Bay Ridge Farmers Market to start this Saturday
Here is the info for the Bay Ridgers who wanted to know. The Green Market will start this Saturday, Oct 4th at the old Key Food Parking lot on 3rd ave and 94th st. It will start at 8:00am and go until 5:00pm There will be produce, meat and fish.
Someone asked before from another nabe how to get a Green Market in their nabe and I think if enough people went to the Comminity board and requested, the would contact the Green Market people to see if they would be interested in having one. Plus I think many people from Bay Ridge contacted the Green Market to express interest and that's how it came to be.

Bay Ridge gets its Green Market!
We just got an email from Vincinte Gentile's office saying that a Press Conference will be held at the old Key Food Parking Lot on Monday 2pm to announce the arrival of the Farmers Market. My guess is that's where it will be held every Satruday.

Bay Ridge Food Coop
FYI for fellow Bay Ridgers: There will be a meetiing tonight, August 5th to discuss the creation of the Bay Ridge Food Coop (BRFC). The meeting be held at the Library on 83rd and Ridge, 2nd floor. Meeting will begin at 6:30.
The more support the faster we will get this off the ground. We need more food options in the nabe.
Other meetings are scheduled for August and Septmeber. I will keep you posted.

what i meant to say was you could probably get a studio for about 700 or so.

you could try here in Bay Ridge. i know that my friends rent a large basement apt that is a seperate one bedroom for about 1000 a month. So maybe you could get a small studio for about that much.

i agree that the salty dog would be a good place to watch football as i live 3 blocks from there and it is always showing sports. But i remember when i lived in park slope there used to be a place called the Carriage house on 7th ave and 6th st. They were a sports bar, always having parties for the games.

you know, i feel like telling her she needs a bigger store and more workers now. She seems to be very busy and popular now but not changing to meet the demands of her business. i hope this doesn't lead to her loosing business because I really find her cakes to be the tastiest in the nabe. plus all of her ingredients are preservative free.

i sencond that notion, BRG. i'm hoping they find another location or that Walgreens does some good will and let the green market use the parking lot on Saturdays. its good business because tell me when will Walgreens have up to 50 people in their parking lot at any given time on a saturday? i have to say i never had any intentions of shopping at that walgreens as it is not close to my house but since i to the green market EVERY saturday i would be more apt to shop for my pharmacy needs, etc.

Not to mention the pastor, Mr Emmerick would not even meet with preservationsist of the community to disscuss how important this building was to us. I found it strage that he would not even hear another side to it.
I'm sure that 109 years ago the congregation's intentions were not to work their butt off getting it built only to have it torn down. Also let's not forget that many people were resting in peace on the grouds and their tombs and headstones had to be relocated.
You know, Grand Central Station was almost torn down in the 60s because it was privately owned and the owners did not want to repair it. Can you imagine if preservationists did not win the fight, along with Jackie Onasis to save that building? It is one of NYC's gems. Now I know that the Green Church is not Grand Central but Bay Ridge is not NYC and we'd like to keep the treasures we have as they represent what is great about a neighborhood.
And the way there is a side to this story that rarely gets written about in the press. The demoliton of the church's rectory, which is attached to a row of limestones is also being torn down. This has the families living next to it bittng their nails as they feel the demolition of a house in their row will render the rest of the townhouses unsafe. Engineers's swear that it is safe but the failies showed me stories in the NY times where a similiar situation occured and other townhouses simply crumbled. And they asked to meet with pastor to discuss this and he refuses. What a nice pastor, huh?

I'm guessing this is going to be in the 60s or low 70s and shore rd. The recently passed rezoning laws won't allow for this in the 80's and upwards.

Try putting smaller steam valves on your upstairs radiators to redistribute the heat evenely. You may have to do a few trials with different sizes in different rooms before you get it to you liking. We had to do this with our entire 8 unit coop in PS and we actually got it to a point where the people on the top and bottom floors were comfortable. Then when we moved to BR, we had to do the same with our townhouse when we found that downstairs was a lot warmer than upstairs but again with trial and error we got it to a place where both floors are comfortable and we arent breaking the bank.
If you buy steam valves at a local hardware store they usually come with a guide to placing the valves in the areas of your house based on where your thermostat and boiler are located.

Have you tried contacting a real estate agent yet? Maybe they can steer you in the right direction. We bought in Bay Ridge three years ago and we used Re-Max on 81st and 3rd ave. Also Aguayo and Hubner in Park Slope also helped us look as they were selling our Park Slope apt. They had a broker in Bay Ridge at the time so they had some Bay Ridge listings. I'm really not familiar with the rent to buy market but maybe a realtor can help you get started.

Wow there are more Bay Ridgers on here than I thought. but I'm glad to see that ther are people who care about preservation in the nabe. My hubby and I bought a limestone on 79th between 3rd and 4th. While some of the original detail was stripped away, some of it remain and we plan on restoring what we can.

