Recommendation needed
I would appreciate any recommendations for someone that can clean up my backyard.Winter storms have left leaves and tree branches. It is bricked but some weeds have grown around the borders as well. Thanks in advance for your suggestions . I guess I need a handyman because I have 2 picnic tables whose tempered glass shattered in pieces for some reason and I need to dismantle the bases and discard them.
Help...need a recommendation
I would appreciate a recommendation for a good masoner to repair the outer foundation of my home.I wonder if anyone had any postive experiences recently that they could share and recommend the person to me. I have had such bad experience with contractors and need someone reliable, honest and that does good work.Your suggestions are appreciated.

Sounds like a problem I had. A plumber came and bled my boiler, then changed the valves and put a piece of wood under each radiator and things were fine after that .He said something about air being trapped. The wood was used to tilt the radiators a bit.

Aside from the businesses opening up on Fulton St from Vanderbilt to Cambridge, this is another improvement on a rather busy but bleek looking stretch of the Hill.

Funny on todays People's Court they had a similar case. I found out that you dont have to give 30 days notice on a month to month but are responsible for the entire months rent if you stay past the day the rent is due.

For those who want good soul food Royal Ribhouse on Halsey off Throop Ave is the place to go. It is still open after 30 something years. There is a line but the wait is worth it. The current owner is a sweetheart and she cooks with alot of love and you can taste it.My family has been going there since the 70's.Unfortunately it is takeout only although I have long suggested a nice sit down spot but I guess you have to get it and git.

That Met supermarket has been selling rotten meat for years. I think they need to replace the coolers for the meat and dairy and get some with the proper cooling temps.I have been living in Clinton Hill years and bought meat once and never again cause it was stink when I got it home to cook. I barely buy cleaners or canned goods. That is the last place I go for anything cause they are ridiculously overpriced as well, especially the white rose products. The only plus is when company drops in unexpectedly at night and you need some soda they are open to get the liters at a slightly better price than the corner bodega.Otherwise I can do without going there and smelling that hamster or cat or wet mop smell that has lingered in that store for years.

Speaking of House Hunters, anyone catch the International show in Italy on the Amalfi Coast? I couldn't believe the couple that chose that shack on the hill with the 750 steps to climb and when they do renovations, which they will definitely have to do, the only way to get the materials up to the house is by donkey. I was stunned as they were in their late 40's or 50's and all I could think about is having to climb those steps when they get older.Yes the view was great but 750 steps with groceries?

Mitchells might not have contemporary decor but one thing I know is that you can eat off their floors. This restaurant is kept very clean. The friendly staff makes it worth waiting for that fresh fried delicious chicken. The food overall is good and they deliver as well. While you are at it throw in a piece of their sliced cakes for dessert and you are good to go.

That is good because according to national grid there is going to be a "long project" of putting in a sewer on Grand Ave tween Gates and Lefferts Aves starting within the next couple of weeks so when they begin to drag like the Fulton St construction that lasted well over a year, I wont have far to go to complain and ask for help.

A bid has done wonders for Myrtle Avenue and is surely needed on that horrible corridor on Fulton from Vanderbilt to Franklin Aves. I dont know what the objections are other then the money the merchants would have to pay but improvements are definitely in order. That stretch has alot of abandoned buildings that could be developed into much needed businesses like a shoe repair, fish store, book store and more and even a yogurt bar or ice cream shop. The streets could use some more garbage cans on the corners and some trees and benches. That would bring more business into the area and benefit those who lost customers during the construction phase.Hope the bid gets going already.

I luv Michael Allen desserts. He is one baker who stays true to the art of baking and uses fresh pure ingredients not margarine or imitation vanilla essence or the other less expensive ingredients. Although I have enjoyed quite a few of his pastries and desserts, glad to report my waistline hasnt suffered much.I dont think another bakery was needed but at least it isnt a shuttered storefront along that ugly corridor.

