble is that the tables are too tightly packed together and the line for brunch is off-putting.

Blackstoner kinda has a point. Target is awesome, but the rest are the same crap stores you find in the Atlantic and Fulton Malls. What does it take to get more appealing shops into Brooklyn?

"shopping for furniture shouldn't require a trip to manhattan"

Absolutely agree. We really do need more home furnishing stores in Brooklyn. There are plenty of people here with money who need nice place settings and espresso machines. And no, I am not being sarcastic.

To ppw and all other similarly inclined b'stoner posters- If you are going to slam a decent restaurant over food and service, you should be a little more specific as to why. Just saying...

jwald wrote a review about on August 28, 2008 2:50 PM

I had dinner there just once and I thought it was great. The lamb paillard and roasted cod were sublime and our pasta appetizer was also very good. It is loud, but so are most busy Italian restaurants.

The waterfalls are an eyesore and have not generated the public interest or revenue the City was hoping for. Also, aesthetically, the exhibit would have been better with just two waterfalls under the Brooklyn Bridge so each could be viewed from Manhattan and Brooklyn. Instead, we get stuck with backside views of ugly scaffolding and dead tree leaves.

Contrary to popular belief, stores like Costco and BJ's don't just sell gallon vats of mayo and 40 roll packs of paper towels. They also sell individual items and at a better price, thus their popularity in both cities and burbs.

Snark- You can definitely here the trains from there since this property is almost across the street from the point where the F/G lines surface above ground. An offer shy of $1mill seems fair.

jwald wrote a review about Cubana Cafe on August 19, 2008 1:45 PM

I like this place even though I am Latin and am aware that it is not 100% authentic. That said, the empanadas, Cuban sandwiches and the picadillo with either beef or turkey are quite tasty. It is incredibly cramped inside so the outer tables are worth the wait. Brunch is OK, as is the service.

It is a bit frustrating that you can almost touch Gov. Island from Brooklyn, yet you have to got to Manhattan to get there. I don't care who owns the island, but they can at least have a ferry from Brooklyn make a stop at Gov. Island to make it more accessible. If you build it, they will come.

jwald wrote a review about Bar Tabac on August 15, 2008 12:30 PM

This is my favorite neighborhood bistro by far. Having brunched there numerous times, I must say they have the tastiest croque monsieur and their signature Eggs Bar Tabac is to die for. For dinner, the mussels, burgers and steak frites are all delicious. The food is simple and that's why its so good. The service has always been good to us and I don't quite know what the gripes about service are based on though my husband and I are regulars.

jwald wrote a review about Alma on August 13, 2008 1:18 PM

I too have only had the enchiladas the few times I went there and they were always yummy. This is the place to go if you want to enjoy a great view with friends and a pitcher of sangria or margaritas.

benson- I don't get your comment at all. This discussion is silly to me because of the so-called article that spurred it. As a young minority who encountered racist remarks from whites in Brooklyn, the "social situation" is far from silly to me. My point is that while I was growing up in Brooklyn, people around me did not place such an emphasis on which neighborhood or borough was better. Hope your not trying to pick more fights.

Posted by: jwald at August 12, 2008 4:32 PM in response to The Next New Brooklyn

I concur with with bklynite and 1842. This is a rather silly discussion ignited by a questionably sourced NYMag article. As a lifelong Brooklynite, my experience was very similar to East New York's experience at 2:09. I grew up in Sunset Park in the 80s and early 90s, we visited family in Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights and shopped in Downtown and Bay Ridge. Some neighborhoods you avoided. It was not a big deal what ethnicity you were as long as you were respectful. Also, if you find your current Brooklyn neighborhood boring, it's only a matter of exploring other neighborhoods to find the right fit. The bottom line is that Brooklyn will never be a replica of Manhattan and that's exactly why many people live in Brooklyn.

Oh and I have to agree that Dave was a bit rude to Adam.

Agree with brownie. This is right down the block from me and this particular block is very long, quiet, tree-lined and stocked only with brownstones. Many of the brownstones on that block have been renovated or are in the process of being renovated. I'm a little suspicious there are no interior shots, but I think it will get close to asking.

jwald wrote a review about Lucali on August 7, 2008 12:41 PM

It's difficult to write a review of this place because it will only contribute towards making this place more popular and more difficult to get a table. The pizza and calzones are phenomenal. The crust is thin and has the right amount of char without it tasting burnt. The ambience is lovely and you can watch as the owner makes the pies. The wait staff is absolutely sweet. We've taken all of our friends their and it has always been perfect. I could never move away from Carroll Gardens thanks to this place. I hope they expand in the near future to keep up with the demand.

Wow, I sense a lot of anger there wine lover. Are you the broker selling this house?

jwald wrote a review about Barrio on August 6, 2008 2:30 PM

We had dinner there a couple of weeks ago and it was great. The sangria was delicious and the guacamole was outstanding. One of our appetizers came out late so they comped it no questions asked. I would definitely return just for the overall look of the place and service. I don't feel it was overpriced since the prices are consistent with other neighborhood restaurants.

jwald wrote a review about Patois on August 5, 2008 5:02 PM

Cafe Luluc, which is two blocks down, is also a much better bistro than Patois.

Biff- I think you are talking about piraguas, which is basically the Caribbean/Latin version of shaved ice with tropical flavored syrups. There are usually a few of these in Sunset Park during the summer.

jwald wrote a review about Patois on August 5, 2008 1:19 PM

Patois is very hit or miss. I actually like their dinner service better than the brunch service. I've often had undercooked eggs and stale bread, which is why I haven't been back for months. It's a nicer place in the winter when the fireplace is crackling. Bar Tabac is a much better bistro.

Three froyo stores within walking distance of each other is a recipe for disaster. It'll be interesting to see which one closes first.

The pizza and food overall is very good. The service is okay, but a bit pretentious for what it is. It's just pizza folks, no need for the attitude.

The Nicky's in Boerum Hill is just as good as the original. Their Banh Mi w/chicken is very tasty.
