Recycling an Old Mattress?

I have a 10 year old queen size mattress. Its clean because I kept a water proof mattress cover on it from day one, no bed bugs an actually not in that bad of shape. But we had to get a new one for hubby's bad back.

Does anyone in Brooklyn take these for recycling or does anyone want it?

I'm in Bay Ridge.

Ideas welcome.

Landscaping help for front yards

We have a little bit of a front lawn in the front of our brick limestone building. We need to completely landscape it. Are there any resources out there that can provide us with photos or ideas? We'd like to do this ourselves since it is not huge but it is big enough that we could do something nice with it.

Thanks.

Green Church site to become a school

Exclusive! Green Church to become a school
By Ben Muessig
The Brooklyn Paper

The city is moving towards buying the land that was once home to

Bay Ridge’s beloved, but now-demolished, “Green Church” for a new school, The Brooklyn Paper has learned.

The School Construction Authority is planning to purchase the former site of the emerald-hued Bay Ridge United Methodist Church to construct a kindergarten- through eighth-grade school that could seat between 600 and 700 students, according to Dena Libner, a spokeswoman for Councilman Vince Gentile (D–Bay Ridge).

Representatives from the schools agency declined to “discuss ongoing real-estate” negotiations

Bay Ridge Farmers Market to start this Saturday

Here is the info for the Bay Ridgers who wanted to know. The Green Market will start this Saturday, Oct 4th at the old Key Food Parking lot on 3rd ave and 94th st. It will start at 8:00am and go until 5:00pm There will be produce, meat and fish.

Someone asked before from another nabe how to get a Green Market in their nabe and I think if enough people went to the Comminity board and requested, the would contact the Green Market people to see if they would be interested in having one. Plus I think many people from Bay Ridge contacted the Green Market to express interest and that's how it came to be.

Bay Ridge gets its Green Market!

We just got an email from Vincinte Gentile's office saying that a Press Conference will be held at the old Key Food Parking Lot on Monday 2pm to announce the arrival of the Farmers Market. My guess is that's where it will be held every Satruday.

Bay Ridge Food Coop

FYI for fellow Bay Ridgers: There will be a meetiing tonight, August 5th to discuss the creation of the Bay Ridge Food Coop (BRFC). The meeting be held at the Library on 83rd and Ridge, 2nd floor. Meeting will begin at 6:30.

The more support the faster we will get this off the ground. We need more food options in the nabe.

Other meetings are scheduled for August and Septmeber. I will keep you posted.

Hasidim like Benetton because they are only allowed to wear natural fibers. Since benetton clothing is mostly made of wool, silk and cotton they have alot to choose from.

Yes the Bay Ridge Benetton has been their for years. Its on 86th and 4th ave.

Oh and an important one: Turqua Grill.

Don't forget to visit Grand Sechzuan, which received nods from Village Voice (years best) and The New York Times this past year.

Yes the Gelato is made by the very same guy. And he has a bar set up in the front so you can go and just eat gelato. And the best part? Its still BYO!!!

I think you mean me infromehere. I don't know the couple I just remember the article from three weeks ago or so. I would link it but Brownstoner does not allow links anymore. Simply go back a few weeks to the real estate section of the times. Its a weekly feature called "The Hunt" or maybe it was "Habitats" One of the two.

Posted by: italiana71 at November 17, 2009 6:33 PM in response to Closing Bell: Yellow Hook?

Oh and don't forget Yellow Hook Homes. There was a story about a couple who recently purchased one of these homes in the NYT The Hunt features about three weeks ago. They are on 74th st.

And the first resturaunt to be reviewed should be Piatti on 4th ave and 99th. It might be the best place I've eaten in Bay Ridge so far. And the gelato is probably the best I've had in the states.

Then Petit Oven. Those are my two recs. I could go on but diner is burning on the stove.

And I agree. Yellow Hook food sucks.

This house was the view from my old coop across the street.
It is a lovely block. Quiet and a stone's through from the park. And a short walk to the F train.

Great pic of the Bay Ridge waterfront. I don't take advantage of that promanade often enough. Maybe today I will.

Sort of off the topic- As someone who lived in NY her whole life I find it so weird that the OP called it the accent a "Bensonhurst" accent. In my day everyone in Brooklyn/All nabes had a "Brooklyn" accent. It was never differentiated by nabe.

Just an observation, not trying to make light of the post as I find the behavior of the store clerks sexist.

Maybe this should have gone under the "signs of gentrification" thread that was posted earier this week - The abscense of a Brooklyn accent as a sign of gentrification.

I'm glad someone mentioned the Red Sox hats. They are more prominent in Bay Ridge than Yankees hats these days. But as a Yankees fan I'm lovin' it even more these days - bragging rights coming shortly.

