I found a jar of formaldehide with a human brain in it. The jar was marked "Hitler".

Please, the correct term is "Injuns". Thank You.

Boerum Hill was very shady in the 70's. Pacific and Dean were lined with parked 18 wheelers and truckers being serviced by the local prostitutes. God forbid you were an absentee landlord your brownstone foyer would be used as a makeshift bed.

Posted by: eastriver at October 5, 2009 9:52 AM in response to Boerum Hill: In a Nutshell

The whole block of Dean between 3rd and 4th is experiencing an extreme makeover.

These comments drive me nuts.

If you truly fall in love with Brooklyn... and your children love their hometown... and their children also love their hometown... and all of a sudden Brooklyn truly becomes your hometown... when you want a bigger home, a yard, a driveway, AND to be close to your family you end up venturing further out into "undiscovered by you" areas of Brooklyn. Westchester is not an option for multi generational Brooklynites.

Same goes for multi generational Manhattanites. Nothing wrong with wanting to stay close to grandma in your hometown.

We are city folk AND we are townies.... for life.

All of a sudden Norman is a fan of Gehry? Where have you been the past few years? I think these people are realizing they have done more harm than good and are trying to back down and shift the blame.

Posted by: eastriver at June 11, 2009 10:09 AM in response to Ratner Cans Gehry For Good

Please. The only sham was delaying the project in court for so long that its no longer affordable as originally planned. No Gehry for us. Boo Hiss.

Posted by: eastriver at June 11, 2009 9:43 AM in response to Ratner Cans Gehry For Good

I will never be able to look at the Williamsburg Bank building without thinking we almost had a Gehry there. Thanks a million anti-AY groups!

Posted by: eastriver at June 9, 2009 2:30 PM in response to Ouroussoff, Tell Us How You Really Feel

I don't buy the whole bait and switch argument one bit. I've said it here before and I still believe the blame falls on the anti-AY groups for stalling the the project. We could have had world class destination architecture in the hub of Brooklyn and instead we will end up with some generic crap that belongs in the mid-west designed by some generic bozos in the mid-west. It truly pisses me off. "AY will result in instant gentrification!!!" Are you kidding me? You moving into the borough results in instant gentrification. What a sham.

Posted by: eastriver at June 9, 2009 11:21 AM in response to Ouroussoff, Tell Us How You Really Feel

What a disappointment that would be. Thanks a million anti-AY groups. Now instead of world class destination architecture we will end up with a generic development designed by a firm in the mid-west. What a shame.

Duh. So many transplants lack the most basic of street smarts. Living across the street from any public housing will increase your chances of being the victim of a crime. I dont care if the projects are in Bushwick, the Upper West Side, or even Staten Island for that matter. It only will get worse in an economic downturn. Stick around and see for yourself.

3rd Avenue in Boerum Hill used to be called Powers Avenue. I believe it was Powers until it hit expressway. Anyone have any evidence of this? I couldn't find anything on it on Brooklyn Revealed.

Gang explanation? Drugs sold here? Sheesh. Brooklyn kids are obsessed with sneaker culture. Always have been. Sneakers say so much about who they are. When its time to retire a pair after a long summer of running around the streets, tying them together and landing them on the lines is a way to keep them "alive" as opposed to tossing them in the trash. Its also fun when all the kids on block cheer on the kid tossing them up onto the lines.

p.s. please don't throw your hipster sneakers up onto the lines. Brooklyn kids know them as "rejects"

bkny, for a old house that big with such great detail, on such a huge lot, yes i must say cheap... unless it is within a drug warzone. Thats basically my question. What is this neighborhood like? If it is a safe area, I cant understand why people would move to the suburbs. Brooklyn, name it, we got it.

Wow. All the homes in Ditmas are so huge!!! From the pictures its like the Hamptons in the City. These homes seem so detailed and beautiful. Why are they priced so relatively low? Is Ditmas an unsafe neighborhood??? Is it under serviced by Mass Transit? Who cares these houses seem like like you could fit 5 cars in the driveway. What gives?

It is not hype. Best Pizza ever. Ever. I mean ever. The store is in the middle of nowhere. Nowhere. I mean nowhere. I remember watching the soup Nazi episode on Seinfeld and wondering if the character was based on Dom. He is the nicest man, but he truly is no nonsense. Dont even think of calling in your order. He will start when you get there and thats it. Dont like it? Leave. I once saw someone ask for grated cheese for his slice. Dom looked him in the eyes, shook his head, grabbed a chunk of Parmigiano Reggiano and smashed it with his fist, crumbled it onto a paper plate and handed it to the happy customer. It must have been at least 5 bucks worth of Reggiano. It was Dom's way of saying "Why would you mess with perfection?". Places like this are a rarity these days. Great food for poor people. Go now.

Boerum Hill has been getting the short end of the stick from the city for years. What a waste.

Sometimes the knobs on the radiator break off and you can no longer manually adjust the amount of steam entering your apartment. Its a simple solution that your landlord will thank you for bringing to his atttention.

Hope this helps. Had the same problem over a decade ago. I used to leave my windows open in the winter until I asked the super of the building to check it out.

Hey WT community,

Think about what would happen if a true old school crime wave hits given the state of the economy. Think about the Koch or Dinkins days (remember walking the streets during those days?). The author of this article will suddenly wonder why she paid Greenwich prices for her home but didn't get the safety that should come along with prices (her real estate agent didn' t mention that part). Don't get too upset about that article and the outward contempt she feels for the working class (inward if its non-white working class). She probably wont be here long.

Oh come on Biff. I feel for the kid who was stabbed and for his family. I really do, but don't you find the comment "..yet another issue we should all be aware of" remotely funnny? I mean seriously people welcome to Brooklyn. Our public school kids are out control. Street crime is a fact of life. This isn't a new issue. How can you not be aware of this?

btw, calling someone glib post the Cruise/Lauer interview takes guts. Maybe you have some Brooklyn in ya.

Bay Ridge is huge. There are several mini-neighborhoods within the neighborhood. There are sections of the neighborhood where homes take up half a city block and the only noise you will hear is foghorns in the Harbor. There are sections where you wont see a single store sign in English. Check it out for yourself and walk around.

New Yorkers live in Bay Ridge. Generation upon generation of natives. Looking for the cool dude from your high school in Minnesota? He lives in Park Slope.

Sorry. It's kind of late in game/day to bother commenting (no?)...

We found the old style beer cans like we used to have (pre-pulltab cans) but other than that, dust...LOTS and LOTS of dust (gritty, mortary dust...sooty...yucky). Dress accordingly and wear a good mask!

I was always hoping we'd find some lost gold coins or the like. Maybe the contractors' guys did over the years but never told us.
