I wonder how the owners of those houses feel. I couldn't imagine having to get approval from the LPC for any change to the exterior.

I think it is being marketed on The Developers' Group web site.

Although they are fully enclosed, they do have fire-safety doors. Look carefully there's a hatch on each one. My building looks into some of these and there is egress.

These posts always seem elitist and somewhat ethnocentric when commenting on contractor-built or Hassidic housing. I agree that these buildings are better than the empty lots or run-down, vacant manufacturing that they replaced.
In terms of fire hazard, the escape route may be through interior fire exits so window escape is not neccessary. Since all Hassidic housing has these gates, I suppose it it a cultural thing. Fear of outsiders, safety? I know the staggered balconies have to do with the Sukkah holiday in the fall.

OK, so these aren't examples of great architecture, but you seem to always pick out working-class, contractor-designed housing, OR Hassidic housing (you can tell by the staggered balconies). It all comes off smelling a little elitist and maybe even a bit ethnocentric. Lets face it, they didn't burn down some historic brownstone to build most of these.

I live nearby, and have to say it is an eyesore and a blight on the waterfront. I am all for preserving historic parts of the city, but come on, not every building is worth saving. I could see, maybe, keeping the oldest building, the sign and smokestack, but the rest is pure industrial heap. And instead of just saying, "Oh, it must be preserved as is..." why not come up with a viable alternative instead of criticizing every proposal.
