I thought they couldn't fill the other two hotels in the area (le Bleu and Holiday Inn). Is there seriously a need for hotels in THIS area?

Posted by: doghouse at October 23, 2009 1:59 PM in response to Development Watch: 3rd Ave Hotel Trucking Along

It is an ugly area...I live right there (I mean I can see that from my front stoop). I wouldn't want to stay here in a hotel. It's also loud...the manufacturing starts at about 6am...and dirty/dusty.

I have no idea who stays at these hotels. When I tried to put up a family member at the Holiday Inn Express they were asking $426/night!!!!! So I told them just to stay in Manhattan where at least it's nice!

And (bklyn14)...I so hope it's not an hourly place...that won't help the neighborhood!

If you head over there for the choking of the web team...let me know. I'd love to join you. This is the dumbest website I've EVER seen.

Regarding the neighborhoods I got this response from the Times:
"Thank you for contacting NYTimes.com.

You should try clearing your Web browser's cache of temporary Internet files which
usually fixes problems such as you've described. Because most people's
Internet Service Providers (ISP's) and Web Browsers come in many
different versions, we can only provide generalized instructions.

If they do not help you, please refer to either your ISP's technical support center or
your browser's Help documentation.

Since our Web site is constantly updated, you set your Web browser so
that it will not cache articles.

The purpose of a cache is to prevent the browser from reloading each
page, and instead require it to use a version stored locally on your hard
drive; using a cached page will prevent you from seeing the most current
pages we offer.

To make sure you are not viewing a cached page, first try pressing the
"Reload" button to refresh the page.

If the same page reappears, you need to "clear the cache". To do so,
first make sure you are not currently on our home page; go to
another Web page while you change the following settings:

For Internet Explorer (I.E.):

Internet Explorer 7.0: choose Tools | Internet Options | General,
and under Browsing History, click on Delete Files.
Select the "Delete Files...." button to the right of Temporary Internet Files.

Internet Explorer 6.0: choose Tools | Internet Options | General,
and under Temporary Internet Files, click on Delete Files.
Select "Delete all offline content." Click OK to confirm.

For Firefox:

Choose Tools | Clear Private Data
Check the box next to "Cache" and click "Clear Private Data Now"

For AOL 6, 7, 8, 9:

From the AOL menu, choose Settings.
In the Preferences window, under Organization, click Internet Properties.
In the General tab. Go to the Temporary Internet Files area.
Press Delete Files. Select "Delete all offline content." Click OK to confirm.
Choose OK to exit the AOL Internet Properties window, and you're done.

For Safari:

From the Safari menu, select Empty Cache. When prompted, click Empty
and confirm that you wish to empty the cache."

That's a whole lotta instructions to run a simple search!

Tell them you hate it! Please! Let's make them fix it!

Keep it simple stupid! Yay!

It's AWFUL! I can't find anything. And why do I have to keep re-searching to get to the search I actually wanted. It takes FOREVER and gives no info. Plus the ads got BIGGER and the search results got smooshed.

Is everybody letting the Times know that it's bad and is hated? They need lots of confirmation that they broke it so they stop messing with it.

I don't understand why they think that people who run searches want graphics and fancy coding...don't they know about Google and Craig's List? Those are what people want! The search results not they're web people trying out new and ill-conceived tricks they just learned at the most recent web conference!

I'm sooooo there!

But it is super cute...that is undeniable. I just wouldn't want to live there...and I love the Gowanus area.

Also I hope the slump does make realtors start doing just a little work...like proof-reading their listings!

Posted by: doghouse at November 12, 2008 10:45 AM in response to House of the Day: 591 Union Street

Nope.

You cannot build any additional residential area on that lot as long as it is zoned M1-2.

The house was built BEFORE the zoning was made manufacturing and the houses in the area were grandfathered in. Now that it is M1-2...and it IS...you cannot add any additional residential area on that spot. It can only ever be the house that it is. You probably can't even tear it down and rebuild it.

I've looked at houses in the area and had my contractor look into it. I've also seen people not know this and try to buy homes around there and not be able to get a mortgage because YOU CANNOT BUILD there. It's true.

You could build an office building or something...but NOT residential. That's why all the hotels are around there...commercial not residential.

That and it backs up to a very bad/toxic smelling warehouse with overflowing barrels of stuff right under the rear windows...so you can't even open them without stinking up the whole TINY place. I've seen it.

It's cute and loads of FAR...but it's zoned M1-2 so until the government changes the zoning...YOU CAN'T CHANGE A THING.

It's got to retail it current footprint or become a non-residential building. I've looked into it.

When all else fails, blame it on the browser. Typical.

Wahhhhhaaat? The New York Times web site is one of the most brilliant. My only regret is they can't enable comments on all the stories. (Because they don't have enough editors to handle the volume.)
