where to find old photos of your house?

Hi,
Is there a resource in the city for finding old exterior photos of your home? We are buying a house that has been altered and would like to know how it looked before the changes a previous owner made. Any ideas?

Author's Comments

We did the same thing, did well on our Ft. Greene co-op sale and invested in a home in Victorian Flatbush and we LOVE it. We look forward to sending our future children to PS 139 or PS 217. Good luck and hope to see you around the nabe!

I think that's the same family who owns Mirai, the nail place next door...

I live up the street, and I think this is a pretty good deal, agree that the pricing is taking into account the work required.

This is priced too high. I live in the neighborhood and I don't think it's worth it - would need to be in perfect shape to get that price.

Anyone who thinks this house is too far from the subway is crazy. It's about a three minute walk to Newkirk station. CIA is close by but not at the doorstep. That said, if the house is in bad shape(I have not seen the inside) then $999K seems a bit high. I bought a place nearby for considerably less that needs a ton of work.

We had a wonderful experience with Elizabeth Pizzulli from Corcoran when we sold our place in Ft. Greene. Since she lives in Williamsburg herself, I'm sure she really knows how to sell the area etc. She was extremely professional and a great negotiator, and kept her cool even when things got hairy. Finally she's just a really cool person which makes everything easier. Highly recommended - tell her Marlena sent you :)

OK so strangely enough, this question was answered for me shortly after my post when the open house sign went up outside 663 Rugby. Back on the market, I guess sale fell through. Neighborhood rumor has it that the previous buyer was filmmaker Morgan Spurlock.

Does anyone know what is going on with this house? It supposedly sold in April or so but nobody has moved in, and it's not back on the market either....?

First time I tried to go here we were told the wait was long. Turned to my husband and said, "I'm starving, I don't think I can wait". The person who worked there and had just advised on the wait said, "oh are you pregnant?". Um, nice manners sir.

Second time was for lunch. We were there ten minutes before a waitress came over and said "what can I get you" - menus would be a good first step. The wait for the food to come was probably the longest I have ever experienced, anywhere - we were not offered anything for our trouble.

We never bothered to try it again. Note that this was a few years ago.

bklyn_girl wrote a review about Red Bamboo on September 20, 2008 8:27 PM

I like Red Bamboo's Soul Chicken - very good, even if it is deep fried. Agree with those who say service is not so good. You wait forever and have to tackle your server for everything because they rarely stop by or make eye contact after the initial order.

bklyn_girl wrote a review about Junior's on September 20, 2008 8:07 PM

Agree the place is way overpriced. And I have occassionally had some icky food at Junior's - once the vegetable that came with my meal was broccoli topped with cheez whiz, no joke. However, I think the bakery has some bright spots - for example they make a cake that is carrot cake layered with cheesecake, very tall (something like 6 layers) and it's DE-LICIOUS.

Wow, inigo you aren't very polite. I hope the rest of your day is better, after your anger management class.

For comparison, I was at Lowe's last weekend pricing countertops and got this info:

Sensa Granite (new kind of maintenance free granite):average $75 per sq. foot - but varies up or down based on color selection

Zodiaq Quartz: $63 to $86 depending on color chosen\

These are not installed prices.

So I'd say your price is a good one. Where are you buying it from?

If the cops are going to ticket people sitting on their own stoop because it's a "public" place, then when that stoop needs to be repaired, is the city going to pay for it?

Also, when I went to the Met Opera in Prospect Park over the summer, I called the Parks Dept and asked if it was okay to bring wine. The person on the phone said there is no drinking allowed in any city parks, ever. Then when Marty Markowitz got up to speak before the show started, he made a joke about enjoying sipping something "red or white" during the show. Alcoholic beverages were all over the place that night. Why is that OK and stoop sipping isn't? Makes no sense, very stupid.

Speaking from personal experience, one does not need to wear shoes to make tons of noise walking on the floor. For years I endured a heavy footed upstairs neighbor who didn't like rugs. Agree with those who say paint or laquer the floor white. To each his/her own, but reselling a place with tile floors throughout would be tough indeed, IMHO.

Ditmas Park, Midwood, Fort Greene, agree every neighborhood has a need. But I can't pay a grand a day like the previous poster.

I'm sorry I can't answer your questions, but I hope you don't mind me asking - isn't Newswalk going to be right smack next door to Atlantic Yards once it's developed? I would imagine that's a major minus for living there? Or not for you? Just curious.

Posted by: bklyn_girl at April 5, 2008 6:27 PM in response to Info on Newswalk repairs/condition?

Our floor refinisher told us to keep the floor clean with a soft dust mop and NOT use any products on it, not even water.

