Increasing Auto Break Ins - Park Slope
Please be advised that there have been a number of cars broken into in the Park Slope area, these petty thieves are looking for GPS, Ipods, Speakerphones, money, etc. Dont leave your GPS clamp on your window. These men are described as either white or hispanic, one has very short hair, almost bald, one carries a Blue Duffel Bag, they have hit several blocks in the slopes. They take their newly stolen items to local car services to sell for petty money, leaving u with damage, money spent & items gone, keep your eyes open & post signs on your block describing auto break ins, maybe they will think twice... P.S. they have even broken into cars in the late afternoon when it is still light out.

Marble Restorers are ok, but your best bet is to have a professional come in and polish it with a machine.

Daily news:
CO-OP MANAGEMENT AXED ALLEGEDLY LET SOME SKIP WAIT LIST
BY HUGH SON DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
THE MANAGING agent of an 811-unit Bay Ridge co-op, where residents charged apartment seekers gave bribes to skip a five-year waiting list, has been fired.
A state Division of Housing and Community Renewal investigation found "serious deficiencies" in management at the Bay Ridge Towers, including "the illegal resale of apartments to applicants" not on a required waiting list, according to a letter obtained by the Daily News.
The contract of JAL Diversified management - which expires this month - won't be renewed, said Division of Housing and Community Renewal spokesman Peter Moses.
"We are turning over the information we uncovered to the proper authorities," Moses said.
Apartments at the Mitchell-Lama building complex are highly coveted because one- to two-bedroom apartments cost $14,000 to $20,000 - far below market value. Many of the units have sweeping views of the harbor and the Narrows.
The state oversees operations at the Mitchell-Lama building, which is reserved for moderate-income earners.
JAL President John Lipuma blamed the illegal sale of apartments on a single employee, a sales manager he fired last month.
Lipuma - asked by the state to investigate 22 apartment owners the state had no record of - found that the manager had doctored forms to get on approved lists people who had never submitted information to the state.
"She got the original form that was signed, and she added names on that," he said, adding he didn't know whether she received money from perspective homeowners.
Several longtime co-op owners welcomed the state's announcement, which they said came after they alerted officials to corruption in the building four years ago.
"I was outraged," said apartment owner Barbara Grebin. "People would say, 'Isn't it strange all these new people are moving in, and they don't know anything about a waiting list?' "
"These people just paid under the table to get their apartment," charged Charles Neil, another owner. "It's morally wrong."
Neil also said the co-op had a litany of other problems, including lucrative contracting jobs given to relatives of building employees.
Co-op President Maureen O'Donnell, who was elected last year, refused to comment.
Lipuma said that he was "shocked" by the state decision to fire his company and blamed the Division of Housing and Community Renewal for not keeping closer tabs on the operation.
"They're the ones who are supposed to be auditing these records," Lipuma said. "All of a sudden, there's a problem, and we're being thrown out."

Perfect Renovation has a high overhead that you will ultimately pay for. Their employee turn-around is horrible, so u never get people who really care other than management. I would never use them for any work, Why Pay Double, and not get the personal attention you'd get with a smaller company. I hate their gimmick & stupid red shirts, ugghhh... Shop Around... And as far as their pictures on their website, totally photoshopped with pro pictures, such a gimmick. I see their unexperienced employees looking lost at the Home Depot all the time, calling management to ask questions about simple things.

you are right, someone i know tied their dog to a meter on 5th ave near 12th street & it was dognapped, luckily they found the dog near 18th street. & 4th ave. wow i didnt even see it in the thieving way...
P.S. The Car thieves that I was talking about sometimes ride in pairs up & down the blocks on Bike... Sometimes separately & then meet up when they get a "Hit"... They broke into a car on 7th Street Bet. 4th & 5th Ave sometime last week at around 7pm.
Lets catch these sons of.... NYPD seems to care less about auto break ins...

you dont need a license to be a General Contractor in NYC let's say to perform commercial, institutional or industrial work, only when performing home improvements does one need a DCA issued "Home Improvement Contractor license" & a "Home Improvement Salespersons license".

Friendly neighbor policy is the best one. If you are bothered by noise and/or dust, dont call 311. My momma always told me not to tattle tale, it only brings problems in the future. Sometimes I think back to the days when Park Slope wasn't such a nice neighborhood & think to myself how much friendlier those days were, now no one knows their neighbor.

some people and or their agents dont advise that you put a home on the market during the summer since many people go on vacations. Then you may end up with a home sitting on the market for a long period of time. People always ask how long has it been sitting on the market, the longer the more weary people are of purchasing. Thats what I've heard from friends in the industry.

Thanks Dave in Bed Stuy, I look at the big picture when it comes to investing some money.
I was sad to see the tin go also, but the ceiling was very damaged & would cost more to repair than what it was worth. In some higher end apts I would consider spending the extra cash. I was investing in straightening out the floors & didnt want to see a slanted ceiling. Oh well, what can you do... At least now I have straight lines.

Well for every $4,000.00 spent you should expect an can get an increase of rent of $100.00 per month, so i'd say im pretty much on track, with annual rent increases I'd say its a good investment. They re-did all of the plumbing, electric, leveled the floors by replacing / joining the joists & supporting the beams with new posts in the basement, everything A-Z is new. In reality, the necessary replacement of some joists & post additions in the basement cost me roughly $8,000.00, so construction of the apt was about $32,000.00. So in the end i am happy for the great job, the increase in rent, the additional structural support to my property, good tenants and no court with contractors :) You've got to spend money to make money. The building is paid for, as soon as I have another empty apt I am going to renovate. We are "original" Brooklynites raised in park slope, we paid very cheap for our properties in the 1970's & 1980's when Park Slope was a gang infested neighborhood ghetto that no one was interested in. So a lil spent here & there doesnt hurt.
