I have a related question. The owner before me planted a tree in a small garden plot in our "areaway". I don't think he realized how big the tree would get. It is 2-3 stories high. The tree is breaking up the concrete in the areaway and the sidewalk. We want to keep the tree and to keep the sidewalk safe (and avoid fines). So we are also trying to figure out if we can claim some of the sidewalk to give the tree a bigger pit. Right now, it is all behind a fence. We did get a notice from the city that we should try to keep the tree (part of PlaNYC, I think) and fix the sidewalk. Any leads on a contractor who would do this? The one time I had a tree guy look at it, his only advice was to get rid of the tree. OP: don't plant a tree!

My husband's a huge ramen fan (lived in Japan for a couple of years) and walked by on opening night. It was packed so, there's some real noodle lovers out there, $0.25 packages notwithstanding. Will check out this weekend!

I stopped in with my family on the first Saturday they opened and the owners were so nice. They said they had nearly sold out of kids' selections the night before, so that was a good sign that they had tapped into a potential customer base. (More on the way, they said...) I think this is a great addition to the neighborhood. I've never been to Rocketship (not really a comic reader myself), but I know my husband and kids will stop in here.

I also think the Pintchik guys are creating their "dream street" here and I hope they'll help support these nice little shops they've brought in by not being too aggressive on raising the rent.

I live near this block. My neighbor and my son saw separate things that probably related to this on Friday afternoon, but not enough to tell a real story about what happened. My son was leaving the subway and saw two teenagers being arrested around the same time my neighbor reported seeing a guy that looked like he had been hit by a gang of teenagers. Lots of cops at both 5th ave/St. Marks and the subway in response.

Another way to get info about neighborhood crimes is the monthly Police Prec. mtg. This is in the 78th, you can call them for a schedule.

Does no one see this as an "art" project? That may be Eye on 7th St.'s intention.

This neighborhood, my neighborhood, should be called NoGo as in North Gowanus. (The latter name is what some of the old, old timers used to called it.) It's the thin strip of strange land btw 3rd and 4th Ave (south of Atlantic, north of Union or maybe further down?), and all that patchwork that is not Smith St/Carroll Gardens, not Park Slope, not Boerum Hill.

We did this in our front yard without a permit and had no problems. Of course that doesn't mean what we did was technically correct. As a practical matter, the jackhammering took less than an hour and our neighbors seem to view the planted area as a vast improvement over the former concrete paving, so I don't know how it would have become a problem unless a DOB inspector happened to drive by while the work was being done. But your neighbors might be different.

Bkyn05: The link below will answer some of your questions and also has contact information. We have a flowering tree in our areaway which we'd never give up; it was selected knowing that it's mature size would be appropriate to its location: http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_permits_and_applications/images_and_pdfs/TREE_WORK_PERMIT_application.pdf

Thanks everyone. All helpful info. This area is inside our property line according to the most recent survey. It's not fenced in yet, but we're putting up a fence at our property line as well. Anyway, thanks for weighing in.