I was thinking of looking into this guy, voted best of 2006 in NY Magazine. I think the same as MrHancock's post....

I live in Fort Greene and have used NY Brite and been very happy with the service. Prices are reasonable - I believe it's like $90 for three hours.

I'm thrilled with this news. I'm not anti AY overall, but I am anti-skyscrapers and anti-traffic congestion. An arena would be so much fun to take my future children to, but a bunch of skyscrapers and traffic? No thank you.

I liked the post and was hoping to learn something from the responses. Instead all I get to read is a bunch of people picking on the poster. I'm just sorry the hecklers are too afraid to post as anything but "guest". I wish this site would require registration for all posters, it would help keep the bulls--t factor to a minimum.

I just moved out of a 6 unit co-op after 5 years. Monthly bookkeeping/statements done by someone in the building is fine, but IMHO paying an outside account for a proper annual statement is worth the $1500 or so. When you go to sell you will look much more organized and professional. Worth every penny.

Now that I'm pushing 40, I wouldn't mind anyone from any race to tell me my ass is hot once in a while :)

To the person who is baffled by the excitement around a new restaurant - I agree there are many options already but IMHO there are not many "nice" places very closeby. I don't think I'm a snob as I enjoy eating at all kinds of establishments but like the option of somewhere nicer than the takeout joints and low-atmosphere options once in a while. Since I'm new to the 'hood, I'd love some reco's if I'm making too many assumptions on what's available locally.

I went to the open house. The place is quite spacious inside and everything is new, but there's no charm and no high end details that I'd expect from a house in this price range. Yes the bathrooms are small and unattractive. Not much of a master suite. Backyard is almost nonexistent due to garage. I just bought a house on the same block as this one so I hope they do get a good price, but in my opinion it's not really worth what they are asking.
And as a new Rugby Road resident, a new French restaurant DOES matter :)

I'm about to move out of a 5 unit co-op, and we have hired a part time maint. guy to take care of cleaning and garbage etc. but I don't know that I'd do it again. With so few owners, serving on the board and/or being very involved is almost mandatory. If you want to live in a very small building, you won't have the luxury of just paying maintenance and not worrying about the building at all. Personally, I'm excited to be leaving and not having to talk to my neighbors all the time about when we should paint the hallways and such. As long as you know what you're getting into, it can be a positive experience.

Hi,

Yes condos may be easier but one thing I learned about new construction condos a few years back - we had 10% to put down, and couldn't get a mortage because the building was not 50% sold yet and banks would not take the risk. Keep in mind this was back in '03 when the banks were lending money to anyone. Of course by the time the building was 50% sold so was our dream unit and we didn't like the remaining inventory. Just something to keep in mind if you are looking at new construction condos.

You might want to head over to habitatmag.com and check out their message boards, "Board Talk". Lots of good advice on co-op management and legal issues.

My husband and I were really tempted to sell our place ourselves - we live on a highly desirable block in a great building and we knew it would go fast. But we learned it was totally worth it to hire a broker, she was able to create a feeding frenzy for our place that we never would have been able to - we definitely would have ended up taking a lower offer had she not been there to help. Also people can be weirdos, and our bidders and their brokers were no exception. I won't go into details, but let's say we were really happy not to have to deal with them ourselves. Just some food for thought!

Agree you should take them down before showing, the buyers won't be disappointed if they don't know they exist...

Posted by: bklyn_girl at February 15, 2008 9:18 PM in response to Seller's Question

If you do NOT want a house that needs work, don't buy. If you are willing to put in the time and money to give the place some TLC, use it to negotiate a lower price (unless the place is already priced appropriately for a house that needs work) and plan on making it your own! Good luck.

Agree with others who say your lawyer should be pressing harder, and that you should ask him/her to give them a deadline. You don't have to be nasty, just give them a date. Good luck!

Hi, I've registered here JUST so that I can post this warning re: the home cleaner Yancey Acosta. I hired him last year and was appalled...

He DID NOT CLEAN. He simply rearranged stuff (sponges, bottles) in my kitchen and bathroom to make it appear he had cleaned. He did not vacuum. He did not scrub. He did not sweep. He did not dust. He was mysteriously finished after 1.5 hours after he had told me he'd probably work for about 4. And then he tried to charge me way more than he initially quoted because he said my apartment was so much dirtier than what he was used to (a complete lie - I'm the neat type!)

My big mistake was telling him it was my first time ever using a cleaner.

This guy is nice and jovial, but COMPLETE cheat who does horrible work. I'm still seeing his signs all over Fort Greene.

STAY AWAY FROM YANCEY ACOSTA!!!!
