Fulton Street BID
Anyone know the latest? Thought there should be some inkling of improvement by now. Last I heard was in June when some stores were refusing to pay and threatening mutiny?

New York Times article from 1993
Just came across this online ...
"The end of the real-estate boom has created some of the same problems in Clinton Hill as it has in the rest of the city, and residents who bought when the market was at its highest and whose houses or co-op apartments have decreased in value often find it difficult to sell. But Ms. Golde said there were still opportunities for first-time buyers and young families.
Housing prices vary greatly in the neighborhood, she said, changing block by block and building by building. A "modest" house or a larger house requiring much renovation might cost about $250,000, she said; one of mansion quality "could go for under $700,000, though you could certainly spend a lot more."
Co-op prices also vary, she said, but a "nice three-bedroom" might be available for under $200,000. The same is true for rentals, which, she said, "are very strong now, in Clinton Hill and all over the city; a two-bedroom apartment could easily go for $1,000." Less expensive two-bedrooms are available, but those probably have not been renovated."

Modern Cabinet Pulls for sale
These are brand new stainless steel cabinet handles- 32 of them - used for only a few weeks before i changed them. I think they are Ciesse (Italian brand) but only the cabinets are labeled - the hardware doesn't have any info. The spread for the holes is 5 inches (128mm). All screws included. I have no idea what the retail price would be but as the new ones cost $8 each, I'm asking $5 each or $130 for all of them.

Speaking of trees- Anyone know what's coming (or not) in the pits on Fulton between Clinton and Cambridge (or thereabouts)? When they redid the sidewalks they included the tree pits but alas, no trees.

Don't laugh but i just got a perfect dining table, chairs and sideboard from Overstock.com. I had been looking for months for the price, style and size I needed and wanted to see a huge selection so went online. Couldnt believe I spent thousands based on just a photo, but it worked out well - i love it and the delivery was easy.

Sounds like office space for NYCHA, not housing.

If WF is still talking about opening at this location, then what's the deal with 470 Vanderbilt (@Fulton)? That location is so much more centrally located and near all the Atlantic/Pacific subways whereas the Gowanus location is going to compete with Fairway for all those who have access to a car.

these are gorgeous. Why dont we see developers doing stuff like this regularly? Instead it's white laminate cabinets and concrete countertops in mirrored glass high rises that languish on the market!? this is stylish, bright, charming and I'd be surprised if they didnt sell quickly even in this market.
although i think the distance to the major subway lines would have been a deal breaker for me, and is the only major drawback that i can see, I can't say I'm not envious of this.

What kind of birds are we talking about here? I saw a dead pigeon on Washington/Gates yesterday and thought it was odd as it made me realize that in my 16 years of liviing in NYC i had never seen a dead pigeon.

The idea that “a person of color” would be snubbed in FG/CH is ludicrous. One of the best things about the nabe is how well integrated it is between people of all races and socio-econ status'. And as someone accurately pointed out earlier (Miss Priss?) and you don’t move to this area if you’re afraid of blacks, hispanics or any other race/ethnicity. And I don’t dig this limousine liberal crapola about gentrification being a bad thing either. It’s ludicrous that Rosie somehow still identifies as a "homegirl" when she's living in a multi-million dollar brownstone on one of the best blocks in Ft Greene- so her home is not contributing to gentrification? Explica me mucho!?

here's what is says about sidewalks on the DDC site's notice about the Fulton project:
Sidewalk Violation Notices
Prior to sidewalk installation, the NYC Department of Transportation will inspect your sidewalk. If a violation exists, a sidewalk violation
notice will be issued to you. Included with this violation notice will be a Preliminary Inspection Report (PIR) indicating the square
footage you will be assessed for. Your sidewalk will be installed in no less than 45 days. During this 45-day period, you may request a
reinspection by DOT that may result in a revised PIR. When the sidewalk is installed DDC will notify the NYC Department of Finance to
assess you for the work completed in accordance with the final PIR. For more details, please contact our Community Construction
Liaison or visit the NYC DOT website at www.nyc.gov/dot.
So does this mean that the bldg owners pay for sidewalks>? and that they can really replace that huge stretch of sidewalk in 45 days?

OK-Is Mr. Perris saying that ALL the crummy looking sidewalk patches - which seem to run all the way from Waverly to Grand on the north side of Fulton- are going to be replaced? I dont want to push my luck and plus people around here dont seem to bother anyway but how about some post-war garbage cans too?

As a new (2 weeks ago) resident in this area who would like to feel comfortable walking down the street using my Ipod/Iphone I cant say this doesn't concern me, however I dont want to come to a premature conclusion since i dont have comparable data for other neighborhoods in NYC. Im curious how Manhattan ‘hoods --UES & UWS for instancethat are generally considered safe --stack up. In looking at SpotCrime.com, it shows very little crime for Brooklyn and a ton for Manhattan but the data seems spotty and therefore useless. Some of my Manhattan friends have cited crime as a drawback to living in Brooklyn but i wonder if there’s any truth to that. Even if we have stats for UWS/UES it would be hard to correlate chance of an incident unless you factored in population since those areas are so much denser than FG/CH. Anyone know have such info?

