IT'S TIME TO PAR-TAY!!!
We Brownstoners just can’t pass up an excuse to get together and sip cold drinks, so it’s time to GET DOWN, GET FUNKY, GET LOOSE!
On October 15th beginning at 6:30pm, all Brownstoner contributors, readers, lurkers and posters are invited to come on out to Union Hall for a good ole time.
This time we will be celebrating Libra and Scorpio birthdays. And, as a special treat, we are hosting the First Annual Brownstoner Regulars’ Choice Awards. Pop into the Open Thread any day to find out the voting categories and how to vote for your favorite posters. We’ve got a special category for Brownstoner posters and lurkers we’d most like to meet. So many of you have made the list of nominations that we can’t even name you all here! Show up and let us see you in the flesh and raise our glasses to you :-)
Everyone is invited and those of you who have never joined us before are especially encouraged to come by for snacks, drinks and plenty of laughs.
Union Hall is located at 702 Union Street (near the corner of 5th Avenue) in Park Slope, Brooklyn. http://tinyurl.com/md9qcd
Take the R/M train to Union Street (when you exit the train, walk up hill to 5th Ave.) or the B63 bus to Union Street and 5th Avenue.
We look forward to welcoming Brownstoners old and new!

Ellis Bar, Tonight at 6pm!
IT'S A PAR-TAY! Come on down to Ellis Bar and party with the posters and lurkers on Brownstoner.com!!!
It's a night to celebrate Leo and Virgo birthdays, drink adult beverages (yeah!), and, if you are brave enough, take part in Ellis' Thursday night karaoke.
We've got drink specials, goodie bags for all attendees and a special goodie bag for those who are Leos or Virgos. Does it get any better than this? HECK YEAH! There will be a special prize for the first Brownstoner who is brave enough to sing for us :-)
Don't be shy - come hang with us. We will be starting the festivities at 6pm. Have to work Thursday night? Tell that boss of yours that you've got somewhere more important to be! The economy stinks — what's a better way to let go of that stress than to quaff a brew with your fellow Brownstoners? THERE ISN'T A BETTER WAY!
http://www.ellisbar.com/
So, get your booty on down to Ellis Bar, located at 627 5th Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets in Greenwood Heights. Take the R train to Prospect Avenue or the B63 bus to 5th Avenue and 18th Street.
Hope to see you there!

Ditch work early and come hang out with us. Need incentive? How’s this…I’ve got goodie bags for all attendees and special ones for those B’Stoners who are Leos or Virgos. (Don’t get too excited…it’s cheap stuff!) Be sure to let me know if you are a Leo or Virgo so I can have a special goodie bag for you!
There will be karaoke at 9pm so prepare your ears for the dulcet (or squeaky!) tones of Brownstoner posters :-).

I'm not going to argue with you, DIBS, your knowledge of different ethnicities is far more extensive than mine. ; )

But the Tee-pees were the authentic style weren't they, the Iroquois long houses were considered the Fedders Houses of their day, no?

"Brownstones killed the Indians and took their land?"
Yes, the Brownstoners found their tee-pees and hogans to be offensive, so they killed them!

"Every counry's past is barbaric & bloody. Every country. Most of us have moved on."
That's a really good point, Dave. BH and I were looking at a timeline history of the World, and we really couldn't come up with a culture/people/country that has been barbaric or bloody at some point. Sorry thing, that.
Humans, go figure.

benson, The 'fart' comment really was really crappy. Frankly, I was shocked by it. It was uncalled for, and out of left field.
They're kids, they're just starting out, and instead of sitting on their butts they are trying to start a business which a knee-jerk right winger like you should APPRECIATE.

Posted by: cobblehiller at November 18, 2009 4:33 PM in response to Open Thread
I cut the ginger thins dough into little round circles. I have a 1.25" dia. round cookie cutter that works nicely.
One thing about the pastry cloth, do not be afraid to really flour it up. This dough can absorb a good bit of flour while doing the rolling out on the pastry cloth. Once it starts sticking, you have to clean the cloth well and dry it well before you can start again. A royal pain in the a$$ which I learned early on. And roll as thin as possible.

Pete, Have you used a pastry cloth before?
Posted by: cobblehiller at November 18, 2009 4:07 PM in response to Open Thread
Pete, Before I forget, I usually use dark molasses instead of the dark corn syrup the recipe calls for. I like that flavor.
Posted by: cobblehiller at November 18, 2009 4:06 PM in response to Open Thread
Cut it with? A knife, nothing fancy. You mean to make the rounds/discs?
It won't be too crumbly, it's a very soft tender dough. Hmm, maybe drops of water. But if it's breaking apart, then something is likely VERY wrong or you missed an ingredient. It doesn't behave that way.
Like I said earlier, the only tricky part is the rolling out on pastry cloth, getting used to a rolling pin cover and rolling them very very very thin. I'm a pretty experienced baker and this was a little challenging the first time I did it about 3 or so years ago.

Disc of dough is about half an inch to an inch thick and round, think of a wheel of cheese, just thinner.
Yep, those tin thingys. I just use a little round one - maybe a 1.25" diameter.
