Hi,
I'm Aga Trojniak, Director of Housing and Immigration programs at Flatbush Development Corporation (FDC), a nonprofit community organization. FDC runs a foreclosure prevention program, and the issue is very close to our hearts. In 2008, Greater Flatbush was first amongst NYC neighborhoods most affected by predatory and sub-prime loans and mortgages, with over 2,200 foreclosure actions from 2004 to 2007. (See New York Times, February 11, 2008) Although Victorian Flatbush/Ditmas Park is only a part of that neighborhood, unfortunately we have not escaped unscathed. Many of our closest community members are struggling to keep their homes in these tough economic times.
If you know anyone in Brooklyn who is having a hard time paying their mortgage, real estate taxes, or their home-related bills please ask them to give us a call at 718 859 3800. There are many (FREE!) resources available to at risk homeowners to help them stay in their home! There are also a lot of scams that we hope homeowners will avoid.
NEDAP, a nonprofit economic justice organization, has some great maps showing exactly where NYC foreclosures have hit hardest. They're worth checking out (www.nedap.org)
