Kitchen Demolition

I'm replacing all my very crappy kitchen cabinets and want to hire someone to demo and dispose of them legally. Any suggestions?

Sewer Pipe Repair

The DEP ran a camera through my sewer line and said there were breaks in it under the street that were causing a problem in the street. First of all, isn't the section in the middle of the street their problem? Secondly, has anyone relined their pipe rather than replaced it? I read an old post that said NYC doesn't not approve relining. Is that still true? Thanks for any advice you can give me. I plan to start getting quotes for the work this week.

I'm a brownstone owner/landlord in Boerum Hill and I often advertise my available apts. on CL. The last time one was empty, I saw a note on the local listserv from someone looking for an apt and ended up renting to them before I even had time to post an ad. I get a lot more inquiries from CL than I ever got from the NY Times. I don't like giving my apts to a broker as it means the tenant has to pay a huge fee. I don't find that the brokers do much due diligence. It's very easy for a landlord to vet tenants themselves.

On the governor's island website (address above)it states that the ferry goes regularly from the Fulton Ferry Landing (not Pier 6) on Saturday and Sundays; unfortunately no service Friday from Brooklyn. There's a schedule for the Brooklyn ferry and the Manhattan one on the website.

If you're interested in used/vintage, try the antique stores on Atlantic Avenue. There are several and some specialize in certain periods. Horseman's Antiques right near Hoyt is juge with several floors. The smaller ones are worth checking out also.

But why now? Lately, I seem to see a new gypsy storefront every other block in boerum hill, carroll gardens etc. Are they a sign of the economy?

Does anyone know if Boerum Hill is every going to get reduced alternate side? Currently we have 4 days a week street cleaning.

I just had my sewer line repaired by Main Man and they did an excellent job. I recommend them highly.

"I am not sure why you or anyone else would get 'really annoyed' about Smith/Court blocks designation.
And I never until very recent years ever heard any refer to those blocks as BoerumHill and mostly on Brownstoner - so not sure why you sale 'always'.
I have lived neighborhood since late 1970's.

When I moved to Boerum Hill in the mid-1980's, Smith St was empty storefronts, real estate offices and crack vials. I never heard any of the genteel folk in Cobble Hill claiming it then.

According to the Boerum Hill Association on their website, the borders are: Schermerhorn Street to Warren Street and Court Street to Fourth Avenue.

Those of us who love living in Boerum Hill get really annoyed about the Boerum Hill/Cobble Hill dividing line. It has always been Court Street but when Smith street got restaurantized, Cobble Hillers started saying Cobble Hill started at Smith. No Way! Boerum Hill proudly claims Smith down to the Carroll Gardens border.

I've alwasy been partial to "The Mildred" which is on Union Street between Prospect Park West and Eighth Avenue. I figure the builder named it after a favorite lady in his life. It defintely dates the building as Mildred is not exactly a common name anymore.

Give me a break! Only 17'wide. So what if it's in boring white bread yuppie Cobble Hill. That's not a fabulous block.

Stones are Us. Carlos (718) 699-2613. He built a 15' retaining wall for a friend of mine and did a beautiful bluestone patio for me.

Morgan Stanley froze my HELOC claiming my credit rating had gone down since I first opened it. Since my credit rating is 762, I thought that was pretty bogus. In order to appeal, I would have to submit reams of paper as if they never vetted me before. It's quite annoying as I had planned to use it for some repairs. My understanding is that all the financial institutions are using any excuse to lower their debt ratio and that there's no rhyme or reason to their freezing HELOCs.

It depends on what's on the other side. I have a glass fronted antique bookcase on one side of my fireplace and on the other I have a low cabinet with a large painting above. It works well. Not everything has to be symetrical.

Please take my maine coon that likes to pee on everything?

I know, such a sales pitch?

But, seriously, please take him. It has been eight years and every one of them I get closer to a nice trip to the vet.

