Sidwalk Repair
Our co-op's insurance company is requiring that we make some repairs to the sidewalk in front of our building. Anybody have a guy who does concrete work?
Thanks!

Affordable Interior Design
A while back I remember reading something about an interior design service that would come into your place and help you rework a room (mostly) using materials/furniture you already have, but I can't find any info about it...I've got a back room facing a brick wall that I've given up trying to make useful on my own, but I don't want to hire a full blown design firm.
Does anybody have any contacts that provide this type of service for the spacially impaired?

Concur on the staying far far away from Garfield Kitchen and Baths; dealing with them was a nightmare. They took our money, never ordered anything, lied to us about delivery dates, screwed up basically everything they did manage to deliver, and drove my contractor insane. At one point he called them and threatened to go down to the showroom and knock heads. I still have the occasional nightmare about that renovation project.

Congrats! Can you provide some more detail on the appeal process?

We have an 18" Miele that is quiet and works as well as any other dishwasher I've had. Bosch makes some quiet, quality models as well.
You can't clean much in the way of pots and pans in a dishwasher this size, but we always did those by hand anyway.

Thanks all! senatorstreet, daveinbedstuy, the space to the right of the frig is a wall with a load-bearing lolly column inside it. So that had to stay.
townhouser, please clarify. yes, the dw when open is right behind you if you are at the sink, but you would be standing in about 12" space, although it might be possible to just turn around and load the dw (with the risk of falling into it, if you lost your balance :-)
I looked at a few 18" dws at the pc richards on the uws yesterday. They looked so dinky like toys, although they are indeed 2/3 the size of the regular ones. I measured them and their racks.
vivki vale, did you fit pots and pans in them easily?
Matter of fact, the issue of resale is in the back of my mind when thinking about this, all the time. If this were my house (It IS my house), I would go with the 18". But, then it's never entirely your house is it, unless you plan to live there forever.

I'll second Vicki's comment-- I have an 18" with a top tray for cutlery. We use it every time we cook dinner, rather than twice a week like when we had a full sized one. No complaints, though.

I have an 18 inch Meile (Miele?). It's perfect for two people. Any bigger and it would take too long to fill up and would start to get stinky. We run it about every other day. Agree with others -- the top rack for silverware is great. Also very quiet. It's a great compromise for a small kitchen, as we're happy to have the extra cabinet space made possible by a narrow machine.

Thanks all!
Just decided to go with the 24" after all that. Guess I just didn't have the balls :-) I just did not want to hear any comments from visitors, future realtors or potential buyers about: 'Oh, an 18" dishwasher? Are those big enough? What do you do if you have people over?' All that for 6". Also did not want a corner sink.
It is my home, but then it is also an investment and it would be difficult to undo once an 18" went in. There was also the issue of the 18" being an endrun and the problem with supporting the countertop without a cabinet at the other side of the DW.
But, thanks again. Maybe in my next reno!

So far I've only gotten through the DoF. Though I also filed an appeal with the Tax Commission, they're not supposed to conduct hearings until September.
Please note that there are deadlines. I think is September for the RPIE for the previous year and it's March 1 for multifamily, commercial condos, and commercial or industrial. You supposed to make the Spetember deadline to be eligible for the March one, but I think they have a little flexibility.
Ingeneral here's the process:
1. Make sure you've filed a Real Property Income and Expense (RPIE) form.
2. Fill out the DoF Request for Review of Property Tax Assessment. It's under Forms and Pulications on the DoF website if this link doesn't work or it's not for you property type. I filled out this one and the one for another property type becuase there were better fields on that one pertaining to the size and condition of the property.
http://www.nyc.gov/html/dof/html/pdf/request_for_review_property.pdf
3. Then fill out the forms for the tax commission. Read the info on your tax notice to determine your property type.

Hope this helps.

Very good for you. Homeowners are not suppose to pay taxes it is those loosers who rent that have to bear the whole burden of the city's high class spending. The homeowners are not even suppose to volenteer that is a renters duty.

That sounds about right. I stopped in at Garfield and asked about a toilet, and the two guys right away started arguing heatedly between themselves about who sold the last one and whether the one in the showroom was basically the same. They went at each other for, like, a full two minutes. Very awkward.
But I was hoping that there'd be some obvious place to look, a Drimmer's for sinks.

Try Home and Stone on Coney Island Avenue. Nice stuff, competitive pricing, and great customer service.

I bought a lot of my fixtures (sinks, designer faucets, shower body) at discount at a shop called Deco Ware on McDonald Avenue. There are a few similar stores out there by the F train stop.

Brooklynista! Thanks for the recommendation. Just came back from Home and Stone. Excellent. Got everything we needed, very friendly saleswoman, no condescension. Great. (Of course, I reserve the right to complain if my stuff doesn't come in on time....)

I will send her a note. These people nearly drove me and my contractor insane....