Sorry to hear of females or males being mugged at anytime of the day or evening. Morality and lawlessness is rampant.Unfortunately this is an age and time where you have to be a little smart wherever you live. Violent crimes are not only occuring in NYC but just check all over the USA and other countries. Satan is walking the earth in all forms. Unless you live in a bubble, doesnt matter if you are from Nebraska or New York, you have to be aware of your surroundings at all times.Between the perverts, sex offenders, deviants, robbers, muggers, rapists, psychopaths you gotta stay prayed up and thank God for keeping you safe and out of harms way.

Choice is opening on Atlantic? Where?Secondly, when is that construction scheduled to end because before you know it winter will be upon us and it will come to a grinding halt. That is impeding the businesses on that stretch. That poor new bakery cant even be seen with the construction equip parked in front of it but the pastries are delish.Tried several including the financier, damn damn good. Hopefully they will stay in business but need our support.I cant wait till the strip from Vandy to Franklin improves more with businesses.

Add Clinton Hill to the list. This guy came around one evening about 2 weeks ago and told my bro in law he needed a copy of the bill to tell me how much money i could save.Said he was from Con Ed. I was in the living room on the parlor floor and heard the talking.I was leery because of some sheister in bedstuy so my antennaes went up. I ran outside like a bat out of hell, demanded to see his id, asked why con ed would send a rep to see a bill when they have them in the office and told him i was going to make a call upon which he scurried off the block never to be seen or heard from again.

About 3 years ago my neighbor had a can of beer in a brown bag walking back to his home from talking to the neighbor immediately next door to his home. Some officers in a marked patrol car were driving down the block, came to a halt, jumped out and walked towards him. I watched as he continued to go into his gate and the officers told him to halt. I watched him pull out his id,then he went inside and got his uniform, yes uniform(army) and brought it out. He then said something to an officer who shook his hand as they laughed and headed back to their car. My neighbor later told me they were going to ticket him for having his can of beer, even though it was in a brown bag but when he told them he was having his last beer before leaving for Iraq they let it slide. He said he went for his uniform to prove to them he wasnt lying and then they started talking about the fact that one officer was in the reserves, etc. They thanked him for his service, wished him well and took off. I guess it is to the discretion of the officer as to whether he is going to uphold this law or not.

Access-A-Ride is under the MTA however they are not paid by them so they earn $7 dollars an hour to start, are subcontracted out to different co .they have to make their pickups and dropoffs within a certain time or they are fined money for being late . They are a crazy outfit whose routing is done by guys in Texas who have no idea about the city and therefore will schedule a pickup in bklyn for 9am with a dropoff for that same pickup in mid manhattan at 9:07am,pickup in manhattan at 9:15 returning to bklyn by 9:27 all the while not being able to use the fdr drive or certain bridges , roads and parkway including the belt pkway. How do I know? I took a job with them as a driver after losing my job after 9-11. I trained for a couple of days and was put out on the road with a lousy route.it took me from bklyn to manhattan back to bklyn to queens back to manhattan back to bklyn, then queens back to bklyn then manhattan...my break was 40 mins but really no break because my pickup after lunch was in queens so after my manhattan dropoff i drove to queens during my "lunch" break because as the dispatcher likes to remind the drivers....we get fined if you are late.after the nerve wrecking radio check every 5 minutes to know where you are and if you are near your destination, after putting in 4 hours and dealing with the craziness, I went back to the depot, turned in my key, picked up my belongings and quit on my first day.The supervisor ran after me begging me to stay. I told him I cant work under those stressful conditions. Oh , I forgot...when you pick someone up, you are to get off the bus and help the passengers on and off. If you dont, they have inspectors who have your route and wait at the pickup or dropoff location to see if you are following procedure and also write you up if your name tag is crooked or your trip sheet isnt filled out properly or your fares werent noted. So when you see them on the fdr or bklyn bridge or belt, they arent suppose to be there but since they are on a time limit they take a chance with the highway patrol giving them breaks when they are caught.when you see them driving like madmen,it is because the people in Texas who dont know bklyn from staten island have scheduled a 5am pickup in bklyn,5:10 dropoff in manhattan, 5:20 pickup in staten island and 5:30 dropoff in manhattan.constant stress, lousy hours.,lousy shifts that start at 3am and lousy pay. and you wonder why they drive like maniacs and are miserable?now you have an idea why. i would never have lasted with that crap.

