The interesting thing is the Save Coney Island group (http://www.saveconeyisland.net/)wants a "No" vote too, unless the Council "fixes" the plan by moving the high rises to the north of Surf and increasing the acreage for the amusement area. Many of the amusement advocates think it's worse if the plan passes and we get stuck with the high rises forever than if it doesn't pass and Coney continues to get Thorazined for 4-5 years

No, not dead yet. Alive & Kicking is a new flickr group of "the best of the best images from recent years of attractions that will *definitely* be here and open for business in 2009"

"Every day we come across news reports and miscaptioned photos that make people think the Cyclone, Wonder Wheel, Sideshow and everything else closed forever on Sept 7, 2008. It's not true! We send out emails explaining that we are devastated by the loss of Astroland but Coney Island will indeed be open for business in 2009. The images in the group should call out to people--Coney Island is alive and kicking, please visit!"

Why are Mayor Bloomberg, City Councilman Domenic Recchia and Lynn Kelly, President of the Coney Island Development Corporation, allowing Joe Sitt to get away with murdering Coney Island? This is your opportunity to say Thor No More!... Mayor Mike, Give Us Back our Playground!...Hey Domenic, Don’t let Pal Joey Kill Coney!....CIDC, Go Back to the Drawing Board!

yes, of course Deno's Wonder Wheel, a city landmark, and Deno's park (games, arcades, kiddie rides, Spookarama) will be open next year. Also the Cyclone will be open, the kiddie park on the Bowery, the Coney sideshow, and many other attractions, sandwiched between Thor Equities empty lots.
Unless a miracle happens pretty soon Coney's largest amusement park will be one of those empty lots. Astroland's Break Dance, Dante's Inferno, Log Flume and other rides were more than the sum of their parts and will be greatly missed. it's shame the city does not step in and save the amusements from being destroyed by the mighty Thor

brooklyn_G_girl, nope, "everyone" was not wearing Thor "Summer of Hope." Not by a longshot. The T's were given out by Thor to 1,000 students from the High School of Sports Management, who also received free ride ticket courtesy of Astroland. It was part of Thor's campaign to buy loyalty by giving out freebies to the community.
As for the comment "no one seemed concerned that it was the last day," wrong again. of course people were smiling and having fun, but didn't you notice that all day long and all night too, groups gathered in front of the Astroland entrance son Surf and the Boardwalk to take souvenir photos in front of the iconic sign? Did you get into conversations with people and ask how they felt? I did as a volunteer with the group Save Coney Island, which handed out 10,000 "What can you do to help save Coney Island" flyers on Astroland's last day. People thanked us, ran after us asking for additonal flyers, and vowed to write or phone city officials
dear New Yorkers, don't be cynical. Just because we didn't do a protest or a petition like last year, doesn't mean people don't care. Fight for your right to Coney!