What's the deal with "The Carter." Also can someone fill us in on the "soup kitchen" next door? I've been eyeing it for a year and dont see an ounce of soup.

I saw these over a year ago. Not bad but like so many of these places that try to be ultra-modern, not too practical. Most are duplexes and the space up top was chopped up in odd configurations, had low ceilings and was reached by an impossibly steep and narrow staircase.
Also directly across from a school and half a block away from some really unattractive gray public-housing-looking type development. I'm impressed they managed to sell 6 out of the 8.

If the 10th floor unit - which im sure had a great view - went for 785K i dont see where the 850K price comes from on this? Granted, this is a 3 bed room but the lower floor and current climate makes me think 750-800K would be reasonable. It's a very nice bldg and does have good services.

I am thinking of buying in this building but offering very, very low. i dont understand the comments about the neighborhood not being nice. Walked 5 blocks deep in all directions and seemed gorgeous and super convenient to so many subways, shopping etc. directly south gets a tad sketchy but nothing terrible. I agree the architecture is out of the sync with teh neighborhood but nothing like some of the monstrousities in Williamsburg and elsewhere. It's just neither here nor there but the inside is nice and seems solidly built.Other pros are low common charges, outdoor space, gym, storage space, etc. Curious to talk to others who currently live here.

i second sterling place -- it's my favorite shop on atlantic. they also have a location on 7th ave in south slope if i remember correctly, but i haven't been there.
housing works on montague has also been amazing for us... we found the most gorgeous old pine farm table for $200 and have seen so many treasures there.
haystack on clinton around joralemon is a beautiful little shop. they have the sweetest small loveseat in the window that i wish i could find a place for -- i've been staring at it for months. they have some upholstered pieces, side tables, etc. not a big store but worth a look if you're in the area.
for decorative accessories (not furniture, i know, but related) try abitare on henry between atlantic and state. nice little shop.

Rico on Atlantic is good for modern. They carry Maria Yee and some other interesting lines including DeLaEspada's lower priced line. Moon River Chattel in W'burg always has fun stuff -- their style is recycled/antique/industrial. Future Perfect has great decorative items but not much real furniture (at least not at real-world prices). Fabrica on Vanderbilt has a good but small selection of mid-century modern. Of the chains, I like CB2 best. And there are infact deals to be had on 1stDibs -- easy to search by price and location. Horseman on Atlantic is a little scarey -- don't bring bed bugs home is all I'll say!

I live in Stoneham and I have seen two baby birds dead in the same week. I think it is alarming. I let the police know but they say there is nothing to be alarmed. I know that in some countries when you see dead bird you have to notify the health board so that they can examine to see if it is not a epidemic that is spreading.

I think FInd is great as well. Worth noting is that they were 20% off everything last month and yesterday it was 30% off. So while the original prices didn't keep them on our short list, now we're reconsidering some things.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Baxter & Liebchen [http://www.baxterliebchen.com]in DUMBO. Great mid-century [Danish primarily] furniture at not exactly cheap but reasonable prices. Unfortunately, the ABC Carpet store [also in DUMBO] is defunct!! There's a DWR on Montague in the Heights though I don't quite know "who's reach the designs are within"!! Haven't been on Atlantic for awhile but there "used to be" quite a few antique shops btwn 4th Ave. & Court Street. There's IKEA, of course. Also worth a mention are the Ft. Greene flea market @ Lafayette & Vanderbilt [on Saturdays] and the Brooklyn Flea Market under the Brooklyn Bridge [on Sundays].

Yllebdael said: "Nova Zembla sucks. Bought a custom made piece from them. It was delivered damaged. A big chunk came out from one of the legs. The owner would not give a discount. He's a stupid man. Zero idea how to treat customers and a complete moron. Buyer beware."
I went to Nova Zembla for the first time as a result of this thread and am compelled to offset this. We saw great stuff, bought several right then and there, special ordered another (with legs moved to accommodate our vents) and had a first class experience. Delivery (that day) was inexpensive, especially considering it was three large HEAVY rosewood pieces up three flights, and done with extreme care and professionalism. Everything is high quality but not expensive. We are thrilled to have been able to get so much stuff made for urban spaces rather than suburban houses. We spent an inordinate amount of time in the store making decisions and were treated extremely well the entire time. I especially appreciated that the owner gave us all information and zero sales shtick. I know that if we hit an issue he'll deal with it to our satisfaction. I've hit countless furniture places this month and the only two that spoke to me were Sterling Place and Nova Zembla.
I will return and recommend highly.
