gosh gary- and here we thought you'd be too bored to post again.
I hardly live in la-la land and frankly, if I give an opinion and you don't agree with it, I simply expect common courtesy. disagree without getting all crappy about it. so far sam, you and mmhtph can't seem to accomplish that. Sure they're money pits- but the idea was to make them bring in money and I'm neither going to repeat myself nor apologize for being able to think outside the box just because you can't. You have absolutely no idea of what I am talking about.
I'm not being defensive- I don't think people who are incapable of coming up with any ideas at all are hardly in a position to criticize anyone who can. And the simple refusal to acknowledge what I actually did say regarding Pratt simply tells me yet again you either can't or you are willfully misunderstanding what I am saying.
so you 3 can bitch about being bored or bitch about people throwing out ideas you can't even think of, or think you are so superior while I'm in la la land, as you so meagerly put it, but the bottom line is if you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

I'm with you, vinca! OP sounds like he expects the neighborhood to change just because he moved there. And sad to say, too many other people feel the same way- forget the people who have lived in the neighborhood for years. You are right on target about how we would ALL like safety and comfort. Not condoning the bb gun (and I hope it was reported) but then again, why should poor folks in the projects care about luxury buildings when all the condo owners want to do is get them out of their homes.
Great post Chaka and bunkerlabs but I heard the entire complex will be airlifted to Pyramus, next to a chemical plant so you can bet the real estate prices won't go up and gentrifiers 10 years from now won't want to live there.

I love the posters who bitch about the site now being boring- not that they are adding anything useful or interesting, but they do love to bitch.

Hey- tell us more! Were they just visiting? Did your tenants do the right thing?

that's great about the museum! I have a friend whose father worked in the navy Yard for years doing ship repair. would so love to know more. And it's so important to keep as much industry in NYC as possible.

I was going to say the same thing, SnarkSlope. The pictures are awful, everything is shown to its worst effect. The place looks claustrophobic and narrow but it's over 1600 square feet. I have never understood brokers who post awful pics for multimillion dollar houses.

Why assume he censored it? I tied posting and there was an error message page so for all you know, it was a techie error. Not unknown on the blog.

According to the NYSDOMV- you must provide medical documentation and then there are further specifications before being issued a handicapped permit:
"A person with a temporary disability is any person who is temporarily unable to ambulate without the aid of an assisting device, such as a brace, cane, crutch, prosthetic device, another person, wheelchair, walker or other assistive device. (Temporary permits are issued for periods of six months or less.)"
Permanent qualifying disabilities include:
Uses portable oxygen Legally blind Limited or no use of one or both legs Unable to walk 200 ft. without stopping
Neuromuscular dysfunction that severely limits mobility Class III or IV cardiac condition. (American Heart Assoc. standards)
Severely limited in ability to walk due to an arthritic, neurological or orthopedic condition
Restricted by lung disease to such an extent that forced (respiratory) expiratory volume for one second, when measured by
spirometry, is less than one liter, or the arterial oxygen tension is less than sixty mm/hg of room air at rest
Has a physical or mental impairment or condition not listed above which constitutes an equal degree of disability, and which
imposes unusual hardship in the use of public transportation and prevents the person from getting around without great
difficulty.

2:09- you're lucky it worked because legally you are still not entitled to withhold rent without going to court first. Had he taken you to court it could have resulted in the court deciding against you and even allowing him to evict you. It happened to a friend of mine who took it upon herself to act without getting court permission and it backfired, badly.
But in your case it sounds like your landlord probably has a lot of trouble on his hands with other tenants (if your apartment was allowed to get so bad, there must have been others, right?) and probably figured the smart thing to do was fix the problem before it went to court. Good for you though- I'm glad it worked out.

Actually the verdigris in the crevices makes sense as it's the oxidation of the copper. the high points of the design are constantly worn clean from handling but the crevices not so much.

Not necessarily, bxQrl. All they have to do is check the profile page and see the difference and read which posts were under which username.

Actually, the project buildings will be lifted by derigibles which will gently float them to Manhattan (incredibly green, that), specifically the East Village, and other formerly hip places, now totally over. They will be set down in Thompkins Park, Washington Sq Park, and other empty spaces, once the playgrounds of the hip and happening. Since everyone who is anyone has moved to B'burg, no one will even notice or object.
The projects folks can go about their business, as per usual. This will give them time to ruminate on the irony of being like the Native Americans: you're out there trying to survive, and white folks come in, build right in front of you, and then expect you to leave.

BullSh!t! Nobody is telling anyone from the projects to move anywhere! It’s just people do not enjoy being harassed by people from the projects or apt bldgs as they walk by. It’s just causing more resentment towards the residents from the projects & apts. Bldgs.

If they did get brought to a shelter and not put in homes, it's not the OP's fault. The tenants should not have so blithely put their pets in a situation where they would have to get rid of them. But of course the whole self-responsibility concept is lost on many people these days.

I'd much rather be harassed by people from the condo's or houses as they walk by. Would explain why, but I've got to go. There is a condo walking by right now!

does "low rent project" mean public housing? if so, they will not necessarily remain forever, policy reform can get them demolished (as in chicago and st. louis). but nyc public housing is an anomaly, within the high-rise variety (i.e. it is better managed, maintained and safer than the ones that have been demolished).
however, as with everything, when there is money involved, new policies can get pushed through.
it sounds like the problem is kids being kids. doing stupid things because they don't yet realize the effect.
unfortunately, the design of high-rise projects makes it hard to determine where a kid with a bb gun is shooting from.
kids need leisure activities that are less destructive and harmful; and they need to understand the consequences of their actions.

thanks
yea i put 10+ years that could mean 20+ too ;0
just was unsettled/shocked by the shot to the head, was a few steps from bedford avenue on the southside. Cops helped by offering to call an ambulance.
years ago i could barely get anyone to come here and when they did they would say "this is a ghost town" and yet i rarely had any kind of problem. Now that it is condoberg i was surprised that now something like this happened.
anyway good points dtrain
also i'm not a fan of the luxury condo's either

It stinks these kids shot at people and the cops should have been called absolutely. But this is because of boredom and excess aggression and it's the stuff some boys do anywhere not just the projects. My privileged, suburban brothers did insane things when they got bored. Aggressive, energetic boys should be on a football team and work it out on the field.
Posted by: traditionalmod at July 18, 2008 9:05 AM in response to williamsburg low rent projects
I have given a lot of thought to the kids being kids argument. When I was younger, I benefited from it (albeit to a lesser degree than shooting someone). I did have a friend that stun gunned someone and got expelled, but anyway....
The difference is that for kids in the lower socioeconomic classes, they have a lot fewer opportunities to improve their lot in life. Does anyone remember the Pot Princess who went to NYU and was selling drugs in Washington Square Park? Her family weaseled her out and it didnt destroy her life. If it had been a kid from the projects, he'd have been done.
It's happening in schools too. Safety officers arrest everyone for even minor infractions, causing mandatory suspension.
These are disadvantages, and they are distinctly unfair.
However, when individuals excuse these kids from taking those risks, they are doing those kids a disservice.
