a mediocre all the way around. never a destination, more just a coincidental hunger/proximity timing overlap. some places just survive by being at the right place at the right time i guess.

prodigal son, maybe it came out the wrong way. while not the capital, theres a large indian population and seems that you can walk into tons of mom&pops and get excellent cheap food, whereas most of the places ive been to in manhattan/bklyn were weak. perhaps im just going to the wrong places (except jackson hts and a few on lex.), but still personal experience is that theres a greater ratio of good to bad places in socal than around here. as you were.

11217, its objective observation, the 'wrongness' is simply your own personal reaction. faithful asked why i thought the kids were from the projects. in that neighborhood, a block away from the projects, dressed in baggies and smashing things, its a reasonable deduction to make.
curious as to your sensitivities.
Posted by: goldie at October 15, 2008 4:15 PM in response to House of the Day: 18 St. Marks Place
faithful, regarding the kids, they were about 8 black kids walking north about a block from the projects. odds would be they were more likely from there than elsewhere. just writing this brought flashbacks of other incidences of kids throwing bottles in front of passing cars (mine being one). sure there are worse neighborhoods, but dealing with this stuff a few times in just one year was enough.
in this market, a buyer with $1.2MM should not be dealing with this since that area wont change.
Posted by: goldie at October 15, 2008 3:41 PM in response to House of the Day: 18 St. Marks Place
horrible area. i used to live on pacific and recall hearing gunfire, to read the next day of a guy pulling a gun on police, have been harrassed by packs of kids from the projects while walking, have seen kids walking down the street kicking trashcans over and breaking bottles, throwing bottles at cars, and get to hear radios blasting at odd hours. all within my short year of living near there. serious buyer-beware flag here.

dittoburg, agree. $805/sq.ft. for 12th st. sounds steep, and a 1000sq.ft. 2bd. duplex sounds like it could feel like a small place, versus spread out (personally anything under 1000sq ft or below doesnt sound like a 2bdrm to me. the outdoor space is a plus, though not quite garden size if its , say, 15'x20'. At this price my guess is they closed, versus just entered into contract (I hope). But I do really hope they enjoy the place.

was at the place tonight, chatting with two of the team there, a husband and wife team. from the brief chat they seem quite nice and not stereotypical brokers. there was zero sell, i actually had to push them to tell me bout what they do, the place, etc. its mainly all rentals (good call in this climate), and a nicely designed place compared to the other r.e. joints on 7th.

class action suits against the city? your insane. the problem with everyone is a lack of responsibility. i see it on both sides. as polemicist said there are just foolish drivers, but i see so many either bold or stupid bikers who ride like warriors and expect that every driver is going to see them.
im a biker, but a driver too (daily from bklyn to jersey) and realize how difficult it is to pay attention to all the madness going on with traffic and other drivers, which means its all that much harder to see bikers suddenly darting in and out of traffic. and when its a dark, bright, or rainy day? forget it.

Sam's is a WalMart owned club chain, BJ's is unrelated to either, all are fiercely competetive with the other (though overlap in members is small, ~11%).
BJ's is a good idea for the rest of us who dont have to live in Red Hook. The place seemed to have potential, but not if it starts becoming a home for big box stores.

thought it was very run of mill for soul food. once was enough given the zero ambience or service, and food was about right for the price (neither of which were great).
Polemicist,
First, I am indeed a member. Second, I'm not challenging the scoffing at "fostering community" explanation since I think that's b.s.. I took issue with the use of "social trap". Any definition of the concept (and they vary slightly) says that it's either when people act in their own self-interest and greed and distrust of eachother, as well as a situation where the group causes (long-term) harm by acting out of their short-term self-interest.
Nothing about this concept applies to the co-op. Curious as to your explanation. greed? self-interest? harm?

First, I'm a he not a she, no worries. I hear your argument, and if it works for you, great. But I live a block away and there's the convenience aspect. Second, my shift is on a Saturday morning, I'm not forgoing any income earning opportunity. The trade-off in value is only whether I sleep in or not.
I hope more people don't join, its too successful already (i.e. too crowded). Many people, those with MBA's and PhD's and those w/o have come to the educated conclusion that yes, the 2.5hrs a month is indeed worth it for the price/quality/convenience.

labor is the greatest overhead cost of a market, reducing that key component allows them to pass on the savings. its something that haters like polemicist dont understand.
as for requiring 2 work shifts make-up for missing 1, it makes sense as well. fort greene will soon be changing their rules when everyone realizes there's no repercussion if they just decide to miss their shift and work when its convenient for them. schedules/staffing will be completely screwed.
i happily work and deal with the quirks of the co-op members/politics to pay an 11% margin vs. 35%-55% at average grocery stores.

i live in park slope now, but visit bay ridge often as friends live there, and i often think of moving there. "cool" is such a vague term, but i personally really like bay ridge for its diversity of food, more laid back pace, views of the water, diversity of housing stock, and actually being able to chat with people who arent overly stressed. the train ride really isnt all that bad, but i mainly hang out in the lower end of manhattan, not uws or ues.

only tried yogo once and that was enough. no redeeming qualities in my opinion unless you're just in it for caloric purposes. flavor seemed synthetic industrial, and not like a real frozen yogurt, too icy. i still may give it another chance since it was near their opening date...maybe theyve worked the kinks out.

anyone remember TJ's on the W.Coast before it went mostly private label and owned (i believe) by Aldis? Nostalgic for that great market of small brands, constant rotation of new discoveries. Now it just feels bland and predictable. *sigh*

are people sure they're in CH when referring to all the great restaurants and amenities, or FG? i've looked for places in CH, so have no hate towards it, but it's far from a great neighborhood full 'o amenities/restaurants/etc.
as for the G train, for what its worth: http://www.hopstop.com/?action=rate

great new series as its nice to get an expert's view of bklyn architecture. however, are places like this dry dock open to the public? its one thing to read about such nifty places, but a downer if the public can't actually experience it for themselves.
looking forward to more!

have only had brunch there and found it fine, nothing special and not worth the cost. i will be going back for dinner as a person related to the restaurant told me that even he would recommend against the brunch, but that the dinner is wonderful and really their claim to fame.
and people criticized the waterfalls?! at least an 8 year old couldnt construct the falls.
