professional weatherproofing?

I tried weatherproofing my windows last year, but to no avail. the only thing that seemed to work was the plastic film which the cats got to pretty quickly. Is there anyone who I can pay to come in and caulk, weatherstrip, etc correctly?

Workshop/Woodshop Cooperative in Bklyn?

Anyone know of a workshop/woodshop situtation that I could join part-time? I would like a place to go on weekends that has some power tools and space where I can work on small furniture projects. Happy to pay a monthly fee/rent to have access...

(I currently live in a coop where we can't do loud work, i.e. table saw, on evenings and weekends.)

just found one on my own, but would love any other suggestions or commentary on the one below...

Haven't been by to check it out yet (will report) but looks pretty cool. Over in East Williamsburg. It's space for artisans of all types, and has a woodshop, metal shop, photography studio, etc. You become a member ($30/month for a year) and then you pay as you go. For the woodshop, a one day pass is $50, 5-day pass is $175 and then they have a special pass for $300/month where you get unlimited access to all the shops.

Well, went and checked out 3rd Ward. As a facility it's great. Huge woodshop, metal shop, etc. And since most members make it their full-time gig during the weekdays, it was totally quiet and uncrowded on Sunday when I went to visit.

But it is a bit out of the way (L train is the closest stop).

Anyone into figuring out how we might create one of these closer to the Boerum Hill/Park Slope/Ft Greene neighborhood? I'd be into it. Maybe renting out some work/commercial space in Gowanus?

We actually live on Clinton and Myrtle, a block away -- while it's a 15-20 min walk to the useful subways (Q, B, R) at DeKalb, you do get to walk through the park, and the area (esp Myrtle Ave) has been increasingly developed in the last year since we moved in. We really like it.

It should also be noted that this location is EXCELLENT if you drive to work/have a car. It's incredibly convenient to the BQE and the two bridges into Manhattan. We don't have a car, but we do rent Zips a lot and find the location great in that respect.

However, if trying to entice people from other areas of Brooklyn or Manhattan where subways are more plentiful, its distance from the subway and the current rough-around-the-edges status of Myrtle is going to be an issue. We almost didn't buy our coop because of it. Though now we're very glad we did.

I also thought there was going to be a swimming pool rather than fountain which made a lot more sense - a safe place for families to hang in the summer. A fountain isn't the same thing. Also, I thought the facade was going to have much glass and variety. It appears a lot of the good stuff got cut during value engineering...

It should be noted that these rentals have been listed at these prices for at least few months now, so clearly there hasn't been much interest.

I'm curious why, if they now have their CofO they decided to go with rentals rather than sell them off?

Also, btw, this location isn't perfect but it's not bad. A block from the park, will be across from a new condo development, and is within a few blocks of great restaurants. Certainly not worth those prices though.

Anyone know what's happening with this? scheduled completion dates? Am not a fan of the exterior design, but am willing to reserve judgement until i see floorplans and prices...

What about a ventless condensation dryer? We bought a Bosch condensation dryer for our coop apt as we didn't want to go through the expense and hassle of venting out the side (and we couldn't go up to the roof). Condensation dryers hook up to the same waste water pipe as the washer, no need for anything else.

We LOVE the dryer. Super quiet and dries just like a normal dryer (we were worried about that), and uses less energy. Now we don't understand why they aren't standard for everyone...

It was a little more expensive than a normal dryer but certainly MUCH less than any venting solution.

Two suggestions:

We live in a coop and were concerned about potential water leakage. Our plumber installed a FloodStop system (www.floodstop.com), which is a little sensor installed under the washer that is connected to the water shut-offs. If water touches the sensor, it immediately shuts off the water supply. It is hardwired, however, so you'll have to get your electrician involved there too, but since you already have to deal with a new dedicated outlet, you should add that on.

Also, we decided to go with a Bosch ventless condensation dryer. Have to say we were initially worried about whether it would dry as well as a normal one, but we are happy to say it works great! And uses less energy! Slightly more expensive than a normal dryer, but paid for itself since we didn't have to pay for any venting work.

Well, that link clearly didn't work. Go to www.handlesets.com, search for Ives FS441.

thanks for posting the info on 3rd Ward, this is a great idea, and most likely a very useful facility to many New Yorkers!

I'm looking for the same thing, but closer to Park Slope.

I recommend Aladdin Plumbing and Heating located in Clinton hill. They've done work for me before (W/D install actually). I've known these guys a long time. They're consummate professionals and, while not cheap, they're honest and will do the job right.

Christopher John Electrical- resonable prices, men are courteous and wear shoe booties to protect the floors before they come into your home (I love those shoe booties) and they vaccuumed before they left. Very professional and resonable. I have never had a better experience with any contractor.