I think that monstrosity (sp?) is actually going to be two town homes, if I read the work order correctly. I have to say its actually not that bad looking. I was shocked to see that it wasn't simpley a square box and that someone put some thought into it before construction.

I also walked by this place many times and wished I had the money to buy it and then the money to fix it. Fortunately as much as these homes to be demo-ed stick out like sore thumbs, I have noticed many that are being bought and fixed up. I do wish I could save every one but I guess its just not in the cards. I don't even go by the Green Church. Its too painful. I put in my time protesting on a cold Saturday and the petition recieved over 1000 signatures but I guess when private property is at stake, the public has no say.

Ok, I can't believe I'm going to write this but here goes. To ask a spirit to leave in a nice way, you burn sage leaves. For some reason this seems to work. My friend moved into an apt. where a murder took place and the poor young man was obviously not ready to go. So he hung around but a bit too much around for my friend and her roomates's level of comfort. They consulted somoe sort of clairvoyant on the matter and that was the solution. And it worked.
good luck.

nybk: You're in bay Ridge right? you know what's funny? I tell my hubby that sometimes if one of the eldery people here have their windows open you can just smell the cats and must as you walk by their open windows. There are certainly a lot of older people living here and I guess they are tired and probably financially unable to do repairs and udates. It just something very funny to me, people who collect cats.
Posted by: italiana71 at October 8, 2008 3:09 PM in response to new Victorian stinks of cat pee and poo...maybe mold too??
Hi,
Our limestone also smelled terrible when we moved in. Turned out the owners were not dilligent about picking up after the cat and i found mounds of poop in the corner of the basement. The rug in the basement also stunk. I have to say that after ridding the basement of poop and shampooing the rugs the smell has gone away. I used bleach on the concrete basement floor to rid of any residual poop smell. Also keep the windows open as much as you can. After some paint and a good cleaning the smell should go away.
the bathroom was original, I think, and was mildly moldy smelling. Turned out that the wooden vanity was pretty water logged. Once we got rid of that piece it was much better. we've been in the place for 3 years now and slowly but surely we are ridding the place of former smells. I would say they are pretty much gone now.
Fear not, your house will smell good soon!

I've always wondered about that one too. Pretty cool!!!
I know someone who also bought a huge loft in Soho many years ago and paid nothing. It was worth over a few million before she died in 2003. but she hated what changes came to that nabe. She liked it when it was mostly artists and not Old Navys.
But i for one am not jelous of all those rooms to clean.
Bayridge girl, did you check out the green market on Sat? it was great. Apperently everything sold out by about 1:30 so this weekend's will be even bigger.

You know, I see both sides of this as I was born and raised in Staten Island, where every other guy is a fireman or cop who frequented Farrells. I never stepped foot in Farrels until I moved to Park Slope. I moved to Park Slope 10 years ago for the same reason everyone else did. It was a nice nabe with good food, and wine, etc. I like art, music and green markets. So yes, I guess you can call me a "yuppie". (I hate labels) But this is one Yuppie who was happy to discover that Farrells was in the very neighborhood that she moved to. I actually called my old Staten Island friends to brag about how close I lived to Farrels.
Yes I like good food (my mom is a native Italian so I ate well) and good wine. But there aint nothin' better than a tall glass of suds on a hot summer day. So its nice to have Farrells around the block for just that. The rudeness of the staff, I could do without. But being from Staten Island, I know how to give it right back to em'

I will be workinig the Bay Ridge Food Coop table at the 3rd ave festival so stop by and say hello. I think our table will be in the 80s or 90s somewhere. The 3rd ave festival can be a mob scene (no pun intended) but not in a bad way.
If you have children check out the raggamuffin parade this Saturday. It runs along 3rd and the children dress in costumes.
But my favorite Bay Ridge Festival is the Harvest Fair sponsored by the Narrows Botanical Garden (did you even know bay ridge had its own botanical garden?) Check out their website for info: http://www.narrowsbg.org/ They run other events through the year, like outdoor movies in the summer and various concerts.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I used to live in a coop that was a stickler about everyting! It had its positive side and its negative sides. We did a lot of renovations on our unit and needless to say I was always going to the board to get permission. We even had to let people know if we were going to paint. Any little thing we did had to be appoved. Everyone was really nice they just wanted all i's dotted and t's crossed (which I can understand)
Anyway I found that the if ya can't beat em' join em. I would kill with kindness, find out what needs to be done to get your project going. Then you can get it done and move out if you want. It sound like you played by the rules but its seems like something else is going on with the board causing this friction.
We wound up moving out, not because of the board, we were able to find a single family home we could afford. And I have to say its nice to be able to get up one Saturday morning and decide that if you want to paint your bathroom that day, you can go and do it!

Hi Steve,
This is so cool. I live in Bay Ridge also and I don't recognize the block. Is this what your home still looks like, garage and all?
We ordered a picture of our home from DOH from the 1940s and I just love to see how our home used to look back in the day. Thank goodness over the years not much was done to the original limestone building but we do have a few cosmetic things to do to restore it back to the original.
You have a real treasure being it is from the original home owners.

