New York City is not prepared for a big earthquake.

We are overdue for the "100 year" chimney-toppling 5-point-something quake.

The frequency of quakes 10 times as powerful (6 on the Richter scale) is about every 670 years. Such a quake would damage most of the un-reinforced masonry buildings that make up much of the city. It's estimated that a 6 magnitude quake would cause (in current valuation) up to 200 Billion dollars in damage.

The unthinkable is a 7 Magnitude quake, once every 3400 years according to experts. Such a quake unleashes 100 times the power of a "chimney toppler" event.

Its like a dog shaking the fleas off its back.

Earthquakes just are not likely here.

Really, you're far more likely to get shot with a pistol or run down by a cab in this city, and even those odds are low.

dearth of Wall Street D-bags.

That is definitely a plus.

Seriously though. Just ONE store that sells some cheese other than Velveeta would be nice.

One decent market. One. That's all I want.

Not one or more average per block. Just one single semi-upscale food market smack dab in the center of this neighborhood of 400,000 residents.

Okay no. 2 things: an apartment with a bathtub AND one decent market.

Sneakers!?

Aw shucks. I was hoping for another storefront church or beauty parlor.

We need more of those.

less white people??!?!?!!

Yes that's EXACTLY what Bed Stuy needs more of:
more intolerance, fear and xenophobia.

THAT will make things better.

Yes it's worth it.

There's only been a dozen murders in this precinct this year, including those 2 kids who were gunned down in September while sitting on their stoop about a block west of this place.

TOTALLY worth it.

They get a big thumbs up.

Very tasty. Their dinner chicken entrees (pistachio-encrusted and spicy sauce) are comfort food without the heaviness.

Excellent.

Did she "tear a new one" in one of her crew while she was there? She loves doing that.

Stuyvesant Heights went from zero to 2 good restaurants in about a year. (Saraghina... Peaches)

In other (desirable) neighborhoods, if they dropped down to this level everyone there would think The Apocalypse was raining down upon them.

Forgive me for pointing out the obvious, but when you're already at bottom there is nowhere to go but up.

No wait... Food 4 Thought has been there for a while. I like that place.

Hey that shooting thursday happened a block east of where I received a beating from some black guys tuesday.

Stuyvesant Heights.... New York City's center of random unprovoked violence this week.

I just got beat on by some "youths" in "Historic Stuyvesant Heights" less than an hour ago at the corner of Macdonough and Stuyvesant.

You know: one block east of Peaches and Saraghina... the fabulous restaurants the Times and others have been gushing about.

Still want to live in Bed Stuy?

How much off the purchase price is your health and well being worth to you?

Feel like taking a beat-down for no reason?

Then Bed Stuy welcomes you, friend.

My girlfriend and I were very excited about it, so last weekend went we walked over to Malcolm X to be greeted by the single tent "Farmer" Market we were mildly amused.

We stocked up on fruits and veggies including a 2 or 3 dollar bunch of mixed greens that still had some dirt on the stalks so it was definitely locally grown.

If the one Farmer leaves, there is no market.

They maybe should just relocate to the Youth Market / Flea Market thing on Lewis/Decatur across from Peaches and Bread Stuy. There's where your upscale "farmers market demographic" foot traffic is.

WAIT A MINUTE!

Where were all the Native Americans?

Ow wait. Peter Stuvesant massacred them three and a half centuries ago. Chased them away good.

Taught them a thing or two about the proper use of "blighty" under-utilized resources.

oh. I'm Hawaiian-Filipino. I was there.

White people don't bother me so much. You know: as long as they "know their place".
