Waterfalls were privately funded, the Pope is the Pope (for Christ's sake, pun intended) and ... okay, the city has given away hundreds of millions in subsidies to developers.

Well, some of the offenders will need to 'go freely' -- many of them go to the office sole to provide a urine sample under supervision. (Sorry, couldn't help myself. Must of watched too many Flomax commercials during last night's All Star Game.)

I don't disagree with anything you wrote, bxgrl; I was just pointing out that I have not seen any indication that anyone is prepared to allocate millions of dollars to restore/re-build some or all of Admiral's Row. The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corp. cannot afford to fix up the buildings, the income stream from the redeveloped properties won't sustain financing, Councilwoman James does not have that kind of discretionary funding.... Maybe the mayor will find the money, or maybe not.

bxgrl, people under supervised release do not have access to "stairwells, maintenance areas, etc." The areas that offenders have access to are very limited and sequential, with locked doors separating each area.

bxgrl, the offenders visiting the probation office will (if the move goes forward) enter through an entrance that serves them and them alone.

"If the economics are resolved, we can move forward on preserving some of these buildings...." That's a mighty big "if." Of course, if the preservationists get the upper hand in this fight, and they have been gaining strength for months, the mayor might find the money needed to keep the project from collapsing completely. Or not; real potential for a pyrrhic victory here.
Also, whenever people discuss what should be built at the corner of Flushing and Navy, some of the comments are, 'we can both save Admiral's Row and build a supermarket.' Not mentioned is the other building planned for the site. Since I have not read any comments stating, 'we can have all three uses,' I assume that people either have forgotten or don't know about the new industrial building or are expressing a preference for preserving Admiral's Row.

All of the above is spot on. Generally, when LPC staff tell an applicant that they must present to the commission, they tell you why. You need to know that. You also need to know what the objection is to your design.
Also, as a general rule, when LPC staff tell an applicant that they must present to the commission, they give the applicant the hearing date and tell them to contact the local community board. You and staff are not communicating well, and I cannot tell from here why that is.
hakonechloa's advice is probably sound: call the community board for assistance. After all, you're gonna have to call them at some point anyway.

sorry f4f, the project cost $15M; the amount of money coming from NYSCA and the Department of Cultural Affairs was relatively minor. And kingstonlounge, the pope is the leader of a major religion worshiped by hundreds of thousands of people in the New York metropolitan region, so what you (or I) think of him doesn't really mean a whole lot.