Posted by: italiana71 at November 3, 2009 4:35 PM in response to Closing Bell: Gentrification Indicators

Yes you could go to Scarsdale or somewhere upstate to buy a house like this with more land. But then you wouldn't be in Brooklyn anymore.

Crescent, there is a interior decorator on 3rd ave and 83rd st. I can't remember their name. But I've been inside looking for fabrics and they seemed very professional. I didn't use them for re-upholstery but they may be able to help you as I believe they also do that.

One degree actually could make all the diffence in the world.

Maybe you could meet your tenant half way.

Posted by: italiana71 at October 16, 2009 2:37 PM in response to Temperature in Apt.

The real question you should be asking is where is the theromostat reader?

If the thermostat is in your apt, the heat will come up, warm your apt to 68 degrees and then shut off before it has a chace to warm up the tenant's apt. This was a problem in my former coop. We had to move the thermostat reader into the known coldest apt. (mine) so that all the apts would be heated to a comfortable 68.

Our apt. was on the top floor and even the people in the lower apt would comment how much colder it was when they came to visit. Moving the termostat solved the problem for the most part.

The people on the first floor said they were now roasting but were willing to open windows to keep them and us comfortable. How's that for COOPerative?

We built a tube of wire mesh to put over the drain. You can get it at any hardware store. Make the tube about a foot high and place it so that it is standing upright, where the hallow part of the tube is over the drain. The water can flow but the leaves don't go in. There is one catch. You'll have to clean the leaves off of the tubing every now and again. But we found that the water does drain even though the leaves build up around the mesh, just not as efficiently.

We had the same situation when we lived in Park Slope. Some of these lines are still active!!! So its best to keep the cap on. I would call the gas company anyway and they can give you better info as to whether or not it can de-activated. That's what we did.

I know that ours couldn't be so we just left it as is and never touched it again.

Maybe not so great for you but then again you probably have a bed to sleep in.

Actaully the victim of a fire was ready to take for temporary use until she found a family member with an extra bed and not a floor to sleep on to take her in.

I simply want to recycle it in any, way shape or form possible.

Posted by: italiana71 at September 25, 2009 10:42 AM in response to Recycling an Old Mattress?

Recycling a mattress discusting? I think it more disgusting to just dump it. I'm looking for places that might take them and recycle it some how. I know they exist as the times did peice yesterday about a place upstate that will give you 25 bucks for your old furniture, tear apart and recycle whatever parts they can. I just don't want to drive upstat.

And someone might want to take it to use in a prop for a play.

Posted by: italiana71 at September 25, 2009 10:19 AM in response to Recycling an Old Mattress?

You can actually file comlaint on the DOS webstie. Give the block and the time she usually walks her dog. If you get enough neighbors complain about it they will send an undercover officer to catch her in the act and fine her.

I find the one thing that works in our nabe is to post signs. But I do it in positive maner. Our signs say "keep bay ridge beautiful. Please pick up after your dog." I found them to be more effective then taking a more admonishing tone like "Pick up after your dog!!!"

I'm in Bay Ridge and had brown water on Monday and a little yesterday. I have to say that in all my 38 years of living in NYC this was the brownest I've ever seen. I called 311 about it but they had no info.

I also heard that if construction is going it could also cause brown water.

The Water Board tells you its safe to drink but I'd love to had a glass to whoever decided that and make him drink it!

BTW, the water has now returned to a palatable color.

Reason for not just going out of the burbs... BK orignal said it best Bay Ridge is a far cry from the burbs. I left PS 4 years ago with a choice of moving to Jersey or Bay Ridge. It was no contest. I have a subaway line 2 blocks from my house and can be at BAM or Coney Island within a 1/2 hour. From Jersey it would take me at least an hour by car and then I would have to worry about where to park it.

Funny thing is there is so much to do here in Bay Ridge that I find myself not going back to the old hood, PS, that much.

BOD, I'm pretty sure you're in my neck of the woods, Bay Ridge. There a quite a few shops on 5th and 3rd that do this. There's one on third between 79th and 80th. But I hear the one onf 5th between 77th and 78th is better. I just don't know the names.

I live half a block from the subway line and my house shutters a bit. I noticed it more when I first moved here now I hardly noticed it.

My son's preschool is on the subway line and in the basement so it really shakes. But I assume he'll get used to it.

Posted by: italiana71 at September 11, 2009 11:44 AM in response to Subway Vibration

I also meant to add that I believe there are laws dictating that apts must be 80% carpeted. I know our coop had the same issue and the apt with the children put carpeting down. It helped somewhat.

The guys upstairs should meet you half way.

Just some food for thought.

His behavior sounds like my friend's 5 year old. Its because he is autistic. On the outside he looks like a normal 5 year old. But he is aggressive, he is non stop energy, and tantrums take a long time to control. Its something they grow out of but it could take few more years.

My friend is short and as her son becomes older an older he is getting mor difficult to handle. He is a sweet boy but his autism leaves him unable to control himself.