I'm so happy these homes are saved. I walk this block very often to take my kids to the park on Colonial. It so fun to see the homes return to their grandure. It was disapointing to see 2 vics torn down on 74th street last year. The block was irate because the contractor who bought them promised a reno but tore down and built condos.

I'm attemptinig to go tonight to if my kids cooperate. I would love to see a food coop in Bay Ridge just so I don't have to treck to fairway for organic produce.
But I have also learned that gourmet food store is opeining on third and 85th in the next month - not far from you NYBKO1. She's going to carry cheeses, olives, organic items, etc.
You know, the more I talk about Bay Ridge, the more it is sounding like PS.

Have you tried Nouvelle for sushi? One of the chefs used to work at Nobu and the sushi and the rest of the food is fantastic. They also have a mixologist on staff who makes some crazy drinks. Atmosphere is also good, nice outdoor space too.
My brother-in-law who lives in NYC and spends lots o' money on sushi said it was better than most the sushi he's eaten in NYC. (he eats sushi alsmost daily)
Also - Tanoreen is great. Voted best Middle eastern food in NYC this year by Zagats.
BTW - There is a Bay Ridge Food Coop meeting tonight at the Library on 83rd and Ridge at 6:30 on the 2nd floor.

I loved the old people in Bay Ridge. They are walking history books and I find their inability to hold their tounges charming and shocking all at the same time. I find that Brooklyn seniors have more energy and more vigor. For example when I was preggers with my second child, my 85 year old neighbor asked me to come get her if I ever needed anything from the supermarket and she'll go get it for me. She also took in my garbage pails because I couldn't get out to take them in before lunch time.
She also drinks a gin and tonic every day at five. I just love her and hope that when I'm that age I have that kind of energy.

Actually there was a measure of public and private financing offered to the Church about a year ago with arrangements to still allow the parish use part of the church for worship and the rest to be used for community space. The pastor turned it down. So the offers were withdrawn and thats that.

I have to agree that Bay Ridge gets a bad rap when it comes to architecture. I didn't know the grandure of Bay Ridge until I moved here 3 years ago. I used to say that it was the one thing I missed about Park Slope - the architecture. Then when I started walking the nabe and venturing down side streets and dead ends and being pleastantly surprised. Plus the victorians that line some streets are incredible, you just need to know where to look. If I coule afford one I would buy it.
I also would hate to see many of these destroyed for a McCondo. Something needs to be done for sure.

If you want to find all the cool people they sit at the table next to jocks and cheerleaders over by the vending machines. I could pass them a note in homeroom to let them know your interested in them.
How old are the people here? I feel like I had this very conversation in high school.
Check the nabes out for yourself, only you'll know if its cool for you or not.
I have lived in Staten Island, Manhattan, Park Slope and finally Bay Ridge. I found very cool things about each of these nabes. That is the beauty of NY. Each nabe is different and if they were all alike the city would suck. I like that there is a different feel to each of the hoods.
I would never have thought of leaving Park Slope, I owned a very large apartment there, 1/2 a block from Prospect Park. I visited Bay Ridge and my mind was made up and never looked back.
So good luck in your search.

If its schools you are concerned about and don't want to leave an urban environment, Bay Ridge's PS 185 is ranked no 6 in NYC schools. Plus music class is given in every grade. We were pleasantly surprised about that. Were were originally zoned for PS 321 but left for more space and a yard with a veggie garden!
But if you must leave, my sister lives in Verona, NJ one town over from Montclair. So she enjoys the benefits of Montclair without the taxes. Still high compared to here but not as bad as Montclair. Schools are great too.
Good luck in whatever you decide.

Italiana...No, haven't tried Ivy, will now that you recommend - it's nice to have something local for last minute get togethers.
I'm not fond of Little cupcake. Not into that kind of icing. It's very similar to Magnolia that so many people line up for and I don't understand why.
I usually get all my cakes from:
Blackhound, which has the best buttercream icing. (www.blackhound.com) or
Bruno Bakery (http://www.pasticceriabruno.com), the favori cake is my favorite, hazelnut mousse.
Cheesecake from Eileen's http://www.eileenscheesecake.com- (forget juniors) and her chocolate chip cookies are the best.
Cupcakes - I'm addicted to the cupcakes from The Chocolate Room in Park Slope http://www.thechocolateroombrooklyn.com/

Go to the Tiki Bar, 33rd & 4th Ave, bring your own wings from Atomic wings on 9th Street. They may have all you can drink specials, they have that on Sundays $25.00.

Thanks everyone. Does anyone know if Bonnie's Grill shows games other than the Bills? I went in there to get wings a few sundays ago and the place was packed with Bills fans, glued to the TV.

I was hoping for that but have a hard time finding it. Worst comes to worst I'll go to a realtor and pay the extra month.
Thanks guys!