Posted by: Heather at July 16, 2009 7:44 PM in response to Mouse in the House

Heather,

I had a cat who peed on everything once, so I feel your pain. I loved him though so I was determined to figure out what the problem was. Tried every different kind of litter, extra boxes, nothing seemed to work. After a couple of years of living with plastic on my bed and sofa, I was at my wits end when it occurred to me that maybe he just didn't like litter at all. I thought about what he peed on, which was generally any piece of clothing, towel, or fabric that somehow got left on the floor, ie, soft things. So on a whim, I bought those wee-wee pads that they sell in the pet store for puppies, and put one in a litter box. To my amazement, within a few minutes he went over to it, sussed it out, peed on it, and folded it up. The problem was finally solved, except I had to leave him two to three litter boxes with these things since once he did his origami they were useless, (and they aren't as cheap as litter.) But after that, he never peed on anything else again. I told my vet this and she said she never heard of it before, neither did the guy in the pet store. But if you're where you say you are, maybe its worth a shot.

By the way, I never ever saw a mouse anywhere that I lived, and I had neighbors who did. There was an article in the NYT a year or two ago that said the mice basically smell cats and won't go near them, which is why all the bodegas have cats.

Good luck,

Jennnifer

Very small mice can take the bait off of a mouse spring trap without setting it off. They have in my basement.

Agreed on the cleaning / filling of holes. For extermination, The Rat Zapper (around $50 at Pintchik's) is far and away the most effective method I have found.

Posted by: hunter at July 17, 2009 11:22 AM in response to Mouse in the House

Make things simple. Go to Amazon.com and buy a Ratzapper.
There is a lot written on this product on Brownstoner. It is a plastic box into which you put bait (little dry food pellet they give you). The bottom of the box is a metal plate, electrified by batteries. The mice die in there immediately so there is no squirming mice on glue paper or mouse traps or poison. You just throw them in the garbage. I catch the occasional mouse that way and it works. This is after looking for obvious entry points.

Moving is usually an ordeal - movers show up late, they're rude and careless, furniture and/or walls get scratched, the price is not what was quoted, the move takes much longer than it should, and so on. Not with Big Apple Moving.

John and his two-man crew showed up on time. They were friendly, fast, efficient, and respectful of my things; furniture that might scratch walls was carefully wrapped; there were no unexpected charges and they volunteered to do a few things that were outside the scope of work; they never griped about a sofa and dresser that were larger than I'd estimated and were very difficult to move; and the move took almost exactly the amount of time they'd estimated.

Friendly and thoroughly professional, John and his crew were great to work with, and as they pulled away, I could not believe the move was so effortless (at least it was for me!). Then the phone rang: it was the owner of Big Apple Moving calling to enquire how the move had gone, find out if everything was okay. Of course, I thought, that kind of customer service starts at the top! I highly recommend Big Apple Moving.

I was having radiator pipe work done and as soon as the hole was left open in the floor we started getting waterbugs in that room. I put down glue boards to catch them and one night at 4am we were woken by the "screams" of a mouse caught on a board. My husband put it in a shoebox and ran it over with the car to kill it. It was just horrible. I couldn't get the floors repaired fast enough and stuffed steel wool into ever crevice in the house I could find. That expanding foam in a can works good too to plug up holes.

Posted by: premadas at July 20, 2009 3:28 PM in response to Mouse in the House

If you do have the glue trap problem, put on gloves and drop the glue trap into a couple of plastic bags and tie the top. The mouse will suffocate. I feel like Hitler typing this.

Speaking of realtors trying to get people to pay a fee for a no fee apartment on craigslist...

I just stumbled on this which I recognized because I the original "no fee" ad made me post about people expecting cash for security deposits.

Now I see Corcoran is listing this place under the "broker fee" section of craigslist.

Original 'no fee' ad (which is fishy in its own right):

Newer Corcoran 'fee' ad:

Interesting stuff...