I understand that it is somewhat controllable but it does take a alont time to settle down.

So maybe that's the issue?

Posted by: italiana71 at September 8, 2009 8:13 AM in response to Running Child Upstairs

The owner of this home is Greek not Italian. So no need to worry about "sleeping with the fishes."

My friends mother in law actually told the owner of this home that it was tacky. I don't think its all that bad. Its not my taste but i've seen much worse.

I do think that if the home was sitting some where along the mediterranean it wouldn't look so out of place.

Oh, one other recommendation. For great Italian try Piattini located on 94th an 4th. It just opened this summer and New Magazine has already given them a nod. The gelato is to die for.

My recs for brownstoner:

For you dog: Narrows Botanical Garden. -The only botanical garden that allows dogs. 72nd and shore rd.

Check out Ovington st between 3rd and Ridge -they are considering historic status for this block.

Some nice homes are tucked away in the 80s between ridge and shore rd like the pp said.

For a great cupcake visit Robicelli's on 3rd and 86th. they finished 2nd at the Williamsburg cupcake contest over the summer.

Also check out two homes that are visible from colonial rd and I think the block is 76th. They sit at the top of two hills and are absolutely glorious. They may be hard to see through the trees at this time of year but in the winter they are completely visibile and amazing.

Also check out 76th between 3rd and ridge. Some interesting stuff there.

I could go on since there's lots of interesting stuff in BR but must go.

Have fun

PS - don't forget to eat at Tanoreen!

I only offered because BOD asked for them in an earlier post in the this thread.

I also said in an earlier post that each nabe has something to offer everyone so she should check out a few nabes before deciding. So traditional - I agree with you.

Posted by: italiana71 at August 31, 2009 9:40 AM in response to From Boston to Brooklyn by 11/1

Traditional mod - I wish everyone was home by 8:00 - 9:00. Have you ever been down third ave at aroun midnight? You don't know bayridge very well. It is full of bars and supper clubs and it is not deserted by 9:00. Hell, even when a group of us moms go out for drinks we still out after 11.

BOD- I'm a mom so I don't know many bars in the area. But I do know that a lot of the resturaunts that the hipster type hang out in:

Le Petite oven
Le Maison du Cous cous
Tanoreen
St. Germain

Well those are the ones my artys farts friends go to anyway.

If you're looking to meet younger people may I suggest joinig the BayRidge Food Coop? I belong to it and there are ove 1000 people singed on- lots of younger people who moved from the known hipper nabes of brooklyn looking for cheaper rent. check out www.foodcoopbayridge.com to sign up for newsletters and events.

Posted by: italiana71 at August 29, 2009 5:27 PM in response to From Boston to Brooklyn by 11/1

Yes. I beleieve it is along 67th and shore rd. Check out www.bayridgebarks.org or .com I can't remember which one it is. They are trying to get funding to make the run bigger.

Posted by: italiana71 at August 29, 2009 5:20 PM in response to Any dog runs in Bay Ridge?

Bay Ridge is not over run with hipsters but these times they are a changin. There was a march up 4th ave to Congressman McMahon's office in support of health care reform. And it was a hipster march indeed.

But what I like about Bay Ridge is that there is a little bit of everyone and everything here. I laugh at friend of mine who said she was leaving Park Slope because she was sick of looking at people who looked like just like her. I still think PS is a great nabe but you know different strokes for different folks.

So make sure you check out a few nabes to see where you would like to be. But I bet no matter which one you choose you will be happy. Every brooklyn neighborhood has something to offer.

Posted by: italiana71 at August 28, 2009 2:37 PM in response to From Boston to Brooklyn by 11/1

People will tell you that Bay Ridge is this and that and the other. And I will tell you that it is all three. Here is a link to an article that I think sums it up nicely:

http://www.nydailynews.com/real_estate/2009/06/26/2009-06-26_bay_ridge_bridges_culture_meet_in_fashion_on_brooklyns_.html

My husband's commute to midtown averages about 50 minutes but we live two blocks from the R train. If you live far from the train it could take a bit longer. Lower Manhattan will take you less time obviously.

We moved here from Park Slope about 4 years ago and love the nabe because of its diversity, resturaunts, and its proximity to many parks. And of course the cheaper real estate.

Good luck in your search. Brooklyn has many great neighborhoods so you may want to check out a few to decide what you like.

Posted by: italiana71 at August 27, 2009 7:50 PM in response to From Boston to Brooklyn by 11/1

You could easily rent a studio in Bay Ridge for that much. I have even heard of some lucky people getting one bedrooms for 1100.

Posted by: italiana71 at August 27, 2009 5:55 PM in response to From Boston to Brooklyn by 11/1

I love how one man's or woman's opinion of a neighborhood (that being the author of the article) gets everyone's panties in a bunch.
