Need recs for Park Slope tour

Just got off the phone with my parents who have decided to come visit for Thanksgiving. Mother said she wants to go walk around "that neighborhood I keep reading about in the times, Park Slope?" (oh gawd). Anyway, I am really only familiar with the retail avenues of the slope, but she wants to see some classic brownstone side streets. Can folks in the know please clue me into exactly which blocks are not to be missed? Thank you! BoD

Just Moved to Bay Ridge

Okay so I just moved down to Bay Ridge 2 weeks ago. Mid 70's + 3rd Ave vicinity. Looking to hear from any of my new neighbors about which is the best deli, dry cleaner, tailor, take out, hardware store, etc etc in the area. Also, which restaurants are a must? There is so much stuff down here, I would love to weed out the crap. Thanks!

Rec: Call Paul to Haul

I hired Call Paul to Haul last week to move some large furniture pieces, and I have nothing but good things to say about him. He showed up on time (actually early), took care loading up my stuff in his van, and was very friendly. He had absolutely no problem schlepping my stuff up a 4th floor walk up apt and had VERY reasonable rates. www.callpaultohaul.com

Wall-Thru Unit & Allergies

Okay, I have those wall-thru heating/cooling fan units in my apartment. One in each room with seperate controls. Total electricity hogs, but that's another matter. Every time I run the unit in my bedroom, overnight, I wake up sniffly, puffy, sore throat etc. typical allergy symptoms. This doesn't matter if it's outputting heat in the winter, or AC in the summertime. Same symptoms.

The nights I don't have to run it, I NEVER wake up with these symptoms. But my bedroom is a corner room facing Southeast so 2 sides are not insulated by other interior spaces. It does get considerably colder / warmer than the rest of the apartment. Unfortunately, this forces me to use the thing more than I really want to.

The filter is removable and cleanable (not disposable), but even regular cleanings has not helped my situation. My only assumption is that the fan is just recirculating airborne dust all night and that's what's messing with me. yuck.

So, aside from leaving this apartment, (which I am actually considering and this is one of the cons on the list), does anyone have any ideas on what I could do here to help fix the situation?

Thanks!
BoD

Works well. My lazy ass father kept a half done plumbing/tiling job protected this way.............for 17 years.

tanoreen is already in the ROTD. Along with only 2 others, one of which isn't even open anymore (ChipShop).

Come on Mr. B, start listing some Ridge restaurants!

First and last time I ate at Yellow Hook, my friend ordered a hamburger with blue cheese on it; and it was delivered with blue cheese salad dressing on it. NO BUENO!

THL, is right. Water of this magnitude would yield lingering mildew smells long after they pump the water out and scrub the tile. Smells eminating from nooks like behind that louver panel...A-m-a-z-i-n-g that an inspector missed this. That's who I'd be suing.

And by East Williamsburg, you mean Bushwick right?

I encountered a similar situation a few years ago with no hot water and a negligent LL.

I called 311 to file a complaint EVERY DAY that there truly was no hot water (or heat) and I deducted ONLY those documented days from my monthly rent. I also sent copies of the complaint receipts along with my reduced rent check - which she always cashed (i.e. accepted)

After a certain number of calls, 311 will send an inspector out to your building.

Take your monthly rent and divide it by days of the month, that is what you deduct per day. But my opinion is that the previous 4 days are un-deductable bc you did not file the complaints.

Vinca and everyone, thank you for the great suggestions. Their visit is short - we only have Friday to sightsee but they are city people themselves and can pound pavement. I am going to do the PS walk and a drive thru Vict. Flatbush in the same day. They have been to Brooklyn before, when I lived in bklyn hts, so thankfully that's off the list.

But nowawdays it's Bay Ridge, so they are in for a culture shock ("We just netflixed Saturday Night Fever so we will be ready!"). Geez. Dad wants to go see the OTT xmas lights in dyker hts, does anyone know if they start immediately after T'giving?

Thank you again, BoD

denton - lorenzutti is a wacky italian mechanic located over in the gowanus area - he really only works on euro cars, but he will take in jap too. The guy is very honest, reasonably priced, and extremely knowledgable.

I have the same problem in my apartment (I rent) but I know for a fact that other tenants suffer the same instant hot/cold/hot fluctuations. And it's really bad -ice cold to scalding hot, and vice versa, in literally 1 second. NO warning. Showering during peak times is really precarious. LL refuses to address the issue "just wake up earlier to avoid the rush" We also have clogged vent stacks which makes the kitchen sink drain gurgle almost constantly with methane probably, LL says " yeah yeah, just put a drain stopper in it"

Agree with the others that buying from an individual is better, but if you go the dealership route, pay the top price for the most in-depth carfax report (will show all service records / repairs). Ask them for the VIN and check it yourself against the door jamb AND dashboard. Order the report yourself (do not trust their pre-printed report).

this reminds me of something that happened recently in my new nabe, Bay Ridge: I went to a hardware store on 3rd avenue to buy a bag of steel wool to plug up radiator holes. I walk in and the 20 something guy asks may I help you? I said, " I need a bag of steel wool please". He responded, "well what grade steel wool? What is HE planning on using it for? Because that makes a difference...." My jaw dropped! No way in hellz would anyone say that in my old 'hood (cobble hill) not even the old timers. And hellao, i'm in my 30's not some frail little old lady. Damn!

My question is if you confronted the new LL about the bedbug claims already made about that apartment? If the apt has been vacant for that amount of time, perhaps he already knew and addressed the problem? You never know until you discuss with him/her.

Roaches and stair safety aside, I agree with GP on this: presumably you saw the grimy condition of the hallway before you signed the lease, and your rent amount probably factors this in. After all, there are p-lenty of apartments out there, and this is the one you chose.

I have never seen a sink at Eddie's. He mostly has doors and sometimes furniture. Call and search web sites of salvage stores, such as Old Goode Things in NYC and Old House Parts in Maine. The lady who bought my coop in Jackson Heights tossed a sink just like this, but alas that was a year ago.