You may wish to check the size if the vents on the rads that are hissing but not getting hot. If the vents are not large enough they will not bleed the cool air from the system before the floor where the thermostat is located gets warm (because it is usually closer to the boiler) and the thermostat shuts the boiler off.
The vent on the rad in the room where the thermo is located should be a #4. The vents farthest from boiler should be a a higher number or even a D. The higher numbers or D vents vent faster, getting steam to the end run before it heats the room where the thermostat is located.
Also, once the radiators are hot, the vents should not hiss. if they are hissing when the are hot, they are not closing all the way; you are releasing steam or hot air which will cause your boiler to run more than it should have to.
All of this assumes we are talking about steam heat. If you have hot water heat with gurgles in the rads, that is air trapped inside; that must be bled off.
Call me if you have any questions.

A hissing steam vent is broken. A cold radiator with a silent vent usually means that the vent is full of water. Replace the hissing air vents with Gorton or Jacobus C or D for large radiators. For a small radiator, a Hoffman #40 is sufficient.
Posted by: Mansfield at October 31, 2009 12:12 AM in response to Hissing, But No Heat
As has been posted here before, a human sacrifice is necessary to get steam heat working properly.
If no humans are willing to sacrifice themselves, then gamble with all of the conflicting information on this and other boards, including my information below.
Best of luck to you.
Do NOT let a contractor come to you and charge you hundreds and hundreds of dollars to simply change the vents. Do a little googling, and you'll save a fortune.
1. Tilt radiators towards valve by placing a metal object of some sort underneath the other legs (using wood to prop up the radiator will eventually backfire as the wood will compress, and the radiator will be level again, allowing condensate to collect in the radiator. Use metal)
2. Ensure all valves are completely open. Remove the knobs so that no one plays with them thereafter.
3. Clean the boiler.
4. Lower the pressure in the boiler.
5. Insulate those risers with fiberglass.
6. Insulate the basement main pipe that most likely runs the length of the building.
7. Cross fingers.

I had this problem for the last 3 years. (Thanks to construction around me, shocker!) Finally I had a contractor come with the exterminator and they went and found every little hole in my apartment. They pulled out all my appliances and plugged up the gaps around my gas line in my stove. I also had about 12 traps set in a 700 sf apartment, and since my holes have been filled, not one of those traps have had a mouse in them! Good luck!

I heard a huge crashing, thrashing sound last week and rushed into the kitchen to see a mouse leap and soar like a gold medalist in the mousie Olympics over my glue trap and around a corner (while in mid-air) and then run straight at me across the kitchen floor and under my legs as I simultaneously reversed course and leapt straight upward and then onto the bed to escape it, while it ran under the bed and was not seen again.
Three hours of mouse screams from a less skilled relative two days before apparently did nothing to discourage this mouse.
We suffocate them in plastic bags after we catch them in the glue traps.

My neighbor has a cat, who watches as the mice parade around their house. Lol. In addition to steel wool, there is a foam spray that you can spray on top of the wool or in holes to help. Also put some poison in all the corners of your basement. The exterminator has packets of pellets which you can probably get at home depot. Mice find all kinds of ways to get into brownstones and then make holes the size of a penny to get into the apts. Gotta stay on top of things but it could be worse. Could be Rats, like my girl friend who is in a tizzy ever since Ratner started demolishing buildings and the railways by Atlantic Yards. I cant even visit her cause the rats are always around to welcome you...even in the daytime Yikes. They are as big as cats ...some of them.
