Ridiculous clang/water hammer

I rent the top floor of a 3 family house in Bay Ridge. I have two huge radiators, and every morning at 530 AM I guess the heat goes back on, and there is a shockingly loud CLANG. It scares the heck out of me. The landlord says this is unfixable. I find this really hard to believe. He claims a few plumbers have come over. Also to note, if I close the valve off, the knock still happens. A similar noise seems to happen later in the evening when I believe he lowers the heat. For some reason, they don't like to give heat during the night. Any assistance or ideas on a course of action. My relationship with him is friendly, and I'd like to keep it that way of course.

The problem with this building is not the outside/facade (yes, it's ugly) people. I've seen a few of the apartments, they are very small. I highly doubt 2B is almost 700 sq ft. The bedroom felt like a coffin. Also, if you face the back of the building, you are overlooking a parking lot of some sort. All those pretty tress out the windows in those pictures don't exist. Look at the floor plan, one full closet and one half. No thanks.

this is not Bay Ridge!

Bay Ridge is a neighborhood in the southwest corner of the New York City borough of Brooklyn, USA. It is bound by 65th Street on the north, Interstate 278 on the east, and the Belt Parkway-Shore Road on the west.

What you can't tell from the bay ridge property is it's a gut renovation. It sat vacant for over two years as the previous owner passed away. I believe a group of real estate people came in and finally bought the place, renovated it and appeared to have flipped it for this price. Whoever bought it for 730 is now renting out part or all of it. It's a 2 family house. The top two floors are rented by one family. The ground level and the basement are rented by someone else, or maybe that's where the owner lives. I live on the street.
I'm still not defending the price tag...

disagree snarkslope. when you get off the F train at Ditmas and the only thing open is the corner bodega at 10 PM and you get a bag of doritos for dinner, you will be wishing you were in that 4th ave box for 549K.

A friend of mine rented an apartment on Ditmas and East 2nd. There is nothing over there, no restaurants, no bars, just a couple of take out places, laundromats, BORING. These are going to sit for a long, long time...rocketman.

the pricing for this building is a mess. Apt 22H is 789 sq ft at a price of $584,990 which is $741 per sq ft. 21A is 512 sq ft at $529,000 which is $1,033 per sq ft.
Um, um....Is the almost $300 a ft extra for a view? This is silliness.

it gets finished because it's actually in real prospect heights, not broker world prospect heights.

i went to see the 1 bedrooms here. I have no idea why someone would buy here over the Vue one block away. The Vue one beds are similar prices, but the common charges are less. In the Vue are elevators, a gym, and then there is the kicker. The 15th st townhouse is going to be a self managed condo. For life of me I don't understand what the 300+ a month common charge is for if it's self managed. Am I paying myself? Sarah the salesperson said they will hire a local super to deal with garbage, etc for the first year, but that it's not included in the current common charge. Um, what is included then?

how is the edge deal constructed in terms of affordable housing? There is that ugly building right next to NSP for the 80/20 deal they made...

I think you should be ok on 45th st, I've walked more then a few times late at night from the south slope down towards bay ridge. At night it seems mainly hispanic, but harmless. Even though it was late night, families with their children are hanging out in the street with lawn chairs. Don't get me wrong, its NY, keep your eyeballs to yourself.

First, thanks so much for everyone's reply. My landlord has told me he has checked the water level, and everything looks good from that perspective. My hands are tied in terms of having someone look closer, since the boiler is in his living space.
Does the idea from poster at 1:24 AM,the Super in NYC work? I see one pipe coming up from the floor below, but I don't quite understand what you mean by putting a level on the radiator and using quarters and nickels. Can you tell me a little more about this idea? I'm sleeping in the living room right now because that radiator doesn't clang!
