Verdant Gardens Design
I'm thinking of hiring a garden designer to remake our scrubby brownstone garden. Has anyone here worked with the company Verdant Gardens Design? They have some great-looking modern gardens on their website.
Garden Designer in NYT
I'd like to contact the garden designer featured in the Times home section last week--Susan Welti. Strangely, she has no website or current contact info online. Has anyone out there worked with her and know how to reach her?

Kolbe Windows
I'm interested in replacing our old, leaky, rotting windows with Kolbe wood windows. (I've tried repairing and weatherproofing, as well as exterior storms, to no great effect.)
I'm in a landmark district, so I need to install them to Landmark Commission standards.
I got an estimate from Windows We Are for Kolbe wood "sash replacement kits," but I'm thinking that is not what I want. Don't the replacement kits mean that I lose some area of glass, because they are installed on top of the existing frame or something? Should I be looking for a "brick-to-brick" installation? If anyone installed Kolbe windows and can give some guidance I'd be most grateful.

Slate Supplier/Fabricator?
Anyone know a good an not too expensive place to get a piece of slate cut for the hearth space in front of a fireplace?
Thanks

donating salvage items
I've heard there are a few places in town where you can donate architectural salvage items--nonprofit organizations that then sell the items and use the profits for good causes. Any info?
Thanks
seeking window washer
Can anyone recommend a good window washer at a reasonable price? All these brownstone windows can really add up...
Thanks

metal worker to make table base
I'm looking for someone to make a table base out of iron or steel, a simple squared U shape (i.e. three sides of a square, with the bottom side resting on the floor). Anyone know of someone who can do this for me? Thanks.

For sale: 1890s wood mantel
I'm looking to sell this mantel, with all original tile and metal cover.
I've seen wood mantels (without tile or cover) for $2500 and up at architectural salvage places. I'm asking $1500.
I can send more photos if you are interested. Email me at tullis at nyc dot rr dot com.

seeking someone to remove mantel
Does anyone know of a person who can carefully remove a wood and tile mantel from my house?
I know it's sacrilege, but I don't care for the style and I'd rather it be enjoyed by someone who likes this sort of thing.

installing a flat-screen TV
I wanted to install a flat-screen TV on the chimney wall (brest?) where the old gas fireplace used to be, now just an empty space. I thought it was the perfect space since the unused chimney provides a space to run the wiring invisibly. (I'd then have a carpenter make a little shelf thing in the fireplace opening for the cable box and stuff.) The electrician I've used in the past says it can't be done. I didn't quite understand the reason (I'm sort of a dolt when it comes to such things) but I thought I'd get a second opinion, as there really is no other space in the room where it can go. Anyone know if I can do that, and/or have a recommendation of another electrician to advise me? Thanks

Thanks so much for the offer of photos. Turns out my neighbors down the block installed Kolbe replacements recently, so I am going to go over there to check them out.
And thanks for the recommendation of Heights Historic Windows--I made an appointment with Pat Murtaugh next week.

Highly recommend Atlantis in Red Hook.
They recovered a vintage daybed for me, remade the spring support with fabric webbing and refinished the dull wood for no extra charge. Beatrice is really nice, too.

I used to work at The Nation magazine, where bright and responsible and terribly under-rpaid college-age interns were often living in squalor in order to afford to stay in NYC. We often had interns house-sit for us, and they were very grateful for a decent place to live for a while. We always had good experiences with them--they were tidy, took good care of our vats, and left the place clean. You can give The Nation a call and ask for the internship coordinator and let them know you are looking for someone.

Park Slope Glass did a decent job for me about 11 years ago when I installed storms. But a year ago or so I had them give me an estimate for window replacement and the guy was a complete lunatic. I would totally steer clear of them.

Thanks to those who offered words of support on removing the mantel! To those who think I'm crazy: I was strongly preservationist when I bought this house but living here for 12 years has changed my attitude a bit. I no longer feel enslaved to the tastes of the people who lived here over a hundred years ago. The place has SO much detail, it looks like a Victorian bordello. And it was dark and rather grim. So I've painted some woodwork (gasp!), which has made it so much more cheerful, and am now editing some of the architectural details. (For one thing, who has time to DUST all that stuff? I don't have servants like my predecessors in this house must have.) I have to live here, and if it doesn't suit me, I don't feel like I have to keep it.
Anyway--
To theklahy and the others who are interested in taking the mantel: I'm very happy to pass it along, but I was hoping to sell it for something (to pay in part for having Manny LaSalle convert the fireplace to a wood-burning one). I don't know how to contact you directly--but I can be reached at tullis at nyc dot rr dot com.
Donatella--Thanks for the suggestion about Manny--maybe he'd be willing to do a deal on the mantel and fireplace work!
Thanks for the suggestion about Manny taking it

Thanks for your thoughts. I hadn't thought about the fire hazard point, though that's not the objection the electrician made, interestingly.

Thanks so much for the recommendations.
Will start calling folks right away.

Thanks for those suggestions--I'll check those stores and also look into having the holes simply filled--I agree that would probably be the best looking.

don't drill holes or put electric conduit in your chimney, it just isn't kosher. build a false wall about an inch in front of the real wall out of sheetrock and run the wires behind that, much simpler, much cleaner and you don't stick things in your chimney that do not belong there.
it can also be undone in a jiffy

Try Interior Alterations -- 718-832-1182 They're a little pricey but you can't beat quality of windows and workmanship.

ivan: IA has a great reputation as a general contractor, but said they would not do a job as small as replacing a few storm windows: they only do large scale house renovations.

It was a pleasure to work with Jay at New Image Glass and Windows. He installed one custom made triple track storm window with warrantee, refinished the sills and caulked all my other windows for me yesterday. He's calm, careful, respectful polite and efficient and does a thoroughly good job as well as cleaning and taking away all the debris . He's at 347-408-5602

frabjousday,
I just looked up Atlantis ans they seem great. I have a Knoll chair (not really vintage as it is from the 80's)that needs recovering. Were they helpful in picking out/supplying fabric? Also, do you mind telling me the final price of your job?
Thanks.
